  • The x-ray micro-imaging technique was employed to measure the size and velocity of micro-bubbles moving in an opaque tube simultaneously. Phase contrast images were obtained at interfaces of micro-bubbles between water and air due to different refractive index. Micro-bubbles of $20\~120{\mu}m$ diameter moving upward in an opaque tube $(\phi=2.7mm)$ were tested. For two different working fluids of tap water and DI water, the measured velocity of micro-bubbles is roughly proportional to the square of bubble size.

  • The treatment of petroleum contaminated soil requires various physico-chemical remediation technologies which are efficient in time and can reduce the possibility of secondary contamination by themselves In this study, an innovated soil washing process was proposed to treat the diesel-contaminated soil. Micro-bubbles, which were generated by hydrogen peroxide, deserted and floated the contaminants. Soils less than #60(0.25mm) were artificially contaminated by 6,500mg TPH/kg dry soil initially. The process was examined for pH, the soil to water mixing ratio, concentration of $H_2O$$_2$, and contacting times. In the case of less than #60 soil, maximum removal efficiency(60%) was obtained at pH 12. 1.0% hydrogen peroxide, and 1 : 5 soil to water mixing ratio for 1 hour.

  • The characteristics of a gas-liquid Taylor (slug) flow in a square micro-channel with dimensions of $600{\mu}m{\times}600{\mu}m$ are experimentally investigated in this paper. The test fluids were nitrogen and water. The superficial velocities of the liquid and gas were in the ranges of 0.01 - 3 m/s and 0.1 - 3 m/s, respectively. The bubble and liquid slug lengths, bubble velocities, and bubble frequencies for various inlet conditions were measured by analyzing optical images obtained with a high-speed camera. It was found that the measured values (bubble and liquid slug lengths, bubble velocities) were not in good agreement with the values obtained using empirical models presented in the existing literature. Modified models for the bubble and liquid slug lengths and bubble velocity are suggested and shown to be in good agreement (${\pm}20$) with the measured values. Moreover, the bubble frequency could be predicted well by the relationship between the unit cell length and its velocity.

  • This study was conducted on the sediment remediation using micro-bubble to remove fine particles. For this study, characteristics of contamination and release in sediment were analyzed. And then, the characteristics of bubbles on removal efficiency was investigated at various operation conditions. In particle size distribution of the sediment used for the study, the proportion of clay and silt (<0.075 mm) was about 7.7%, sand (0.075~4.75 mm) was about 67.8%, and gravel (${\geq}4.75$) was 24.5%. Total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) of the sediment were 2,790~3,260, 261~311 mg/kg respectively. Ignition loss and water content were 4.1~9.6, 32.9~53.2% respectively. In analysis of removal efficiency according to operation conditions of micro-bubble, it was the highest when operation condition is pressure 6 atm, pressurized water ratio 30%, and coagulant dosage 15 ppm. At the time, the sediment's removal efficiency was 19.9%. Accordingly removal efficiency of TN and TP were 21.4, 22.6% respectively. Finally a research was found that fine particles in sediment were almost removed by micro-bubble, which led to decrease nutrients' release at about 20.1~64.3% in comparison to sediment including lots of fine particles.

  • The characteristics of $CO_2$ fixation by Chlorella HA-1 cultured in bubble columns were studied to achieve high photosynthetic rates per basal area. The influence of experimental conditions such as the diameter of a bubble column and gas flow rate, on photosynthesis of Chlorella HA-1 was investigated. The maximum productivity and the overall $CO_2$ fixation rate obtained in a 0.15 L bubble column was 1.09 g dry biomassa-day and 1048 g CO$_2/\m^2$-day, respectively. Light limitation has been observed in the bubble columns having a diameter larger than 3.5 cm.. As the reactor volume increased, the decrease of the $CO_2$ fixation rate was remarkable. High gas flow rate was helpful to mitigate the light limitation problem.

  • It is important to measure precisely the size and velocity of micro-bubbles used in various field. The synchrotron X-ray micro-imaging technique was employed to measure the size and velocity of micro-bubbles moving in an opaque tube simultaneously. Phase contrast images were obtained at interfaces of micro-bubbles between water and air due to their different refractive indices. The X-ray micro-imaging technique was found to measure an optical fiber with an accuracy of 0.2%. Micro-bubbles of 20∼60$\mu\textrm{m}$ diameter moving upward in an opaque tube (${\Phi}$=2.7mm) were tested to measure bubble size and up-rising velocity. For DI water, the measured velocity of micro-bubbles is nearly proportional to the square of bubble size, agreed well with the theoretical result. In addition, the synchrotron X-ray micro-imaging technique can measure accurately the size and velocity of several overlapped micro-bubbles.

  • Water and wastewater treatment has always been a challenging task due to the continuous increase in amount and the change in characteristics of the poorly biodegradable and highly colored organic matters, as well as harmful micro-organisms. Advanced techniques are therefore required to successfully remove these pollutants from water before reuse or discharge to receiving water bodies. Application of ozone, which is a powerful oxidant and disinfectant, alone or as part of advanced oxidation process depends on the complex kinetic reactions and the mass transfer of ozone involved. Micro- and nano bubbling considerably improves gas dissolution compared to conventional bubbles and hence mass transfer. It can also intensify generation of hydroxyl radical due to collapse of the bubbles, which in turn facilitates oxidation reaction under both alkaline as well as acidic conditions. This review gives the overview of application of micro- and nano bubble ozonation for purification of water and wastewater. The drawbacks of previously considered techniques and the application of the hydrodynamic ozonation to synthetic aqueous solutions and various industrial wastewaters are systematically reviewed.

  • In the flotation system for deinking process, the ink partcles musl collidc with the air bubbles for adhesion The probability of bubble-particle collision is largely dependent on the hydrodynamic conditions The main reason for the very small ink particles not to be able to float easily may be tound in the hydrodynamic effects, which make small ink particlcs move following the slreamlines around the bubbles rather than achually collide with bubbles. Also. the low floatabdily of the large and heavy ink particles is due to the gravity force and viscous drag which affect uprising molinn of particles through the liquid. Therefore, it is vely important to control not only the surface chemical conditions but the hydrodynamic conditions in practical floialion system
