A large amount of waste copper slag containing about 35 ~ 45% iron has been generated and discarded every year from pyrometallurgical processes for producing copper from copper concentrate. Thus, recovery of iron from the waste copper slag is of great interest for comprehensive use of mineral resource and reduction of environment problems. In this study, a physico-chemical separation process for upgrading iron from the waste copper slag discharged as an industrial waste has been developed. The process first crushes the waste copper slag below 1 mm (first crushing step), followed by carbon reduction at $1225^{\circ}C$ for 90 min (carbon reduction step). And then, resulting material is again crushed to $-104{\mu}m$ (second crushing step), followed by wet magnetic separation (wet magnetic separation step). Using the developed process, a magnetic product containing more than 66 wt.% iron was obtained from the magnetic separation under a magnetic field strength of 0.2 T for the waste copper slag treated by the reduction reaction. At the same conditions, the percentage recovery of iron was over 72%. The iron rich magnetic product obtained should be used as a iron resource for making pig iron.

In this study, the different unit cement content by the ratio of water absorption and water-cement ratio are applied to examine the properties of the concrete used the aggregate recycled by the crushing treatment. According to the experimental results, in the mix of low strength and high water-cement ratio, both of the compressive strength is almost equal in the concrete using the recycled aggregate by the crushing treatment and the concrete using broken stones. It means that the recycled aggregate has the low effect of the amount of bonded mortar. But, in the mix of high strength and low water-cement ratio, the concrete using the recycled aggregate by the crushing treatment has 40% less of the compressive strength than that using broken stones by the effect of the amount of bonded mortar. On the other hand, after 8 weeks, the dry shrinkage of the recycled aggregate with 7% of the ratio of water absorption doubles that of the broken stones with 1% ($-350{\times}10^{-6}$), in other words $-700{\times}10^{-6}$. Thus, the dry shrinkage should be prior to any other conditions in recycling waste concrete for the aggregate for concrete. When the recycled aggregate with 3% of the ratio of water absorption is used, the compressive strength of the rich mix concrete ($450kg/m^3$ of the unit cement content) is equivalent to that of the concrete using broken stones, while in using the recycled aggregate with 7% of the ratio of water absorption, the rich mix concrete has 7% lower compressive strength than the concrete using broken stones. But, the compressive strength of the ordinary mix concrete ($350kg/m^3$ of the unit cement content) is far lower than that using broken stones.
In general after the etching process, waste etching solution contains metals. (ex. Nickel (Ni), Chromium (Cr), Zinc (Zn), etc.) In this work, we proposed a recycling process for waste etching solution and refining from waste liquid contained nickel to make nickel metal nano powder. At first, the neutralization agent was experimentally selected through the hydrolysis of impurities such as iron by adjusting the pH. We selected sodium hydroxide solution as a neutralizing agent, and removed impurities such as iron by pH = 4. And then, metal ions (ex. Manganese (Mn) and Zinc (Zn), etc.) remain as impurities were refined by D2EHPA (Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid). The nickel powders were synthesized by liquid phase reduction method with hydrazine ($N_2H_4$) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH). The resulting nickel chloride solution and nickel metal powder has high purity ( > 99%). The purity of nickel chloride solution and nickel nano powders were measured by EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic) titration method with ICP-OES (inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer). FE-SEM (field emission scanning electron microscopy) was used to investigate the morphology, particle size and crystal structure of the nickel metal nano powder. The structural properties of the nickel nano powder were characterized by XRD (X-ray diffraction) and TEM (transmission electron microscopy).
As a result of population growth and economic growth, household and industrial wastes continue to rapidly increase every year. Especially, sewage sludge produced at final stage is increasing with the constant construction and putting in good order of the sewage plant. In addition to the government's prohibition for filling up the sludge, it became more and more difficult to discharge wastes to the sea as London Dumping Convention '96 came into effect. And sewage sludge and the livestock wastes are expected to be thoroughly prohibited from discharging to the sea from 2012. So we need desperately economical and useful alternatives to compact and reuse these wastes. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the utilization of solidified sludge-soil mixture as an enhancement and covering material. To determine the proper mixed ratio of solidified sludge, this study conducted basic physical properties tests, compaction tests, uniaxial compression tests, and permeability test. It was found that the higher the ratio of solidified sludge, the lower the coefficient of permeability. Upon the results of particle size distribution, the mixed ratio of solidified sludge that meet the enhancement material condition was 59% or lower for SP granite soil and 48% or lower for SM granite soil respectively.
This study presents the carburization process for recycling sludge, which was formed during silicon wafer machining. The sludge used in the carburization process is a mixture of silicon and silicon carbide (SiC) with iron as an impurity, which originates from the machine. Additionally, the sludge contains cutting oil, a fluid with high viscosity. Therefore, the sludge was dried before carburization to remove organic matter. The dried sludge was washed by acid cleaning to remove the iron impurity and subsequently carburized by heat treatment under vacuum to form the SiC powder. The ratio of silicon to SiC in the sludge was varied depending on the sources and thus carbon content was adjusted by the ratio. With increasing SiC content, the carbon content required for SiC formation increased. It was demonstrated that substoichiometric SiCx (x<1) was easily formed when the carbon content was insufficient. Therefore, excess carbon is required to obtain a pure SiC phase. Moreover, size reduction by high-energy milling had a beneficial effect on the suppression of SiCx, forming the pure SiC phase.

