Pervaporation membranes were fabricated by low temperature plasma treatment the concentrate butanol solution from fermentation process. Effects of power, reaction time, and monomer flow rate were examined to optimize the (W!FM)t value as 4.0389 x 109 J . min/kg. Various organic compounds were tested in plasma treatment. Contact angle and relative sorption ratio were examined in terms of membrane performance. With the increase of contact angle and relative sorption ratio separation factor was enhanced from 0.186 to 3.525. and butanol flux increased from 0.042 to 0.567 kglm2. hr. Hydrophobicity of the membrane increased the affinity with butanoL Heat of mixing for monomer with butanol was examined, but failed to find the trend, because plasma polymerization of monomer produced the new compounds much different from monomers.
Organophilic ZSM-5 membrane was synthesized on the inside of a porous stainless steel support by a hydrothermal secondary growth with seed crystals. They are used to separate n-butanol from its aqueous solution. Pervaporation characteristics such as a permeation flux and a separation factor are investigated as a function of the feed concentration and the operating temperature. The concentration of n-butanol was changed from 0.001 mole fraction to 0.015 mole fraction with an interval of 0.005 mole fraction; the operating temperature was controlled to be 25C, $35^{\circ}C$ and $45^{\circ}C$. When the operating temperature was $45^{\circ}C$, the flux of n-butanol significantly increased from 2 to $27g/m^2/hr$ as the mole fraction of n-butanol in the feed side increased from 0.001 to 0.015. Consequently, the concentration of n-butanol in the permeate substantially increased from 0.0016 to 0.052 mole fraction. When the feed concentration was 0.015, the flux of n-butanol significantly increased from 13 to $27g/m^2/hr$ as the operating temperature increased from $25^{\circ}C$ to $45^{\circ}C$. As a result, the concentration of n-butanol in the permeate also increased from 0.045 to 0.052 mole fraction.

Bio-butanol recovery by pervaporation was performed with dense and composite polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membranes. The pervaporative behavior of the membranes was investigated as a function of operation temperature $(20{\sim}40^{\circ}C)$ and membrane thickness $(100{\sim}1{\mu}m)$ using a series of aqueous BtOH model solutions $(1{\sim}5wt%)$. With the increment of the BtOH concentration in feed, the Butanol concentration in permeate, pervaporation selectivity of Butanol over water and Butanol permeation flux increased. As the operating temperature of feed solutions increased, the BtOH concentration in permeate, pervaporation selectivity and permeation flux increased markedly. As the thickness of the PDMS membrane decreased, permeation flux increased but pervaporation selectivity decreased. These results were explained in terms of high solubility and low diffusion resistance of BtOH over water toward hydrophobic and rubbery PDMS membranes.
critical micelle concentration (CMC) and the counter ion binding constant (B) in a mixed micellar state of the trimethyltetradecylammonium bromide (TTAB) with the polyoxyethylene (23) lauryl ether (Brij 35) at 25oC in water and in aqueous solutions of butanol isomers were determined as a function of 1 (the overall mole fraction of TTAB) by the use of electric conductivity method and surface tensiometer method. Various thermodynamic parameters (Xi, i, Ci, aiM, and Hmix) were calculated by means of the equations derived from the nonideal mixed micellar model. The results say that the effects of butanol isomers on the micellization of TTAB/Brij 35 mixtures have been in the order of n-butanol>iso-butanol>t-butanol> water.

The methanol extracts of perilla leaves reduced the mutagenicities mediated by of aflatoxin B$_1$(AFB$_1$), 3-amino-l-methyl-5H-pyrido (4,3-b) indole (Trp-P-2) and Benzo(a)pyrene (B(a)p) in Salmonella typhimurium TA98 and TA100. The methanol extracts were more fractionated, and the fractions of hexane and butanol revealed the antimutagenic activities against AFB$_1$ and B(a)p. The production of malondialdehyde (MDA) was decreased when the methanol extracts of perilla leaves were added to the system. The significantly higher antioxidative activity was observed in the butanol fraction. 2-Propyl furan, ethanedioic acid, dibutyl ester, benzaldehyde, 2-methyl-2-ethyl-3-hydroxy-propanoic acid and octahydro-3a-methyl-2H-inden-2-one were identified tentatively as major compounds from the butanol fraction.
Ethanol extracts of amur cork, elm root, plantain and dandelion which are edible and can be mass produced at farm were examined their inhibitory activity against food spoilage microorganisms at their concentrations and the extracts were fractionated by some solvents with checking effective fractionate. Above $500{\sim}2000\;ppm$ of the extracts inhibited completely the test microorganisms with a few exception. One thousand ppm of amur cork exract inhibited B. cereus completely. L. mesenteroides by 500 ppm of amur cork and 2000 ppm of elm root and plantain showed a pretty good inhibition. The extracts which showed good inhibition to the test microorganisms were fractionated with chroloform, ethylacetate, butanol and water in order and the fractionates of butanol and chroloform showed comparetively higher inhibition than others generally. Inhibition rate of each fractionate were as follows ; B. cereus was inhibited completely at 500 ppm of chroloform fraction, and 1000 ppm of ethyl acetate and butanol and L. mesenteroides was 500 ppm of butanol fraction. P. fluorescens was inhibited partly by 500 ppm of butanol and ethyl acetate fraction.
This study was carried out to compare the antioxidant activities of the ether, butanol, water extracts from chestnut inner shell(Castanea crenata Sieb. et Zucc.) with those of tocopherol and BHA in soybean oil. All additives were added to soybean oil on the quantities of 0.02%. Comparing the antioxidant activities under autooxidation condition at $45.0{\pm}0.5$ for 42days of the extracts were recorded in the order of butanol>ether>control>BHA>tocopherol depending on the solvent. Under the condition at $60.0{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$ for 32days, the butanol extracts represented the high antioxidation effect, however, there was no significant differences between the ether extracts and control. Under thermal oxidation condition, the ether extract showed stronger antioxidant activity than those of the butanol extract. In the results of polyphenol compound analysis, ellagic acid, quercetin, morin, naringenin, flavanol were included in the ether extracts and ellagic acid, naringenin, gallic acid, flavanol were included in the butanol extracts, respectively. Among them, ellagic acid in ether extract and gallic acid and naringenin in butanol extracts seed to increase the antioxidant activities in the substrate oil.

