  • The purpose of this study was to examine the importance of personal attributes as they related to developing first impressions and managing group acceptance in the context of sorority recruitment process. Specifically, we examined how certain personal characteristics of a sorority member were related to her use of a potential member's clothing and appearance as non-verbal cues during the member selection process. The characteristics identified through the literature review were materialism, fashion clothing involvement, and proximity of clothing to self. A questionnaire was distributed to members of two sorority houses at a southeastern university in the United States. A total of 140 US sorority members participated in the study. The results showed that a member's satisfaction with her chapter, her level of participation, and her length of membership in the chapter had no relation with her tendency to base her member selection on clothing and appearance. However, members' use of clothing and appearance as guiding their member selection decisions was related to other individual characteristics selected for the study(materialism, fashion clothing involvement, and proximity of clothing to self). Fashion clothing involvement and proximity of clothing to self(clothing for acceptance) were most significantly related to clothing-based member selection. Partial correlations were also produced to examine the mediating role of clothing-based impression formation.

The survey was administered to 426 women in their twenties living in Seoul and Kyungki region. SPSS packages were applied to find out the results of ANOVA Duncans multiple range tests, means, standard deviation, factor analysis, and regression analysis. The major findings of this study could be summerized as follows; First, the subordinate parts of symbolic consumption was divided into these three parts; fashion oriented consumption, brand oriented consumption, hedonic consumption. The average of hedonic consumption was higher than other subordinate parts of symbolic consumption. Korean students pursuited happiness more than utility and accomplishment, but Chinese students pursuited accomplishment more than happiness and practicality. The students were divided into the happiness pursuit, the utility pursuit, and the accomplishment pursuit. The group size of the utility pursuit and the happiness pursuit among Korean students and the utility pursuit and the accomplishment pursuit among Chinese students were larger. Korean students preferred fashionability, psychological dependence, sexual attraction of clothing more, but Chinese preferred conformity more. • The purpose of this study was to identify the impact of personal values on fashion orientation. As personal values, this study adopted materialism and consumer conformity. Data were gathered by surveying university students living in Seoul metropolitan area using convenient sampling, and 325 questionnaires were used in the statistical analysis. In analyzing data, confirmatory factor analysis and path analysis were conducted using structural equation modeling. Confirmatory factor analysis revealed that fashion orientation has three factors such as fashion leadership, fashion interest, and importance of being well dressed. Path analysis showed that centrality factor of materialism spurred all three factors of fashion orientation and that happiness factor of materialism gave rise to importance of being well dressed of fashion orientation. Informational conformity also significantly increased all three factors of fashion orientation.
