Difference of Starch Characteristics of Sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam) by Cultivated Regions (재배지역에 따른 고구마(Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam) 품종의 전분 특성 차이)

  • We investigated out the effect of cultivation region on the physicochemical characteristics of starch in six sweetpotato cultivars. The following sweetpotato cultivars were analyzed: Daeyumi, Shingeonmi, Jinhongmi, Shinyulmi, Yulmi, and Yeonhwangmi. Samples were cultivated in Muan, Iksan, Nonsan, Boryeong and Hamyang. The soil texture was found to be sandy loam in Muan, Iksan, and Boryeong, sandy clay loam in Nonsan, and loam in Hamyang. The starch content of the sweetpotato was higher in Muan than in Hamyang. The amylose content was 22.3-30.9%, and the highest amylose content was found in samples from Iksan. Rapid viscosity analysis showed that the samples from Hamyang had the lowest values of pasting temperature, while samples of the Daeyumi cultivar had the highest values. Thermal analysis with a differential scanning calorimeter showed that the Muan samples had the highest values of onset temperature, maximum peak temperature, and completion temperature, and the samples from Hamyang had the lowest values. There was no difference between the cultivation regions or the cultivar in the X-ray pattern of the starch or its appearance in scanning electron micrographs. Therefore, the results of this study confirm that cultivation region and cultivar play an important role in determining the quality of sweetpotato and the physicochemical characteristics of sweetpotato starch.

Studies of Short-Term Variability of Methane in the Moo-Ahn Observatory Site in Korea (무안지역 메탄가스의 단주기적 농도변화에 대한 평가)

  • In this study, the short-term variability of methane concentrations were investigated over 24-hr scale. The data obtained form the Moo-Ahn (MAN) station located in the western coastal area of Korea were analyzed from various respects to describe its distribution characteristics over short term scale. The MAN data were compared with those obtained from the two major background observatory sites: Point Barrow (Alaska) and Mauna Loa (Hawaii). The mean concentration of methane for the whole study period, when computed using the daily mean values, was found to be 1898${\pm}$85.3ppb (N=812). The mean values for the two comparable sites were observed to be 1832${\pm}$29.6ppb (N=823) for Point Barrow and 1745${\pm}$14.8ppb (N=818) for Mauna Loa. According to the analysis of frequency distribution. the mode value for the MAN area is found to be 1900ppb, but the mean concentration for Point Barrow and Mauna Loa are shown to have relatively low values of 1850 and 1750ppb, respectively. When examined over diurnal scale, the CH$_4$data for the MAN area exhibit a rather consistent trend; CH$_4$level is low during the daytime (after 6:00 A.M) and rises during the nighttime. The findings of the generally enhanced methane concentration in the MAN station may be explained form various respects. One of the most important reasons is that the MAN area is under the influence of various source processes relative to all the other stations under consideration. The short-term distribution patterns for the MAN station are hence characterized not only by the high methane concentration but also by the high oscillation in its CH$_4$concentration level.

Studies of Long-term Variability of Methane in the Moo-Ahn Observatory Site in Korea (무안지역을 중심으로 한 메탄의 장주기적 농도변화 특성 연구)

  • In this study, we analyzed the long-term distribution patterns of $CH_4$ determined from the Moo-Ahn (MAN) observatory in relation with those derived from the world major background monitoring sites. Comparison of the data were made using those data sets collected for the period between Aug. 1995 to Dec. 1991. The mean $CH_4$ concentration of MAN observatory was measured to be 1898${\pm}$85.3 ppb, recording the highest concentration of all the monitoring sites. When the concentration of $CH_4$ for different stations was compared over latitudinal scale, its concentration appeared to increase systematically as a function of latitude with an exception of MAN (and the other Korean monitoring site at Tae Ahn). Moreover, such phenomenon was more distinctive in Northern than Southern Hemisphere. According to the analysis of the monthly distribution patterns of $CH_4$ at MAN observatory, its concentration level began to increase from the months of February/March and peaked during August. In addition, when the level of oscillation in monthly concentrations (between the maximum and minimum values) was checked, differences were significant between MAN and other monitoring stations. If the rate of concentration change was checked using the data sets collected for this limited time period in terms of linear regression analysis, results for MAN showed the highest annual increasing rate of 16.5 ppb. It is hence suggested that the largest variability in the $CH_4$ distribution patterns at MAN observatory may be reflected by the high irregularity in its source/sink processes.

