Physical layer network coding (PNC) was first introduce by Zhang et al. for two-way relay channels (TWRCs). By utilizing the PNC, we can complete two-way communications within two time slots, instead of three time slots required in non-PNC systems. Recently, the upper and lower bounds for a bit error rate (BER) of PNC have been analyzed for fading channels. In this paper, we derive an exact BER of the PNC for the TWRC over fading channels. We determine decision regions based on the nearest neighbor rule and partition them into several wedge areas to apply the Craig's polar coordinate form for computing the BER. We confirm that our derived analysis accurately matches with the simulation results.

In this paper, we investigate the effect of multiple antennas at a relay node on the performance of physical-layer network coding (PNC) in the two-way relay channel (TWRC). We assume that two source nodes have a single antenna and the relay node has multiple antennas. We extend the conventional TWRC environment with a signle antenna at both relay and source nodes to the case of multiple antennas at the relay node. In particular, we consider two decoding strategies: separate decoding (SD) and direct decoding (DD). The SD decodes each packet from the two sources and performs the network coding with bit-wise exclusive OR (XOR) operation, while the DD decodes the network-coded packet from the two sources. Note that both decoding strategies are based on log-likelihood ratio (LLR) computation. It is shown that the bit error rate (BER) performance becomes significantly improved as the number of antennas at the relay node.

In this paper, a binary-coded physical-layer network coding (PNC) is considered when high-order modulation techniques are used at source nodes in wireless communication environments. In the conventional PNC schemes, tight power control and phase compensation are required at a relay node. However, they may not be feasible in practical wireless communication environments. Thus, we do not assume the pre-equalization in this paper, and we only utilize the channel state information at receiver (CSIR). We propose a signal detection method for the binary-coded PNC with high-order modulation, such as QPSK and 16QAM, at the source nodes, while the conventional scheme only consider the BPSK at source nodes. We also analyze the bit-error performance of the proposed technique in both uncoded and coded cases.

In this paper, we investigate the physical layer network coding (PNC) technique in a two-way relay channel (TWRC) where two source nodes send and receive data with each other via a relay node. In particular, we consider the communication scenario where packet length from the two sources is different from each other. We analyze the bit error rate (BER) of the received packet at the relay node according to degree of overlapping between two packets. The BER of the short packet remains unchanged regardless of the degree of overlapping since the entire packet is overlapped with the longer packet, while the BER of the longer packet becomes improved as the degree of overlapping decreases. Thus, we need a novel transmission scheme to enhance BER performance of the PNC technique in TWRC environments since the overall BER performance of the PNC technique at the relay node depends on the worse BER between two ovelapping packets' BERs.

In this paper, we investigate a physical-layer network coding (PNC) in a two-way relay channel (TWRC) where two sources send and receive data with each other by help of a relay node with multiple antennas. We focus on the multiple-access phase of the TWRC in this paper. It is assumed that the source nodes do not know the wireless channel and the wireless channel independently varies in time, that is, fast fading environments. At the relay node, the channel is assumed to be perfectly known. The relay node utilizes the channel sate information and applies maximum likelihood ratio for detecting received signals. Through extensive simulations, it is shown that a bit error rate (BER) performance becomes improved as the number of antennas at the relay node increases.

Recently, RF energy harvesting, in which energy is collected from the external RF signals, is considered as a promising technology to resolve the energy shortage problem of wireless sensors. In addition, it is important to guarantee secure communication between sensors for implementing Internet-of-Things. In this paper, we propose a power splitting-based network analog coding for maximizing a physical layer security in 2-hop networks where the wireless-powered relay can harvest energy from the signals transmitted by two sources. We formulate systems where two sources, relay, and eavesdropper exist, and find an optimal power splitting ratio for maximizing the minimum required secrecy capacity using an exhaustive search. Through simulations under various environments, it is demonstrated that the proposed scheme improves the minimum required secrecy capacity by preventing the eavesdropper from overhearing source signals, compared to the conventional scheme.

Recently, the energy shortage of sensors and the leakage of private information are considered as serious problems as the number of sensors is increasing due to the technological advance in Internet-of-Things. RF energy harvesting, in which sensors collect energy from external RF signals, and physical layer security become increasingly important to solve these problems. In this paper, we propose a time switching-based network analog coding for improving information security in wireless networks where the relay can harvest energy from source signals. We formulate 2-hop relay networks where an eavesdropper tries to overhear source signals, and find an optimal time switching ratio for maximizing the minimum required secrecy capacity using mathematical analysis. Through simulations under various environments, it is shown that the proposed scheme improves the minimum required secrecy capacity significantly, compared to the conventional scheme.

Recently, the volume of mobile data traffic increases exponentially due to the emergence of various mobile services. In order to resolve the problem of mobile traffic increase, various new technologies have been devised. Especially, two-way relay communication in which two nodes can transfer data simultaneously through relay node, has gained lots of interests due to its capability to improve spectral efficiency. In this paper, we analyze the SM-PNC which combines Physical-layer Network Coding (PNC) and Spatial Modulation (SM) under two-way relay communication environment. Log-Likelihood Ratio (LLR) is considered and both separate decoding and direct decoding have been taken into account in performance analysis. Through performance evaluation, we have found that the bit error rate of the proposed scheme is improved compared to that of the conventional PNC scheme, especially when SNR is high and the number of antennas is large.

In this paper, we evaluate the performance of multi-hop transmissions in IEEE 802.15.6 ultra wide band (UWB) wireless body area network (WBAN). The packet structure in the physical layer, and encoding and decoding are considered for multi-hop transmissions in IEEE 802.15.6 UWB WBAN. We analyze the data success rate and energy efficiency of multi-hop transmissions with considering the length of data payload, transmission power, and distances between the nodes in IEEE 802.15.6 UWB WBAN. Through simulations, we evaluate the data success rate and energy efficiency of multi-hop transmissions with varying the length of data payload, transmission power, and distances between the nodes in IEEE 802.15.6 UWB WBAN. Finally, we can select an energy-efficient multi-hop transmission in IEEE 802.15.6 UWB WBAN depending on the length of data payload, transmission power, and distances between the nodes.

The network interference gives positive and negative effects to security and QoS simultaneously by disturbing the decoding of receiver and eavesdropper. The transmission of artificial noise enables to indirectly control these contradicting effects. This paper proposed the secrecy enhancement technique via artificial noise with protected zones of transmitter and receiver and investigated its gain by using stochastic geometry. For given arbitrary artificial noise power ratio, we first analyzed connection outage probability and secrecy outage probability for four different scenarios (separated, overlapped, included secrecy protected zones- type A, B) according to distance and size of protected zones of the transmitter and receiver. We then derive the secrecy transmission rate and find the optimal artificial noise power ratio to maximize it. Finally, with numerical examples, we investigate the effects of the system parameters such as size of protected zones of transmitter and receiver on the optimal artificial noise power ratio.