Fresh dairy cow manure was mixed with dried sawdust at the following moisture contents and manure: sawdust ratios: 50% and 57:43 ($\underline{M50}$), 55% and 64:36 ($\underline{M55}$), 60% and 70:30 ($\underline{M60}$), 65% and 76:24 ($\underline{M65}$), 70% and 83:17 ($\underline{M70}$) 75% and 90:10($\underline{M75}$) and 80% and 96:04($\underline{M80}$). The mixtures were fermented by a fungal mycelium of Fomitella flaxinea for 2wk at 29 C to recycle cow manure along with sawdust and fungal mycelium as a ruminant feedstuff. Chemical composition and in vitro rumen dry matter digestibilities of fermented mixtures were compared with unfermented mixture. The crude protein contents of mixtures were not changed by fermentation with fungal mycelium. Neutral detergent fiber contents of 4WK fermented mixtures (90.6, 85.3, 80.4, and 76.4% for $\underline{M50}$, $\underline{M60}$, $\underline{M70}$ and $\underline{M80}$, respectively were lower (P<0.05) than those of unfermented mixtures (91.1, 89.9, 84.3, and 79.4%). However, acid detergent fiber contents of fermented mixtures (73.8, 68.9, 65.3, and 58.0%) were higher (P<0.05) than those unfermented mixtures (70.2, 67.8, 61.7, and 56.3%). In vitro rumen dry matter digestibilities of fermented mixtures for four weeks(49.4, 36.8, 28.6, and 22.3% for $\underline{M50}$, $\underline{M60}$, $\underline{M70}$ and $\underline{M80}$) were higher than those of unfermented mixtures(34.1, 27.5, 20.6, and 15.4%) (P<0.05).

In this study, silicon sludge from semiconductor dicing process is recycled to fabricate silica nanoparticles, which are applied as dispersing materials for electro-responsive (ER) smart fluid. In specific, metal impurities are removed from silicon sludge by acid washing to obtain the high-purity silicon powder. And then, silica nanoparticles are synthesized by facile hydrothermal method employing the silicon powder as reactant material. To control the size of silica nanoparticles, the reaction time of hydrothermal method is varied as 8, 15, 20, and 30 hours are applied to control the size of silica nanoparticles. Sizes of silica nanoparticles are increased proportionally to the reaction time owing to the increased numbers of hydrolysis and condensation reactions. As-synthesized silica nanoparticles are prepared as electro-responsive smart fluids by dispersing into silicon oil. Silica nanoparticles synthesized by 30 hours of hydrothermal reaction (SiO2-H30) exhibit the highest shear stress of 21.4 Pa under an applied electric field strength of 3.0kV mm-1. Such enhancement in ER performance of SiO2-H30 among various silica nanoparticles are attribute to the reinforcing effect originated from the mixed particle size, which allowing the formation of rigid chain-like structures. Accordingly, this study successfully propose a recycling method of silicon sludge to synthesize silica nanoparticles and their derived ER fluids, which may suggest new possibility to ESG management emphasizing the eco-friendliness.

