  • It is difficult to machine microparts, such as microshaft and microholes, by conventional machining. Such micropart can be easily machined by EDM because it's machining force is very low. In micro-EDM, the precise electrode movement and discharge energy control are important. Therefore, high precision motion stage and EDM device with high performance is necessary. In this research, a new EDM machine was developed and microshaft and microhole, with various shape and size, was machined.

Study on Supersonic Jet Noise Reduction Using a Mesh Screen (메쉬 스크린을 이용한 초음속 제트소음 저감법에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • This paper describes experimental work to control supersonic jet noise using a mesh screen that is placed at the nozzle exit plane. The mesh screen is a wire-gauze screen that is made of long stainless wires with a very small diameter. The nozzle pressure ratio is varied to obtain the supersonic jets which are operated in a wide range of over-expanded to moderately under-expanded jets. In order to perturb mainly the initial jet shear layer, the hole is perforated in the central part of the mesh screen. The hole size is varied to investigate the noise control effectiveness of the mesh screen. A schlieren optical system is used to visualize the flow fields of supersonic jet with and without the mesh screen device. Acoustic measurement is performed to obtain the OASPL and noise spectra. The results obtained show that the present mesh screen device leads to a substantial suppression of jet screech tones. The hole size is an important factor in reducing the supersonic jet noise. For over-expanded jets, the noise control effectiveness of the mesh screen appears more significant, compared to correctly and under-expanded jets

  • 근접장광학현미경(Near-field Scanning Optical Microscope: NSOM)은 회절한계의 분해능으로 표면미소구조의 광학적 특성을 분석할 수 있기 때문에 여러 가지 용도로 응용되고 있다 그러나 NSOM 광 탐침의 경우, 탐침 끝 100nm크기의 구멍으로 출력되는 광 투과율(Throughput)은 거의 10^-5이하의 Throughput을 나타내기 때문에 NSOM의 응용 범위 확대의 제약조건이 된다. 특히 고밀도 즉 , 나노 크기 정도의 광 정보를 저장할 수 있는 한 방법으로 대두되는 광 탐침을 이용한 근접장 기록의 경우 광투과율 증대는 필수적으로 해결되어야할 부분이다.   • 큰구슬우렁이 (Glossaulax didyma)는 복족강 (Gastropoda), 중복족목(Gastropoda), 구슬우렁이과 (Naicidae)에 속하고 내만의 조간대에서 수심 10m 가까이의 진흙과 모래가 섞인 조하대애 묻혀 살며 일본과 우리나라 전역에 분포한다 (유, 1976). 큰구슬우렁이는 이매패나 복족류의 껍질에 구멍을 뚫어 섭식하는 육식성패류로 패류양식장 등의 해적생물로 알려져 있다 (유, 1976). 그러나 이들은 식용으로 이용되고 있어 지방에 따라 배꼽고둥, 배꼽, 우렁이, 잠빼기, 말띠, 미소라, 개소랑, 명지고둥, 가내기, 해구 등으로 폭넓게 불려진다. 이와 같이 식용으로 널리 이용되고 있는 큰구슬우렁이는 산업종으로 중요한 위치에 있어 자원관리적 측면에서 이들의 생식생물학적 조사가 조속히 이뤄져야 할 종이다.   • 마이크로폴라 탄성이론은 다른 마이크로연속체(microcontinuum) 이론에 비해 적용이 간단하며, 실제 많은 물리적인 현상을 규명하는 데 다양하게 이용할 수 있다. 특히 고전 탄성이론에 의해 적절하게 해결될 수 없는 덤벨(dumbell) 분자로 이루어진 물체, 액체 결정체(liquid crystals), 과립상(granular)의 분자로 구성된 물체와 복합 섬유재료(composite fibrous materials) 등은 마 이크로폴라 탄성이론에 의해 잘 해결될 수 있다. 또한 마이크로폴라 탄성이론은 고체 내에서의 파의 전파(propagation)와 분산(dispersion), 구멍 주위의 응력집중과 외부 하중을 받는 물체에 있어 균열끝에서의 응력 분포 등의 고체역학 문제들은 물론이고, 경계층(boundary layer), 난 류(turbulence), 유체 유동의 불안정(instability)과 표면장력 현상 등의 유체역학에서의 복잡한 문제들을 해결하는 데에도 이용할 수 있다. 마이크로폴라 탄성이론은 고전 탄성이론에 비해 상 대적으로 새롭고 미개척 분야이긴 하지만 이론의 기반이 확고하기 때문에 앞으로의 회전응력 측정장치의 개발을 통해 미소구조의 영향을 고려해야 하는 많은 문제들을 해결하는데 큰 기여를 할 것으로 전망된다.

