  • The main purposes of this study are to utilize mineralogical studies such as optical microscope, XRD and SEM/EDS analyses to characterize the oxidation of sulfide minerals and the mechanisms controlling the movement of dissolved metals from waste rocks at the abandoned Seobo mine. Mineralogical research of the waste rocks confirms the presence of anglesite, covellite, goethite, native sulfur and nsutite as secondary minerals, suggesting that these phases control the dissolved concentrations of As, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb and Zn. The dissolved metals are precipitated, adsorbed and/or coprecipitated with(or within) Fe(Mn)-hydroxides and Mn(Fe)-hydroxides. The main phases of secondary mineral, Fe-hydroxide, can be classified as amorphous or poorly crystalline and more crystallized phases(e.g. goethite) by crystallinity. Amorphous or poorly crystalline Fe-hydroxide has relatively high As contents(9-24 wt.%). This poorly crystalline Fe-hydroxide changes toward more crystallized phase(e.g. goethite) which contains relatively low As(0.6-7.7 wt.%). These results are mainly due to the progressive release of As with the crystallization evolution of the As-trapping poorly crystalline Fe-hydroxides. It is also attributed to the differences of specific surface areas between the poorly crystalline Fe-hydroxides and well crystallized phases. The dissolved metals from waste rocks at Seobo mine area are naturally attenuated by a series of precipitation(as Fe, Mn, Cu, Pb), coprecipitation(Fe, Mn) and adsorption(As, Cu, Pb, An) reactions. The results of mineralogical researches permit to assess the environmental impacts of mine waste rocks in the areas, and can be used as a useful data to lay available mine restoration plan.

  • Oriental mineral medicines are single or mixture of more than one mineral species or rock/fossil which are used to treat disease. Mineral medicines remove harmful or useless substances to decrease toxicity and secondary effects, and cause the manufacture of medical compounds with increased efficacy. The extraction test is an accepted in vitro system to predict the bioaccessibility of major and minor elements from mineral medicine. It incorporates gastrointerstinal tract parameters representative of a human body that including stomach and small intestinal pH which are the same as digestion condition. The bioaccessibility of a mineral medicine is the fraction that is soluble in the gastrointestinal environment and is available for absorption. Reaction path modeling in the human body can predict digestion with gastric fluid as well as absorption in the small intestine, existence in body fluids and reaction progress of the exhaust process according to pH conditions in body. Also reaction path modeling can predict bioavailability, which is equal to existence rate in the body and the form and amount of a medicine in the body after intake. The study results from predicating the existence form mineral medicines in the body, and proving the effective ingredient using bioaccessibitily and human risk assessment, suggest these that should be necessary data for new medicine development.

  • Jeju island has high potential productivity of livestock in terms of climate, geography, and economic prospect. Grass-land is now widespread and increasing rapidly year after year. However, the productivity of grass land is very low compared with that of main land. It is supposed that the low productivity is due to improper chemical properties of volcanic ash soil which is mostly distributed in the island. Volcanic ash soil, which have high alumina ratio, is characterized by the lack of bases and avilable phosphorous while its phosphorous fixation capacity is very high. In addition to poor chemical properties, low level of fertilization technique appears to be another limitation to grass production. Farmers have not given care to improve their soil to be suitable for grass cultivation. In order to increase the productivity of grassland in Jeju, the proper amounts of N, P, and K fertilizer should be applied following the improvements of poor chemical properties such as liming and a great deal of phosphorous increment, using mainly fused phosphate, based upon the balance of bases, and the application of organic matter and micro-elements which can be easily deficient in soil.

  • Vitamin B6(pyridoxine, pyridoxamine. and pyridoxal) is a dietary requirement in relatively small quantities for growth, health, and function in animals and fish. The metabolically active B6 is pyridoxal-5-phosphate(PLP). It does function as a coenzyme in number of enzymes(PLP-dependent enzymes) in which amino acids are metabolized, including decarboxylases, aminotransferases, sulfhydrases, tryptophanase, and hydroxylases. Vitamin B6 requirement is higher for fish because fish are fed much higher protein diet than land animals. B6 is also involved in metabolism of carbohydrates and lipids and essential for the synthesis of heme and serotonin. Deficiency signs in fish develop quickly, in cluding nervous disorders, convulsions, poor swimming coordination, skin lesions, edema, exophthalmos, and tetany. The conversion of vitamin B6 to metabolically active form(PLP) is catalyzed by pyridoxal kinase and pridoxine(pyridoxamine) oxidase. In this review, we summarized in detail the enzymatic studies on vitamin B6 metabolism and about the mechanisms and properties of a PLP-dependent enzyme.

  • The pupose of this study was to identify the material characteristics, firing environments and making techniques for the jar coffins from the Oryangdong kiln site and the Ungokdong tomb site in Naju. All jar coffins had very similar physical, mineralogical and geochemical characteristics, although it was excavated from the different sites. The wall thickness of the jar coffins was about 2.3 to 5.3 cm. Under the microscopy, the jar coffins include a large quantity of various quartz with some microcrystalline and showed partly orthoclase and biotite. It is presumed that the mineral sherds added to maintain the thick wall and to control the percentage of contraction during drying and firing of jar coffins and it has contained about 11.4 to 19.8 %. Firing temperature of the jar coffins is estimated as 1,000 to $1,150^{\circ}C$. Also, all jar coffins and soils show similar geochemical behavior of elements and clay-mineralization degree within the site. This indicates making that the soil is probable to be a raw material of the jar coffins. But it shows different characteristics in major elements of soils which is collected at the kiln floor and the trench region of the Oryangdong kiln site because of the lack of quartz and feldspar in the soils. Therefore, it can use of the jar coffins making clay, if it goes through a simple special process such as mixing temper.