Biogasification is a technology that produces environmentally friendly fuel using methane gas generated in the process of stably decomposing and processing organic waste. Biogasification is the most used method for energy conversion of organic waste with high moisture content, and is a useful method for organic waste treatment following the prohibition of direct landfill (2005) and marine dumping (2013). Due to African Swine Fever (ASF), which recently occurred in Korea, recycling of wet feed is prohibited, and consumers such as dry feed and compost are negatively recognized, making it difficult to treat food waste. Accordingly, biogasification is attracting more attention for the treatment and recycling of food waste. Korea's energy consumption amounted to 268.41 106toe, ranking 9th in the world. However, it is an energy-poor country that depends on foreign imports for about 95.8% of its energy supply. Therefore, in Korea, the Renewable Energy Portfolio Standard (RPS) is being introduced. The domestic RPS system sets the weight of the new and renewable energy certificate (REC, Renewable energy certificate) of waste energy lower than that of other renewable energy. Therefore, an additional incentive system is required for the activation of waste-to-energy. In this study, the operation of an anaerobic digester that treats food waste, food waste Leachate and various organic wastes was confirmed. It was intended to be used as basic data for preparing the waste-to-energy incentive system through precise monitoring for a certain period of time. Four sites that produce biogas from organic waste and use them for power generation and heavy gas were selected as target facilities, and field surveys and sampling were conducted. Basic properties analysis was performed on the influent sample of organic waste and the effluent sample according to the treatment process. As a result of the analysis of the properties, the total solids of the digester influent was an average of 12.11%, and the volatile solids of the total solids were confirmed to be 85.86%. BOD and CODcr removal rates were 60.8% and 64.8%. The volatile fatty acids in the influent averaged 55,716 mg/L. It can be confirmed that most of the volatile fatty acids were decomposed and removed with an average reduction rate of 92.3% after anaerobic digestion.

The final purpose of this study is to examine the uses of coal ash, by-product from thermal power plant as a type of filling-embankment materials and the reuses of ash ponds. In this time, to investigate the dynamic properties, we made the test piece specimen with coal ashes, and obtained the damping ratio. In place(ash pond), the damping property by underground wall was investigated before and after soil improvements. The damping ratio of coal ash test piece specimen of 12% cement is the highest and that of 9% cement or chemical grout, that of 6% cement is in order. In same coal ash test piece, the damping ratio increases with decreasing the void ratio. In conclusion, it could be said that the damping ratio increases with the stiffness of materials. In the ash pond, the damping effect is the most when trench is set through the vibration wave propagation course, and when soil is improved the higher stiffness of the improved soil is, the more damping effect appeared. It is justified to obtain not only the dropping of permeability and the strength increase, but also the damping effect fairly by soil improvements.
Cement mortar was hydrothermal-synthesized with particle size of tailings using scheelite tailings deposited without proper treatment, and its physical properties were investigated. The mixing ratios of water-cement and sand-cement were fixed at 75 % and 400 %, respectively, during preparing cemnt mortar, and the sand was replaced by the tailings at 0 ~ 50 %. The particle size of tailings was controlled at 9.3 ~ 53.0 ℃, and the hydrothermal temperature was kept at 60 ~ 180 ℃ for 6 hours after the temperature increased to pretermined temperature with 2 ℃ heating rate. The compressive strength increased with increasing hydrothermal temperature. The compressive strengths were 55.2 MPa and 54.5 MPa when the mortars were prepared with 30 % low arsenic and high arsenic tailings after 60 min grinding. The compresiive strenght was enhanced 300 % compared with reference sample.
