  • In this study, examined are the characteristics of 'One Book, One City' reading campaigns conducted in Seattle. Chicago, and 'The Big Read', a nationwide 'One Book' campaign, supported by the NEA, in the U.S.A. and Seoul and Cheongju in Korea. Some differences as well as similarities were found in the goal setting, selection of books, strategies for reading and discussion, and programs of these 'One Book' reading campaigns. While, as a mass reading event, 'One Book' reading campaigns in various communities share the goal of promoting literacy and communication through reading and discussion, each 'One Book' campaign seems to show uniqueness in the criteria of book selection, reading and discussion guides, and the activities and Programs. which make up cultural contents.

  • The objective of this study is to analyze the characteristics of Cutter's Expansive Classification. The four elements about classification evaluation were applied to analyze it. Results show that first, from philosophy and religion class to literature class, the order of main classes is logical and evolutionary. Second, the notation is a pure notation including author mark. Third, the classification is expansive from first classification to seventh classification. Science classes were expanded in the second classification comparing to the first classification. From the third classification, all classes were expanded. Fourth, it was applied by the local list to indicate places emphasizing connection of geographical space.

  • This study examines the concept of the FRBR model of IFLA, which stratifies the bibliographic relationships between related works and bibliographic records and effectively links them, as well as the problems occurring in the applied cases. Moreover, it modifies the FRBR model by accepting the excluding perspectives of main entry heading and introducing ISTC as a linking device of the related work. This study examines the validity of the M-FRBR model by applying it to Korean literature, resettles the data elements of MODS based on the M-FRBR model. and realizes a bibliographic system based on the modified record format.

  • The access to literary works, including fictions, has focused on descriptive elements, and the subject access has been confined to denotative elements such as the subject matter, name of character and geographical name, etc, which appear in the work. This practice will not lead to the essence of subject of fiction, and does not reflect the demand of users for the subject who pursue aesthetic experience. In this study, concepts of symbol and motif and their possibility to be used as subject access point are considered to enhance a subject access scheme. In addition, this study tries to build the scheme of symbol and motif by using the glossary as the source of information. The composed schemes are applied to 20th century Korean fictions and its usability and limits are discussed.

  • IFLA's FRBR model is a significant contribution to cataloging on both theoretical and practical grounds. This paper provides a brief overview of FRBR, a methodology for applying the FRBR work concept to a random sample of 1,000 bibliographic records taken from Korean National Bibliographic, and estimates of the number of works in Korean National Bibliographic and their associated characteristics, based on analysis of the sample. FRBR model can be applied to 16.9% of all works in Korean National Bibliographic. Results suggest that the majority of benefits associated with applying FRBR to Korean National Bibliographic could be obtained by concentrated on a relatively small number of complex works.

  • This research is a case study with the subject of 5th grade elementary students, practice a developmental bibliotherapy, and check the influence on the self-actualization. The subjects of this research is 20 students of 5th grade C elementary school in Gyeonggi Province, (including experimental group.10 students, control group: 10 students) and we practiced 12 times for 6 weeks. The result of the experimental group represents meaningful effects in the scales of inner-directed, self-actualization value, feeling reactivity, spontaneity, self-regard, self-acceptance. Then, we found in the lasting scale that the effect was lasting after 3 weeks. Therefore, we conclude that a developmental bibliotherapy can gives elementary students a positive influence, and help them form their proper notion as human being.

  • This study compares various speech rates of Korean learners with those of native Korean. Speech data were collected from 34 native Koreans and 33 Korean learners (19 Chinese and 14 Japanese). Each participant recorded a 9 syllabled Korean sentence at three different speech rate types. A total of 603 speech samples were analyzed by speech rate types (normal, slow, and fast), native languages (Korean, Chinese, Japanese), and learners' proficiency levels (beginner, intermediate, and advanced). We found that learners' L1 background plays a role in categorizing different speech rates in the L2 (Korean), and also that the leaners' proficiency correlates with the increase of speaking rate regardless of speech rate categories. More importantly, faster speech rate values found in the advanced level of learners do not necessarily match to the native speakers' speech rate categories. This means that learning speech rate categories can be more complex than we think of proficiency or fluency. That is, speech rate categories may not be acquired automatically during the course of second language learning, and implicit or explicit exposures to various rate types are necessary for second language learners to acquire a high level of communicative skills including speech rate variation. This paper discusses several pedagogical implications in terms of teaching pronunciation to second language learners.

  • This study attempted to analyse the collections of public libraries in terms of their subject distribution and currency. It was expected that the analysis would give public librarians some suggestions as to their collection development policy making. This study team selected 423 Korean public libraries across the country and scrutinized the collections by their classes of Korean Decimal Classification(KDC) and publishing years. The study results indicated that there was some subject disproportion in public library collections. Literature and social sciences were accounting for 54.8% of whole collections. Currency of collections of public libraries could be said relatively excellent. It was found that 64.9% of whole collections had been published after 2000.

  • This study suggested the expansion strategies of school library catalog considering educational context which should be used teaching and learning process. To achieve the purpose of research, this study derived educational context categories by comparing and analyzing teaching and learning related factors, information resource related factors. Also, this study analysed case system considering educational context. Based on the results, this study designed the catalog data elements as an element to be added to an existing school libraries system(DLS). The derived data element is end user(teacher, students), instructional situations (teaching method, instructional object, curriculum, evaluation type), resource type(feature, discipline, format), reading situation(contextual reading, literature topic), related materials(teacher representation, student representation).
