  • Introduction : The purpose of this article was to introduce the theory of flow experience to occupational therapy for various therapeutic interventions to improve the subject's physical function, activity, and participation. Review : To understand the flow experience in occupational therapy, this study summarized the concept and characteristics of the flow experience, the stages and the scientific characteristics of the brain, measurement methods, and related studies through a review of domestic and foreign literature. In occupational therapy, the subject's flow experience can be defined as 'a psychological state in which the subject is completely flow in the therapeutic activity he is doing while forgetting the passage of time'. Subjects perceived a clear goal for the task and experienced engagement when the challenge was balanced with a high level of skill. In a previous study, positive changes in attention and concentration, executive function, upper extremity function, and performance of daily living activities were confirmed in subjects who encountered the flow experience. Conclusion : If the subject's flow experience in various therapeutic interventions in domestic occupational therapy is considered, the treatment effects will be further promoted.

  • This study investigates the causal relationships among flow experience, self-directed learning readiness, internet addiction and academic achievement in web-based computer education. The gender differences in path models were also examined. The results indicated that, self-directed learning readiness has positive and direct influence on flow experience and academic achievement. And self-directed learning readiness has a negative and direct influence on internet addiction. For female students, academic achievement was positively and directly influenced by flow experience and indirectly by self-directed learning readiness. However, the mediating effect of flow experience and indirect effect of self-directed learning readiness were not significant for male students.

  • In proposing the concept of flow which focuses on experiencing the sites visited by Korean wave tourists as induced by drama or movies, this paper investigated role of involvement variables for Korean wave tourists in influencing flow construct of film sites. The involvement of Korean wave was found to operate as a mechanism by which challenge, skills, focused attention on site might be more organized or more actively experienced. This recognizes that there is clearly a need for making the FIT sites exposed much by any mix of various media. This study showed that challenges and skills influence enjoyment as output factor of flow film site visitors are assumed to participate the roles of film characters, experiencing the places and atmosphere. The degree of visitors' reflections in the film optimizes awareness of flow experiences on the site. Therefore, it is necessary to provide more detailed experiential program on the film sites with the wide variety of flow-related contents in the film.

  • The aim of this study was to identify the type of occupational balance of college students and analyze the differences between positive or negative emotions according to degree of flow. The Experience Sampling Methods (ESM) were conducted for 12 college students using smart phones. As a result, in activities of daily living group, apathy showed the highest percentage (34%) and in over work group, flow showed the highest percentage (41%). In occupational balance group, frequency of labor and leisure activities was high but boredom was experience a lot in leisure activities. When the students experienced flow in main activities, mean score of positive emotions showed the highest value. Through this study, we identified the differences of flow experience in occupational performance based on type of occupational balance and confirmed improvement of positive emotions in activities experienced flow.

We also investigated effect of participants' pre-experience of participating race on satisfaction, immersion and motive for reparticipation. Sense of freedom and social interaction appeared to affect satisfaction of participants significantly, but the sense of control did not. Sense of freedom had effect on immersion, whereas sense of control and social interaction had no effect on immersion. Significant relationship between motive for reparticiaption and participants' satisfaction and immersion was observed. Interaction effect between participant's satisfaction and was significant. Immersion mediates relation between reparticiaption and participants' satisfaction, participants experienced yahct race before showed more effect of satisfaction on motive for reparticiaption than participants with no race experience, who showed no significant effect of satisfaction on motive for reparticiaption. Immersion have effect on motive for reparicipation in both groups, but effect size was greater in the group with race experience. Thus, satisfaction and immersion of participants who have pre-experience of participating race showed greater effect on reparticipation than who haven't.

  • This study investigated the impacts of the experience attributes of JJALBANG broadcast images on satisfaction with 221 viewers in their 20s and analyzed the mediation effect of flow. The results are: First, their experience attributes affected flow, not directly affecting satisfaction while flow directly affected satisfaction. Second, securing flow was an important predictor for connecting experience attributes to satisfaction through the effect resolution. Flow alone can predict satisfaction, so its impact on experience is very important. Visual attribute had the greatest influence on flow and satisfaction, followed by situation, information, and interaction, which affected satisfaction through flow. This study found the importance of full mediation effect of flow and got implications for effectively providing experience and flow in strategies for viewing JJALBANG.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the differences in aesthetic experience according to the level of audience participation. Flow experience and aesthetic distance were utilized as proxies for aesthetic experience. A total of 70 undergraduates participated in the experiments of this study. In terms of flow experience, active participation groups were found to have relatively greater flow experiences compared to contemplation groups and passive participation groups. However, there was no difference in flow experience between the contemplation groups and the passive participation groups. In light of aesthetic distance, which means psychological distance, people in active participation groups were found to have a closer psychological distance from artwork than those in contemplation groups and passive participation groups. Also, those who belonged to the passive participation group showed a closer psychological distance than the contemplation group. The results of this study provide artists and art organizations with implications for enhancing audience attraction as well as the completeness of artwork.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate various types of 'flow' that can be observed in the daily lives of science-gifted students, and the correlation between 'flow' and creativity. For two months, we have gathered data on 'flow' in the main activities of science-gifted students through a qualitative application of the Experience Sampling Method (ESM). We then use correlation analysis to determine whether there have been correlations between 'flow' and creativity. Among the four channels, activities involving 'flow' have been the most common (40.4%) in the daily lives of the students. The types of tasks done by the students are, in descending order of frequency, productive activities, social activities, leisure activities, and basic activities. The students have shown the least interest in tasks that do not require specific skills or pose significant challenges; thus the least interest show in basic activities and the most interest has been shown in productive activities. 'Flow' and creativity are significantly correlated at the level of 0.01, which means that the more the students experience 'flow,' the more they express creativity. Based on the results above, we have found that there is a need for the development of science programs or environments, including productivity while at the same time, to reduce uneasiness and patience raising activities, where students can experience more 'flow' in daily life.