Behavior of Fatigue Crack Propagation from Surface Flaw (表面欠陷 에 發생하는 疲勞크랙擧動)

  • In terms of behavior of fatigue cracks propagated after build-up around the artificial drilled miro-hole, this study has been made of the build-up process of slips and micro cracks, behavior of micro-crack propagation and the definition of fatigue limit under the rotating bending stress with low carbon steel. The results of this study are as follows: (1) The fatigue limit is the repropagating critical stress for the nonpropagating cracks which have grown to some limit around the micro-hole in regard of the magnitude of micro-hole. (2) Behavior of the slips and micro-cracks initiation are occurring simultaneously in front and in rear of micro-hole tips in the view of the rotational direction, regardless of the magnitude of micro-hole. (3) Behavior of fatigue crack propagation is different from magnitude of micro-hole, its behavior is propagation of single crack about respectively large hole, but about respectively small hole, fatigue crack propagated joining phenomena of micro-cracks. (4) The behavior of fatigue fracture is affected by the factor of its defects in the view of magnitude of micro-hole when the diameter of the micro-holes are smaller than 50.mu.m, and this is also affected with the size effect of micro-hole diameter.

Simplified stress analysis of perforated plates using homogenization technique (균질화기법을 이용한 다공평판의 단순화된 응력해석)

  • A simplified stress analysis of perforated plates was carried out using homogenization technique. Homogenization technique, which introduced miroscale expansion in the standard finite element method, reconstructed the plate with regularly placed holes into a set of macroscale and microscale models. The microscale model helped compute homogenized material constants of the unit cell, which were used to compute macroscale displacements in the macroscale model. Also it was possible to compute the stress field of the plate using the microscale model. It was found that reasonable equivalent material constants were computed and that the required degrees of freedom was drastically reduced when homogenization technique was employed in the stress analyses. The microscale modeling in the homogenization technique provided a useful concept of pre- and post-processing in the stress analysis of perforated plates.

  • Liquid acquisition device in the liquid propellant supply system is required to protect entrance of gas bubble into the propulsion system. The device exploits the capillary effect of micro-sized poles in a screen and supplies pure liquid-phase propellant to the propulsion system. The bubble point is the most important performance parameter in the design of a liquid acquisition device. In this paper, performance parameters affecting the bubble point are identified through literature survey, in order to develop the experimental setup for the bubble point measurement.

A Study on Flame Extinction and Edge Flame Oscillation in Counterflow Diffusion Flame (대향류확산화염에서 화염소화와 에지화염진동에 관한 연구)

  • Experimental and numerical studies are conducted on the characteristics of flame extinction and edge flame oscillation in counterflow diffusion flames. The characteristics of flame extinction and edge flame oscillation are well described varying burner diameter, separation distance between two burners, global strain rate, and velocity ratio. It is verified numerically and experimentally that radial conduction heat loss significantly contributes to flame extinction and edge flame oscillation at low strain rate flames in zero- and micro-gravity. It is also shown that for appropriately small burner diameters flame extinction modes are grouped into four and these are significantly attributed to excessive radial conduction heat loss. The edge flame oscillation can be characterized well by one curve with Strouhal number and Peclet number.
