  • Numerical analysis of high Mach number flow over a blunt-body poses many difficulties and various numerical schemes have been suggested to overcome the problems. However, the new schemes were used in the limited fields of applications because of the lack of field experience compared to more than 20 years old numerical schemes and the intricacies of modifying the existing code for the special application. In this study, some tips to overcome the numerical difficulties in solving the 3D high-Mach number flows by using Roe's scheme, the most widely used for the past 25 years and adopted in many commercial codes, were examined without a correction of the algorithm or a modification of the CFD code. The well-known carbuncle phenomena of Riemann solvers could be remedied even for an extremely high Mach number by applying the entropy fixing function and a unphysical solution could be overcome by applying a simply modified initial condition regardless of the entropy fixing and grid configuration.

  • A finite-difference method based on conservative supra characteristic method(CSCM) type upwind flux difference splitting has been studied on the bluntness effect on the wall heat transfer rate and wall pressure over blunt-body. The results show that the stagnation heating varies inversely with the square root of the nose radius.

  • Investigated In this paper is the shock reflection from a blunt body, In particular, a circular cylinder of 20 mm diameter, for the weak shock impinging in the range 1<$M_s$ <2. Pressure and shock speed are measured for various shock strengths. Double-pulse holographic interferograms are taken to study the unsteady flow field at $M_s=1.34$. These experimental results are, in overall, well compared with the unstructured adaptive finite volume computation of the Euler equations performed in this study. Correlation of incident and reflected shocks and shock-shock locus obtained by experiment, computation, and theory are presented in parallel.

  • The counter jet flow which is injected against the free stream at stagnation region of blunt body for improvement of aerodynamic performance has been studied by using upwind Navier-Stokes method. The variations of drag force and upwind forward penetration depth due to changes in the stagnation thermodynamic properties of counter jet flow such as total pressure, Mach number, and total temperature have been studied. The results show that the changes in the stagnation pressure and Mach number have large effects on the wall pressure and drag force, but the total temperature does not affect the wall pressure and drag force.

  • A robust Navier-Stokes code has been developed to efficiently predict hypersonic flows in chemical nonequilibrium. The HLLE+ flux discretization scheme is used to improve accuracy and robustness of hypersonic flow analysis. An efficient LU approximate factorization method is also used to solve the flow equations and species continuity equations in fully coupled fashion to implicitly treat stiff source terms of chemical reactions. The HLLE+ scheme shows lower grid dependency for the wall heating rates than other schemes. The developed code has been used to compute chemical nonequilibrium air flow through expanding hypersonic nozzle and past two and three dimensional blunt-nosed bodies. The results are in good agreement with existing numerical and experimental results.

  • A finite-difference method based on conservative supra characteristic method type upwind flux difference splitting has been developed to study the nonequilibrium chemically reacting inviscid flow. For nonequilibrium air, NS-1 species equations were strongly coupled with flowfield equations through convection and species production terms. Inviscid nonequilibrium chemically reacting air mixture flows over Blunt-body were solved to demonstrate the capability of the current method. At low altitude flight conditions the nonequilibrium air models predicted almost the same temperature, density and pressure behind the shock as equilibrium flow: however, at high altitudes they showed substantial differences due to nonequilibrium chemistry effect. The new nonequilibrium chemically reacting upwind flux difference splitting mettled can be extended to viscous flow and multi-dimensional flow conditions.
