  • The Yangsan fault in the southeastern Korea has been receiving increasing attention in its seismic activity. In this fault region, by using the extended coda-normalization method for 707 seismograms of local earthquakes, were obtained 0.009f$^{-1.05}$ and 0.004f$^{-0.70}$ for fitting values of Q$_p^{-1}$ and Q$_s^{-1}$, respectively. These results indicate that Q$_p^{-1}$ and Q$_s^{-1}$ in the southeastern Korea is the lowest level in the world although the exponent values agree well with those in the other areas. The low Q-1 is not related to the movement of the Yangsan fault but to the tectonically inactive status like a shield area.

  • In this study, seismic isolation technology to the lighthouse structure is suggested and isolation effects on response reduction are studied for three types of isolation models with the proposed seismic isolation technology. A seismic isolation system is installed on the base of the lighthouse structure in model 1, on the base of the lighthouse lens in model 2, and on the base of both of them in model 3. The dynamic time history analysis verifies that in case of model 1, the earthquake loading is greatly reduced and the accelerations of superstructure are greatly reduced. Also, the inter-story drifts are very small and can be neglected. The isolated model is in translational state and can be seen as a rigid whole. as a results, model 1 is very effective to mitigate the influence of earthquake on structures. In model 2, isolation effects are valid but special care should be taken to failure of the non-isolated lighthouse sub-structure. In model 3, isolation effects are also valid but the effects are small. model 3 is less effective than model 1.

  • Responding to the increasing demand for research on seismic resistance of structures triggered by a large-scale earthquake in Korea, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety revised the typical application of the existing seismic design standards with the national seismic performance target enhanced. Therefore, in this paper, the dam body of the aged Test-Bed and the penstock with fluid were modeled by the three-dimensional finite element method by introducing several variables. The current seismic design standard law confirmed the safety of the dam structure and penstock against seismic waves. As a result of the 3D finite element analysis, the stress change due to the water impact of the penstock was minimal, and it was confirmed that the effect of the hydraulic pressure was more significant than the water impact in the earthquake situation. When the hydrostatic pressure is in the form of SPH, it was analyzed that the motion of the fluid and the location of stress caused by the earthquake can be effectively represented, and it will be easier to analyze the weak part. As a result of the analysis, which considers penstock's corrosion, the degree of stress dispersion gets smaller because the penstock is embedded in the body. The stress result is minimal, less than 1% of the yield stress of the steel. In addition, although there is a possibility of micro-tensile cracks occurring in the inlet of the dam, it has not been shown to have a significant effect on the stress increa.

  • The floors of building structures equipped with vibrating machines can be susceptible to large vibration as a result of resonance or beating. Such a vibration can be reduced efficiently by using tuned mass dampers. However, the effectiveness of the damper depends greatly on the location and the natural frequency of the damper. To determine the optimum damper location is especially important since the dynamic behavior of a building structure varies with the location of the input loading. To this end, it is intended to decide the location and natural frequency of tuned mass dampers for reducing vibration of both loaded floors and floors located nearby the loaded floors considering the location and frequency components of the loading. The Vector composition method and the super elements are used th obtain the responses in steady states, and the optimum damper location and natural frequencies were found with the given damper mass.

  • The complexity of determining strain associated with shear modulus and damping ratio in torsional tests has been resolved by means of several approaches. Particularly, the modified equivalent radius approach is adequate to when generating the plots of equivalent radius ratio versus strain more effectively over any range of strains in resonant column and torsional shear (RC/TS) tests. The modified equivalent radius approach was applied for hyperbolic, modified hyperbolic, and Ramberg-Osgood models in evaluating damping ratio. Results showed that using a single value of equivalent radius ratio based on conventional equivalent radius approach is not appropriate. A new model was developed to consider the soil damping behavior at small strains as well as hysteretic damping and it was attempted to determine adjustments are required in evaluating strain associated damping when combining the two damping components.

  • To establish the basis of GPS network for the perception of diastrophism, we slected 7 stations(baseline $100{\sim}300km$) all around south Korea considering the earthquake and the satellites all-in-view. As a result of periodical measurement, the change of relative positions between selected stations in Korea was very small. We could know that the baseline between Korea and Japan are decreasing by a few centimeters, as one of the results of analysing baseline vector changes by continuous measuring IGS stations and Korea(KAMC) station.

  • Lots of bridge structure generated the change of outward formation according to durability capability and decrepitude by long use. Especially, in case of the typhoon, snowing and earthquake is going to make rapidly more worse formation about the old structural facilitys. Also, outward formation by irregular and micro-distortion in bridge structure could not easily checked by normal diagnostics method. As a result, performance-capability of structure facility is getting to make a decline in standard of structure performance. Recently, real-time monitoring technology by wireless environment go into the study of irregular movement for structure facility. This paper presents the development of sensor to displacement checking about bridge structure. Sensing method of developed sensor put bring into the gyroscope technology using the acceleration speed and angular acceleration speed. This paper also will simulated to verified the monitoring capability of developed sensor against random vibration, frequency and distortion in simulated equipment.

  • The importance of renewable energy has increased continuously due to the energy insecurity and the necessity of reducing carbon dioxide which is causing global climate change. In such a situation, the Pohang Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS) power plant project which is launched in December 2010 shall be a new opportunity for the development of EGS related technologies in Korea. In this paper, the case studies of Fenton Hill project in the USA and Hijiori project in Japan are introduced in order to help a part of the domestic EGS demonstration project. As a result, it could be helpful to minimize the trial and error of the domestic EGS project by acquiring the achievements and limitations of existing EGS projects.

  • In many cases, geothemal wells will not be opened up a geothermal reservoir under such conditions that an extraction of geothermal energy is economically viable without any further measures. Geothermal wells often have to be stimulated, in order to increase productivity. For the non-volcanic area, such as Korea, the hydraulic stimulation is necessary to complete geothermal power plant. The analysis of induced seismic event showed that the thermal resource might have a much wider extent and a much higher generation potential than previously assumed. In order to record compressional and shear waves emitted during fracture stimulation, three-component geophones are placed in a seismometer. The recorded data from one seismometer is the convolution of the source magnitude, the transmission media, and the sensitivity of the instrument.

  • In this study, the importance of implied strength correction for shallow depths at a region of moderate to low seismicity with primary focus on its effect upon site natural period and mean period of the ground motion is investigated. In addition to the most commonly used Modified Kondner-Zelasko (MKZ) model, this paper uses a quadratic/hyperbolic (GQ/H) model that can capture the stress - strain response at large strains as well as small strain stiffness dependence. A total of six site profiles by downhole tests are used and 1D site response analyses are performed using three input motions with contrasting mean periods. The difference between non-corrected and corrected analyses is conditional on the site period as well as mean ground motion period. The effect of periods is analyzed by correlating them with the effective peak ground acceleration, maximum shear strains and amplification factors. The comparative study reveals that the difference is more prominent in soft sites with long site periods. Insignificant differences are observed when soil profiles are subjected to ground motion with very short mean period.