  • Precambrian metamorphic rocks of southwest Sobaeksan massif consist of mainly granitic gneiss, porphyroblastic gneiss and quartzofeldspathic gneiss. The orthopyroxene-bearing rocks(charnockites) are found in the west of Hadong-Sancheong anorthosite complex. The charnockites are 3km wide, 12km long and divided into massive and foliated types based on their texture. The compositions of charnockites are comparable to granodiorite to adamellite and subalkaline. Variations in major and trace elemental abundances show typical magmatic differentiation trends. The geochemical data plotted on tectonic discrimination diagrams reveal that these charnockites were formed in the active tectonic environment. The massive and folidated charnockites are mainly composed of plagioclase, orthopyroxene, microcline, quartz and disseminated garnet. Camels generally show characteristic zonal textures with decreasing $X_{alm}$(0.74~0.83), $X_{Py}$ (0.07~0.12) and $X_{Mg}$ (0.12~0.08) and increasing $X_{grs}$(0.03~0.15) from core to rim. Metamorphic temperature and pressure of the charnockites estimated from orthopyroxene-garnet-plagioclase-quartz assemblages show wide range of variation of $600~900^{\circ}C$ and 2.5~7.5 kbar respectively. The results of P-T estimates indicate an anticlockwise P-T evolution path.

  • The distribution of the surface charges in two kinds of peats and their physico-chemical properties have a been studied by means of the potentiometric titration and by ion adsorption in different strength of electrolytes. The organic matter contents were 43.3% and 53.7% in Yeong Yang peat and Peong Tack peat, respectively. Their X-ray diffractograms showed that quartz was dominant in both peats, and illite, kaolinite, hydrated-halloysite and feldspars were contained in a trace. Total acidic group contents was 1.257me/g in Poeng Tack peat that was a little more than of Peong Yang heat were pKa values of Yeong Yang and Poeng Tack peat were 13.1 and 12.65, respectively. The titration curves at different ionic strength of electrolytes crossed at pH 3.9 and 4.4 in Yeong Yang peat, and pH 3.8 and 4.0 in Peong Tack peat. The pH ranges of suspensions when the net surfacecharge of the peats varied from positive to negative value were $pH\;4.55{\sim}5.20\;(NaCl)$ and $pH\;3.95{\sim}5.70\;(CaCl_2)$ in Yeong Fang peat, and $pH\;4.15{\sim}5.40\;(NaCl)$ and $pH\;3.80{\sim}4.15\;(CaCl_2)$ in Peong Tack peat. Therefore it is apparent that the zero point of charge of these peats was about pH 4.0.

  • This study was carried out to find the optimal operating conditions for separation of residual uranium from the simulated radwaste solution containing 19 elements, and to evaluate the validity of the process. The selected process was based on the solvent extraction with TBP(tributyl phosphate). As an extractor, two miniature mixer-settlers with a total of 18 stages were used. Extraction yield of U, Np and Tc was about 99.2%. 32.1%, and 99.9%, respectively. The other elements were coextracted in the range of 1~4%. Extraction yield of U exceeded those of the previous work performed with batch system, which resulted in the low extractability of U (about 80%) according to the coexisting element such as Nd and Fe. It was due to the characteristics of multi-stage extractor. On the other hand, low extractability of Np was caused by various oxidation states in the nitric acid medium. In the case of Tc, its high extractability may be attributed to the complex formation with Zr and U, which is not well proved yet. All elements extracted with TBP were stripped into aqueous phase more than 99% by 0.01M $HNO_3$. From the results, this process has no problem with respect to in the same step was required, because Np was distributed in the raffinate and U product, respectively.

  • In this study, an experimental study on the sorption properties of uranium(VI) onto a bentonite colloid generated from Gyeongju bentonite which is a potential buffer material in a high-level radioactive waste repository was performed as a function of the pH and the ionic strength. The bentonite colloid prepared by separating a colloidal fraction was mainly composed of montmorillonite. The concentration and the size fraction of the prepared bentonite colloid measured using a gravitational filtration method was about 5100 ppm and 200-450 nm in diameter, respectively. The amount of uranium removed by the sorption reaction bottle walls, by precipitation, and by ultrafiltration was analyzed by carrying out some blank tests. The removed amount of uranium was found not to be significant except the case of ultrafiltration at 0.001 M $NaClO_4$. The ultrafiltration was significant in the lower ionic strength of 0.001 M $NaClO_4$ due to the cationic sorption onto the ultrafilter by a surface charge reversion. The distribution coefficient $K_d$ (or pseudo-colloid formation constant) of uranium(VI) for the bentonite colloid was about $10^4{\sim}10^7mL/g$ depending upon pH and ionic strength of $NaClO_4$ and the $K_d$ was highest in the neutral pH around 6.5. It is noted that the sorption of uranium(VI) onto the bentonite colloid is closely related with aqueous species of uranium depending upon geochemical parameters such as pH, ionic strength, and carbonate concentration. As a consequence, the bentonite colloids generated from a bentonite buffer can mobilize the uranium(VI) as a colloidal form through geological media due to their high sorption capacity.
