  • Due to the recent technical development and the enhancement of image resolution, Unmanned Airborne Vehicles(UAVs) have been used for various fields. A low altitude UAV system takes advantage of taking riverbed imagery at small rivers as well as land surface imagery on the ground. The bathymetric data are generated from the low altitude UAV system. The accuracy of the data is analyzed along water depths, comparing GPS observations and a DSM generated from UAV images. It is found that the depth accuracy of the geospatial data below 50 cm depth of water satisfies the regulation(${\pm}10cm$ spatial accuracy) of bathymetric surveying. Therefore this research shows that the geospatial data generated from UAV images at shallow regions of rivers can be used for bathymetric surveying.

  • A small unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV), which uses a propulsion system consisting of electric motor and battery, weighs less than 8 kg, capable of hand launch. Because it is easy to operate and able to transmit image information in real time, the use of small UAV has been increasing. However, very few analysis methods or analysis results on flight performance of the small UAV have been known so far. In this paper, the performance analysis methods of a small UAV, which is manufactured to study an electric powered UAV, are suggested and their results are achieved. Aerodynamic data of the vehicle are obtained by making use of gliding performance from actual flight test, and required thrust and required power by flight speed are predicted. In addition, the methods to predict range and endurance in case of using battery as power source are suggested and their results are achieved.

  • In this work, autonomous formation flight tests of multiple UAVs are experimentally studied. After a guidance and control system for a UAV is designed and tested, PID formation controller for follower UAV is tested using longitudinal and lateral distance feedback. It is shown that more stable and efficient formation guidance system is obtained by using position and attitude of the leader aircraft, which is exploited to calculate virtual waypoint for follower. In order to improve transient response during turn, part of roll command of the leader is added to the guidance command. Finally, autonomous formation flight test results of 3 UAVs are shown by using the best guidance algorithm suggested.

  • In this paper, based on the information about navigation system of UAV with PTZ camera and 3D topography, algorithm able to show us in real-time UAV's geographical shooting location and automatically calculate superficial measure of the shooting area is proposed. And the method that can automatically estimate whether UAV is allowed to shoot a specific area is shown. In case of an UAV's shooting attempt at the specific area, obtainability of valid image depends on not only UAV's location but also information of 3D topography. As a result of the study, Ground Control Center will have real-time information about whether UAV can shoot the needed topography. Therefore, accurate remote flight control will be possible in real-time. Furthermore, the algorithm and the method of estimating shooting probability can be applied to pre-flight simulation and set of flight route.

  • Automatic landing performance of UAV can be enhanced by adding Pseudolite(PL) to GPS. However, it is very hard to install and operate PL with confidence because GPS satellites are moving and the landing zone are usually changeable. The coverage and accuracy of combined GPS and PL can be estimated by using simulator and the correct information is very crucial to UAV operation. In this paper, design, implementation and evaluation of GPS/PL simulator for UAV landing are given. A very realistic coverage estimation is obtained using GIS data and ray launching method with considerations of the transmitter power level, altitude of UAV, number and location of PL. The expected accuracy is estimated using DOP and NSP computed using both GPS and PL. The performance of simulator is evaluated by comparing with the results of a real GPS receiver, and the certified simulator shows the required accuracy for UAV landing can be easily met by proper installation of at least 2 PLs.

  • Ignorance of battery pack life could bring unexpected UAV crashes and so the SOH estimation became a next important factor to the SOC estimation. In contrast to the EV applications, the small UAV could not carry heavy and complex BMS and so it is required to apply a simple, light, cheap, but powerful BMS to prevent any accident. In this paper, we show two SOH estimation methods, using internal resistance and using $SOC_I$ and $SOC_V$ with CF. Results show that the SOH becomes about 92% after 30 number of discharging cycles.

  • This paper presents a study on Fault History Management Equipment (FHME) of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS). UAS comprise of various types of electronic equipment for high reliability design for flight safety. Consequently, it is mandatory for each on-board equipment to have its own Built-In-Test (BIT) function, because rapid fault-detections for UAS are necessary. FHME is developed for the purposes of display, storage and management of such BIT results on ground. This paper describes the outline, development requirements, design and verification process of FHME.

  • Even though existing methods for orthophoto production in traditional photogrammetry are effective in large areas, they are inefficient when dealing with change detection of geometric features and image production for short time periods in small areas. In recent years, the UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle), equipped with various sensors, is rapidly developing and has been implemented in various ways throughout the geospatial information field. The data and imagery of specific areas can be quickly acquired by UAVs at low costs and with frequent updates. Furthermore, the redundancy of geospatial information data can be minimized in the UAV-based orthophoto generation. In this paper, the orthophoto and DEM (Digital Elevation Model) are generated using a standard low-end UAV in small sloped areas which have a rather low accuracy compared to flat areas. The RMSE of the check points is σH = ±0.12 m on a horizontal plane and σV = ±0.09 m on a vertical plane. As a result, the maximum and mean RMSE are in accordance with the working rule agreement for the airborne laser scanning surveying of the NGII (National Geographic Information Institute) on a 1/500 scale digital map. Through this study, we verify the possibilities of the orthophoto generation in small slope areas using general-purpose low specification UAV rather than a high cost surveying UAV.