Short-term Variability of Carbon Dioxide within and across the Korean Peninsula: Case Study during 1995-1997 (이산화탄소의 단주기적 농도변화 특성)

  • This study was conducted to analyze the patterns associated with the short-term variability of CO$_2$ concentrations over 24-h scale within and across the Korean Peninsula. In the course of our study, we compared the data sets obtained from Moo-Ahn (MAN) station located in the far western coastal area of Korea with those determined from major background observatory stations around the world from the periods of Aug. 1995 to Dec. 1997. The mean CO$_2$ concentration of the MAN area for the whole study periods, when computed using the daily mean values, was found out to be 374.5${\pm}$6.6 ppm (N=884); seasonal mean values were found out to be 378${\pm}$5.2 (spring: N=181), 372${\pm}$10.2 (summer: N =210), 372${\pm}$7.2 (fall: N=243), and 376${\pm}$5.4 ppm (winter: N=206). When the data from MAN was compared with those of major background stations, the effects of both daily and seasonal components appear to vary distinctively across different stations. Those effects are expected to reflect the mixed effects of various factors which include: seasonal pollution patterns, weather conditions, vegetation, and so forth. Based upon this comparative analysis, we suspect that the MAN area is under the strong influence of anthropogenic source processes relative to all the other stations under consideration. If that is not the case, the existence of enhanced CO$_2$ level may be rather ubiquitous phenomena in Korea. More detailed inspection of CO$_2$ behavior from various respects is strongly desired in the future.

Distribution of Macrobenthos at the Mudflat in the Mouth of Muan Bay (무안만 초입 인근 갯벌의 대형저서동물 분포 특성)

  • Macrobenthos composes the dominant biomass at the mudflat and play an important role in the maintenance of the benthic environments. Organic matter in sedimentary environment affects habitat, feeding behaviors, and survival of benthos. In this study, the relationship between organic matter content in sediment and the distribution of macrobenthos was discussed at two margins (Mokpo and Aphae area) in the mouth of Muan bay. Sediment TOC was higher at Mokpo than at Aphae through the four seasons, and the pollution indicator organism Musculista senhousia was dominant in this area. The macrobenthos distribution was clearly divided into two areas correlated with sediment organic matter content in the mouth of Muan bay.

Corrosion of Calcareous Rocks and Ground Subsidence in the Muan Area, Jeonnam, Korea (전남 무안지역에 분포하는 석회질암의 용식작용과 지반침하)

  • This study examines the distribution of basement rocks in Gyochon-ri, Muan-eup, Muan-gun, Jeonnam where ground subsidence occurred in June 2005, and traces corrosion of limestone. Mica schist and rhyolite are distributed in the surface of the study area, but thick limestone layer with large and small caverns are distributed underground. A horizon of limestone with maximum width of 300 m and 4 km of length was found along the detour which is in the north of pound subsidence. Such identification of limestone presence would be very useful to predict potential ground subsidence. Limestone in this area was disturbed by fold and fault due to severe shearing deformation. Small caverns were frequently found in anticline part of folds formed in limestone layer. Schists with different thicknesses were intercalated in the limestone with shearing deformation and consist of sheet silicate minerals (chlorite and mica) and quartz. In sections of weathered specimen, it is shown that biotite of schist part was altered into chlorite and corrosion of calcite around the schist followed. This suggest that ground water permeated between intercalated sheet silicate minerals and corrosion of limestone began. And small caverns were generated where active corrosion occurred. This study suggests that because of many reasons (for instance, reclamation of the Bulmu reservior and excess pumping), cavern water level was lowered and cave sediments were removed, and it caused ground subsidence to occur.

