  • This essay focused on mapping out the next archiving model during 15 years. This metaphorical 'JINGU PROJECT' is titled from Shinto relation in Japan rebuilding every 20 years. We need some kinds of self sustainable growth archiving model. It means that it's time to say about our archiving experiences in field for archiving technics and knowledges. We should know the fact that a few thousands archivists have been acting ih fields. Since 1999, we have tried to build up the best practices in public offices. So far, So good. However, we need another wing for better flying from now on. I believe in the power of silences in field because they will speak up their voices.

  • Folklife archival science(folklife: Folklore is generally used in Engish-speaking countries but it has a strong meaning as remnants of former times. That's why I am useing the term-folklife instead of folklore in this paper. I think folklife is more appropriate term for expressing studies on daily life culture and also my intention to unite the both word in this paper) is a new academic movement, I propose, which is intended on convergence of advantage of folklife and archival science. In other words, taking advantage of the two branches of study(folklife, archival science), it becomes a practical studies which systematically organize records, preservations and application on living culture in any community. It demonstrate deeply on archiving and archive and It conducts a probe into records, preservations and applications. It is a method of technical study in order to record communities like village, rural society and modern city. In the mean time, there is no well defined and established methodology for archival science and for folk-area or community archiving. And therefore, It needs a research methodology in a folklife. In the other hand, there is a lack of a theoretical basis, methodological strategy and clear vision over folklife and field survey or method of survey. Therefore, converging advatage of the two studies(folklife, archival science), we can combine professionalism of community archiving and methodological strategy together.

  • The use of records has been regarded as the ultimate goal of preserving records, and reference services are considered key tasks in records management. Particularly in Korea where the importance of archives and records management is not recognized sufficiently, we need to help the public recognize the importance of institutions, managing archives, and archives kept in the archives, and create new uses. In order for archives to notify archives, institutions and managing archives to potential users, they can use publications, exhibitions and education programs. In foreign countries, services such as public programs and outreach services have already been being executed by archives in order to publicize the archives actively to the public, and various supports are provided so that people can use archives in educational activities. What is more, publishing and exhibition programs are also linked to education, which can increase the use of archives and promote archives culture. Thus, archives play important cultural and educational roles. As archives' roles are being expanded and local archives are being established compulsorily in Korea, archives should play their roles not just as administrative agencies collecting official documents but also as cultural and educational institutions providing various forms of information and education. Creating new demands for important archives by notifying such archives through public programs approaching users, they should find ways for laying the ground for their existence. The objectives of this study are to look for the method of public program operation suitable for the Korean situation, to define abilities and roles required to archives as program planners, and ultimately to increase the use of archives and contribute to the settlement of archives culture.

  • Conservation treatment of metallic artifacts contaminated with corrosion and foreign substances requires changes in the shape, characteristics, weight and thickness of the artifacts. Thus far, recording the changes after conservation treatment has mainly been performed through visual observation and photography, which lacks any quantitative description of the changes. In this study, the processes of removing foreign substances, joining cracks, and restoring an affected area were recorded using 3D scanning and then quantitatively analyzed to identify changes in form due to conservation treatment. The volume change after the conservation process was calculated based on the results of the 3D scanning, and numerical data on the changes to the form was analyzed. It was revealed that the foreign or corroded substances removed after the conservation accounted for 18.1 cm3, which is approximately 52% of the total volume of the ring pommel, and those substances were removed from about 98% of the surface of the ring pommel. This study confirmed that 3D form analysis was useful for recording the processes of conservation treatment and analyzing the results. It is therefore believed that this methodology can be applicable to not only metal artifacts, but to cultural heritage items in a range of materials.

  • This study intends to rehabilitate the memories of the social other which have been gradually forgotten in the social events overloaded with the undemocratic violence in South Korea today. This study explores a case of Yongsan Tragedy in 2009 among the most tragic events. It notes the autonomous ways in which activist artists would like to memorize the socio-historical events anew despite the emptiness of public records. In other words, this study considers the Yongsan case to be significant that a group of the public, artists, grassroots activists, religion men got together in solidarity so as to create the contested narratives countering dominant memories and thus to signify the records written by the civil society. Among others, activist artists had documented the unofficial counter-memories of socially alienated peoples in terms of planning a series of artistic events such as opening some gallery exhibitions and performance events, issuing a volume of work books, comics and photographies, online broadcasting, and directing some documentaries. Especially, this paper tends to note the documentation of on-site activist artists to record the counter-memories against social oblivion. By doing so, it finally suggests how we could document the Yongsan Tragedy both to search out the archival implications of today's art activism and to insert those artistic records into the commonly shared counter-memories in a more inclusive way.

  • This study analyzed the issues on Article 35-4 of the Copyright Act of Korea, a new provision on the use of orphan works. The new provision was compared to other related provisions, and considerations were suggested for their improvement. The main results are summarized as follows: (1) Article 35-4 is contradictory to other provisions and needs further revisions as it limits the subject of application to the main body of operation and applies only to some libraries, museums, and galleries through its ordinances; (2) a new provision on the use of orphan works must be applied to archives to harmonize with Article 31 and use the interconnection between cultural heritage institutions more beneficially; and (3) considering that there are many unpublished works in the archives, Article 35-4 should be revised to also be applicable to those works.

  • The purpose of the study is to analyze how to document survey and repair data on wooden architecture culture assets. Documentation was analyzed in comparison to digital developments from the past to the present. Although the accuracy of survey equipment has been improved by digital development, survey drawing has not changed. For example, a 3D Scanner, survey equipment, was introduced but is being used for conversion into 2D data. Data provided by the drawing included in the survey and repair reports were not accumulated. As it stands, it is inaccessible and disorganized. Data generated from the survey, repair, and maintenance has to be consistent. A BIM system was proposed to integrate information on wooden architecture cultural assets.

  • For a society to be constantly sustained, it needs its past memories to be made present into cultural memories. The state of oblivion resulted from the time difference of the past and the present is commonly made present into commemoration days or memorial spaces. Each has its own form of representation it reflects, but all are related to how past is remembered and how it will be formed. Records, especially the authentic records the nation secured, have an ontological feature of proof that is able to persuade the current present of the past present, and inherent in it is faith that originates from fundamental objectivity. Therefore the image of silence that such strictness of records creates realizes the detonation of specific memories through the act of visual exhibition. Hence, this paper endeavors to examine how the national records, particularly the photographical records, was utilized and how it influenced the people and the society after its organization, through analysing examples of memorial spaces.