To measure antioxidative activities, the various extracts from Ulmus devidiana were examined in oil emulsion. Water, ethanol, methanol and butanol were used as extract solutions. The activity oxygen species ($H_2O_2,-OH,\;KO_2$) bound the extracts for antioxidative activities were excellent. The extracts bound $Fe^{2+}$ ion and $Cu^{2+}$ ion showed effective antioxidative activities and strong chelating effects. The concentration of $Fe^{2+}$ ion and total ion in ethanol and methanol extracts from Ulmus devidiana root parts (Chinese) were higher than those of the other products. The highest superoxide dismutase-like activities showed butanol extracts from Ulmus devidiana root parts (Chinese) and water extracts from Ulmus devidiana bark parts (Korean). Electron donating abilities and nitric scavenging abilities of ethanol, methanol and butanol extracts were higher than those of water extracts. The nitrite scavenging abilities also reached the maximum at pH 1.2 and the minium at pH 6.0.

The aim of the present investigation was to assess the oxidation inhibition by nitrogen oxide scavenging activity and physiological activities. Bioactive compound of proanthocyanidin $69.000{\pm}2.737mg$ catechin equivalents (CE)/g dry weight. Antioxidant effects (nitric oxide radical scavenging activity, nitrite scavenging activity, ${\beta}$-carotene bleaching assay and lipid peroxidation inhibition activity) of distilled water (DW), 70% ethanol and n-butanol extract of turmeric (Curcuma longa L.). Turmeric extracts yield were DW 17.11%, 70% ethanol 15.26% and n-butanol 4.12%, respectively. Oxidation inhibition activity of the samples exhibited a dose-dependent increase. However, in the current study, none of the samples evaluated showed activity as strong as the BHA and trolox. Total flavonoid content was the highest in the n-butanol extract, followed by 70% ethanol and DW extract. Further, nitrite scavenging activity was the highest for the n-butanol extract. As a result of this experiment, the turmeric can be utilized as a valuable and potential natural oxidation inhibition for the functional food industry.
We prepared extracts from Ulmus davidiana (root, Korean source; URK) and Ulmus davidiana (bark, Korean source; UBK). URK extracts obtained with all tested solvents showed the highest antioxidant effects on fish oils. Both treatments containing 0.1% (v/v) extract from URK and UBK each showed that peroxide values of 30 meq/kg were maintained for 6 h and levels of 40 meq/kg were apparent for up to 18 h, indicating that antioxidative activity seemed to sustain during all tested time periods. Compared with commercial antioxidants, butanol and methanol extracts diluted to 0.05% (v/v) had similar antioxidative effects. Water and butanol UBK extracts diluted to 0.1% (v/v) both showed the highest antioxidative activities. After addition of metal ions, methanol and butanol URK extracts diluted to 0.1% (v/v) showed enhanced antioxidative activity. UBK ethanol extracts displayed superior antioxidative activity and a constant peroxide value throughout storage. However, in the case of Perilla oil, $\alpha$-tocopherol which is known as a natural antioxidant did not show any antioxidative activity except in the BHT. Methanol and butanol URK extracts diluted to 0.2% (v/v) showed superior antioxidative activities throughout the experiment. A methanolic UBK extract (0.2%, v/v) also had a similarly increased antioxidative effect. In tests involving addition of metal ions to all extracts, the methanolic UBK extract (0.2%, v/v) showed excellent antioxidative activity. When lard was tested, antioxidant levels did not differ significantly among extracts prepared using four different solvents at either 0.05% or 0.1% concentrations (both v/v). Addition of metal ions at levels of 0.05% or 0.1% (w/v) to these extracts had no significant additive effect on oxidation.
