  • The purpose of this study is to understand the characteristics of unburned carbon (UBC) and NOx emissions for pulverized coal when air staging combustion is applied. A two-staged drop tube furnace capable of applying air staging combustion was designed and installed. The combustion of sub-bituminous (Tanito) has been investigated. UBC and the NOx concentration were measured under various temperatures and stoichiometric ratios in unstaged and staged combustion. As a result, UBC decreased and the NOx concentration increased with an increase in stoichiometric ratio and temperature. In particular, the NOx reduction mechanism was activated when the temperature in the fuel rich zone increased. Both UBC and the NOx concentration decreased as the temperature increased in the fuel rich zone. A high NOx reduction effect was obtained, compared to the UBC increase, when the air staging technique was applied.

  • In the combustion of the pulverized coal compared with that of liquid fuel or gaseous fuel, serious pollutants such as ash, $NO_x$ and $SO_x$ are released to surroundings. The objective of this study is the reduction of such pollutants in the combustion process. The modeling of cyclone combustor which uses the method of two stage combustion was carried out. The main burner length, scattering angle and air/fuel ratio were considered as parameters. The results show that the shorter the main burner length is, the less the amounts of coals which exit the combustor directly are, but the scattered input of coal is required anyway in order to collect all ashes. It is recommended that the shorter the main burner length is, the less the scattering angle is. And in the case of the scattered input compared with no scattering, the temperature in the combustor is more uniform and the amount of volatile is more reduced.

  • This study focused on the effect of the biomass blended ratio on air-staged pulverized coal furnace. The hybrid NOx reduction technology between fuel blending and air staging has been applied in an air-staged pulverized coal fired furnace. The results indicated that co-firing biomass with coal could reduce NOx emissions in an air-staged combustion. In addition, carbon burnout and flame temperature increased under the air-staged condition. A dominant synergistic effect on NOx reduction and carbon burnout was observed when biomass co-firing with coal was applied in air staged combustion.

  • The objective of this study is development of low emission pulverized coal combustor for reducing pollutant emission generated from coal combustion. Low emission combustion technology for reducing NOx and fly ash was investigated by using 2 stage coaxial cyclone combustor. Staged combustion was employed for NOx reduction and high temperature slagging combustion was also studied for fly ash removal in the combustor. The result of this study shows that the low emission combustion system can reduce the amount of atmospheric pollutions with improved boiler efficiency and performance.

  • In oder to analyze the effect of operating conditions on pulverized coal combustion, a numerical study is conducted at the pulverized coal combustor. Eulerian approach is used for the gas phase, whereas Lagrangian approach is used for the particle phase. Turbulence is modeled using standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model. The description of species transport and combustion chemistry is based on the mixture fraction/probability density function(PDF) approach. Radiation is modeled using P-l model. The turbulent dispersion of particles is modeled using discrete random walk model. Swirl number of secondary air affects the flame front, particle residence time and carbon conversion. Primary/Secondary air mass ratio also affects the flame front but little affects the carbon conversion and particle residence time. Air-fuel ratio only affects the flame front due to lack of oxygen. Radiation strongly affects the flame front and gas temperature distribution because pulverized coal flame of high temperature is considered.

  • It is strongly desired for coal-fired power plants to utilize not only low-rank coals with high moisture contents, but also lowering cost with diversifying fuel sources. In this study, combustion characteristics of low rank coal with high moisture, and standard pulverized coals are experimentally investigated using TGA (Thermogravimetric Analysis) and DTF (drop tube furnace). The coals tested are three kinds of coal with moisture content ranging from 8.32 to 26.82%. The results show that under the air combustion condition, the burn-out time at TGA rises as moisture content increases, and standard pulverized coal with 8.32% moisture content showed the lowest activation energy of 55.73 kJ/mol. In case of the high amount of moisture, the combustion efficiency decreases due to evaporation heat loss, and unburned carbon in ash produced at combustion process in DTF increased. Aslo, initial deformation temperature of slag attached in alumina tube of DTF decreased with lowering the crytallinity of anorthite and augite. To improve the combustion reactivity and efficiency, it is effective to upgrade through drying the high moisture coal to moisture level (less than 10%) of standard pulverized coal.

  • In Korean coal power plants, rising coal prices have recently led to the rapid utilization of low lank coals such as sub-bituminous coal with low calorific values and low ash fusion temperatures. Using these coals beyond the design range has resulted in important issues including slagging and fouling, which cause negative effects in boiler performances and unstable operations. The purpose of this study is to observe slagging and fouling characteristics resulted from burning various ranks of pulverized coals. We have tested 3 different coals: FLAME(bituminous), KCH(sub-bituminous) and MOOLARBEN(bituminous)coals in the pilot system $50kW_{th}$ scale. A stainless steel tube with preheated air inside was installed in the downstream in order to simulate water wall. Collected ash on the probe and the slag inside the furnace near burner were analyzed by SEM (scanning electron microscopy) to verify the formation degree, surface features and color changes of the pasty ash particles. Induced coupled plasma and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were also performed to figure out the chemical characteristics of collected samples. As a result, KCH was observed that more slag was developed inside the walls of the furnace and on the probe than the other two kinds of coals, as shown in the calculate slagging and fouling indices as well.

  • The burning characteristics of interacting coal particles in a convective flow are numerically investigated at various Reynolds numbers. The transient combustion of 2-dimensionally arranged particles, both the fixed particle distances of 5 radii to 20 radii horizontally and 3 radii to 24 radii vertically, is studied. The results obtained from the present numerical analysis reveal that the transient flame configuration and retardation of particle temperature augmentation with the horizontal or vertical particle spacing substantially influence devolatilization process and carbon conversion ratio of interacting particles. Volatile release and carbon conversion ratio of the second particle with decreasing horizontal and vertical particle spacing decrease gradually, whereas those of the first particle with decreasing vertical particle spacing increases due to flow acceleration. When the vertical particle spacing is smaller than $6R_{o}$, volatile release and carbon conversion ratio of the second particle decrease greatly due to reduction of flame penetration depth.

  • This study is to investigate the effect of the moisture, volatile matter and particle size in the coal on the pulverized coal combustion characteristics using CFD. The results show that as the moisture content in coal increases, flame temperature decreases because of heat loss driven from latent heat of vaporization and reduction of heating value. As the volatile matter content in the coal increases, the temperature in the region near the burner increases, while the temperature in rear region of boiler decreases. The solution to keep the temperature in the rear region of boiler is suggested that particle size is needed to be larger. As the particle size increases, the temperature in the rear region of boiler show tendency to increase, for combustion burning time of coal could be extended.

  • To meet the environmental requirements, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co., Ltd. (Doosan) had developed low NOx pulverized coal burner and it was applied to boiler retrofit project, 130 ton/hr coal fired cogeneration boiler, in 2003. NOx emissionand unburned carbon (UBC) in fly ash were measured during the commissioning tests. In this paper, the operation results of low NOx pulverized coal burner installed in 130 ton/hr coal fired boiler are presented. Burners emitted 160 ppm (@6 % $O_2$ basis) NOx and 3 % UBC with Chinacoal containing 0.86 % fuel nitrogen. And also it was shown that NOx emission rate of low NOx pulverized coal burner is linearly increased with fuel-nitrogen fraction of coal.
