This study presented the effects of the assumed mass-size relationship for snow on the simulated surface precipitation by using cloud microphysics parameterizations in Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. The selected cloud microphysics parameterizations are WRF Double-Moment 6-class (WDM6) and WRF Single-Moment 6-class (WSM6) in the WRF model. We replaced the mass-size relationship for snow in WDM6 and WSM6 with Thompson's mass-size relationship retrieved from measurement data. The sensitivity of the modified WDM6 and WSM6 was tested for the idealized 2-dimensional squall line and winter precipitation system over the Korean peninsula, respectively. The modified WDM6 and WSM6 resulted in the increase of graupel/rain mixing ratios and the decrease of snow mixing ratio in the low atmosphere. The changes of hydrometeor mixing ratio and surface precipitation could be due to the collision-coalescence process between raindrops and snow and the graupel melting process.
Recently, interest in and use of drones is increasing. In this study, to provide accurate wind prediction at ultra low altitudes of 150 meters or below, the sensitivity of the physical process parameterization and initial conditions was assessed to select the optimal physical process and initial conditions. For this purpose, GFS and LDAPS data were used as initial and boundary conditions, and 7 experiments were constructed using a combination of PBL schemes such as YSU, RUC, ACM2, and LSM such as Noah, RUC, and Pleim. The experiment conducted for 1 month in April 2018. As a result, the RUC-YSU physical process combination using the GFS initial data showed the best performance. This study is meaningful in establishing an optimal modeling method for ultra low altitude wind prediction through experiments using different initial conditions and combination of physical processes.
This study is concerned with the optimization of models using MM5 and WRF mesoscale numerical models to simulate strong sea surface winds, such as that of typhoon Shanshan on 17 September 2006, and the Siberian high event on 16 December 2006, which were selected for displaying the two highest mean wind speeds. The model optimizations for the lowest level altitude, physical parameters and horizontal resolution were all examined. The sea surface wind values obtained using a logarithmic function which takes into account low-level stability and surface roughness were more accurate than those obtained by adjusting the lowest-level of the model to 10 m linearly. To find the optimal parameters for simulating strong sea surface winds various physical parameters were combined and applied to the model. Model grid resolutions of 3-km produced better results than those of 9-km in terms of displaying accurately regions of strong wind, low pressure intensities and low pressure mesoscale structures.
The effects of vertical resolutions and planetary boundary layer (PBL) physics schemes in a numerical simulation with a very high resolution over the metropolitan area were investigated. The numerical experiments using the Weather Research and Forecast model were conducted from 0000 UTC 25 October to 0000 UTC 26 October 2013. We verified the numerical results against with six hourly observation data from the radiosonde at Seolleung, which was located in southern part of Seoul, and forty three auto weather systems in Seoul. In the experiments of vertical resolutions in low level atmosphere with 44, 50, and 60 layers, which are set to be subdivided particularly under 2 km height. The experiment in 60 layers, which has the highest vertical resolution in this study, showed relatively a clear diurnal variation of PBL heights. Especially, the difference of PBL heights and 10-meter wind fields were mainly seen in the area of high altitude lands for the experiments of vertical resolution. In the sensitivity experiment of PBL schemes such as asymmetric convective model-version 2 (ACM2), Yonsei University (YSU), and Mellow-Yamada-Janjic (MYJ) to the temperature, all three PBL schemes revealed lower temperature than observed profile from the radiosonde in the entire period. The experiments with YSU PBL and ACM2 PBL schemes show relatively less biased in comparison with the experiment of the MYJ PBL scheme.

Research papers published in the Korean Meteorological Society (KMS) journals by the members of KMS since the establishment of KMS in 1963 in the field of atmospheric physics are summarized. A significant number of research papers published in other international journals are also cited in this paper to highlight the achievement of the KMS members in international academic community. The aim is to illustrate the historical development of research activities of the KMS members in the field of atmospheric physics, and indeed it is found that the KMS members have made enormous progress in research publications quantitatively and qualitatively in the field of atmospheric physics. In detail, however, observational studies of aerosol physical properties and cloud and precipitation physics were very active, and studies on cloud physics parameterization for cloud modeling were highly recognized in the world, but observational and theoretical studies of atmospheric radiation were relatively lacking and solicit more contribution from the KMS members.
This paper reviews various bulk-type cloud microphysics parameterizations (BCMPs). BCMP, predicting the moments of size distribution of hydrometeors, parameterizes the grid-resolved cloud and precipitation processes in atmospheric models. The generalized gamma distribution is mainly applied to represent the hydrometeors size distribution in BCMPs. BCMP can be divided in three different methods such as single-moment, double-moment, and triple-moment approaches depending on the number of prognostic variables. Single-moment approach only predicts the hydrometeors mixing ratio. Double-moment approach predicts not only the hydrometeors mixing ratio but also the hydrometeors number concentration. Triple-moment approach predicts the dispersion parameter of hydrometeors size distribution through the prognostic reflectivity, together with the number concentrations and mixing ratios of hydrometeors. Triple-moment approach is the most time expensive method because it has the most number of prognostic variables. However, this approach can allow more flexibility in representing hydrometeors size distribution relative to single-moment and double-moment approaches. At the early stage of the development of BMCPs, warm rain processes were only included. Ice-phase categories such as cloud ice, snow, graupel, and hail were included in BCMPs with prescribed properties for densities and sedimentation velocities of ice-phase hydrometeors since 1980s. Recently, to avoid fixed properties for ice-phase hydrometeors and ad-hoc category conversion, the new approach was proposed in which rimed ice and deposition ice mixing ratios are predicted with total ice number concentration and volume.

This study presents a practical procedure for the Bayesian inversion of geophysical data. We have applied geostatistical techniques for the acquisition of prior model information, then the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method was adopted to infer the characteristics of the marginal distributions of model parameters. For the Bayesian inversion of dipole-dipole array resistivity data, we have used the indicator kriging and simulation techniques to generate cumulative density functions from Schlumberger array resistivity data and well logging data, and obtained prior information by cokriging and simulations from covariogram models. The indicator approach makes it possible to incorporate non-parametric information into the probabilistic density function. We have also adopted the MCMC approach, based on Gibbs sampling, to examine the characteristics of a posteriori probability density function and the marginal distribution of each parameter.