A Study on the Types and Determinants of Young Farmers: Focusing on Young Farmers in Muan-gun, Jeollanam-do (청년농업인 유형화 및 결정요인 분석: 전남 무안군 청년농업인 중심으로)

  • Based on Muan-gun, Jeollanam-do, this study explores how to mitigate the disappearance of rual areas. The study surveyed 95 young farmers in Muan-gun to assess their farming practices and the challenges they face. We further employ factor analysis and cluster analysis classify young farmers in Muan-gun, facilitating the identification of tailored policies or initiatives aimed at fostering and supporting young farmers. The results are summarized as follows. First, Muan County does not have any ordinances or original projects specifically designed to support young farmers. Second, the succession rate of farmland among young farmers in Muan County is 41.1%, which is comparable to the national rate of 43.7%. This indicates that approximately 40% of young farmers in Korea have inherited farmland, a critical foundation for agricultural activities. Third, despite accumulating farming experience, young farmers have not seen any improvement in local living conditions, and rather their difficulties have intensified. Fourth, this study conducted a factor analysis using 21 variables, resulting in the selection of seven common factors for cluster analysis. Consequently, young farmers in Muan County were categorized into three groups. The multinomial logit analysis revealed that the typology of young farmers is influenced by indicators such as cultivated area, farming experience, demand for smart farms, farm income, and farming type (rice cultivation or other). Therefore, to attract young farmers and prevent the decline of rural areas, policy efforts should focus on minimizing entry barriers to farming infrastructure, such as access to farmland, and improving local settlement conditions.

Comparative analysis of the evapotranspiration data in Muan Flux tower (무안 증발산량 관측소 운영 결과 비교 분석)

  • 2015년 국토교통부(영산강홍수통제소)에서는 물 순환 과정의 규명에 이용되는 증발산량 자료의 제공을 목적으로 무안지역에 플럭스 타워를 설치하여 운영하고 있다. 무안 플럭스 타워는 에디공분산 방법을 이용하여 증발산량 자료를 관측하는 방식으로, 본 연구에서는 무안 관측소에서 생산된 자료의 정상성 검토를 위하여 2015년과 2016년 운영 결과를 비교 분석하였다. 무안관측소의 2015년도 연 증발산량은 615.8mm(연 강수량 대비 56.0%)로 나타났으며, 2016년도 연 증발산량은 721.5mm(연 강수량 대비 49.5%)로 나타났다. 연 증발산량은 전년대비 약 100mm 증가하는 양상을 보였으며, 강수량 대비 비율은 6.5% 감소하는 것으로 분석되었다. 2015년 대비 2016년 무강우일수는 6일 증가 하였으나, 실제 순복사에너지는 $18,320w/m^2$ 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. 실제 이 차이는 2개년 평균치의 약 2% 내외 수준으로 예년대비 순복사에너지는 거의 비슷한 것으로 분석되었다. 복합적 요인에 의해 정량적 크기가 결정되는 증발산량의 특성상 추가적인 분석이 필요하나, 2016년의 경우 전년대비 증가한 강우의 영향이 지배적이였던 것으로 검토되었다(2015강수량 : 1,099mm, 2016강수량 : 1,457mm). 월별 증발산량 비교 분석결과 정량적인 차이는 존재했으나 전년과 마찬가지로 1월부터 증발산량이 증가하여 8월에 최대 증발산량을 보인 후 감소하는 형태를 나타냈으며, 5월과 6월이 증발산량이 역전되는 양상도 동일하게 나타났다. 이는 남부지역 모내기 시기인 5월경 관개용수(Irrigation water) 공급에 따른 유입원의 증가와 함께 5월 대비 6월(장마철) 흐린날(Cloudy condition) 증가에 따른 상대적인 순복사에너지(5월: 약20만$w/m^2$, 6월: 약17만$w/m^2$)의 감소가 주 원인이였던 것으로 검토되었다. 이를 통해 볼 때 무안 증발산량 자료는 추가적인 경년변화 연구가 필요하겠으나, 국가통계자료로써 유의미한 자료로 판단되며, 향후 증발산량에 대한 지속적인 연구 및 관측망의 확대를 통해 국가 이수관련 정책수립에 유용한 자료로 이용 될 수 있을것으로 판단된다.
