  • This stud y was conducted to investigate the bonding strength of plywood bonded with fatty acid-glycerol-pMDI adhesives with equivalent ratios of 1:1:2, 1:1:3, 1:1:4, 1:1:5, and 1:1:6. With veneer moisture contents of 0%, 3%, 5%, 8% and 15%, the bonding strengths exceeded the requirement of Korean plywood standard of $7.0kgf/cm^2$ with values of $13.7kgf/cm^2$, $11.6kgf/cm^2$, $11.2kgf/cm^2$, $9.8kgf/cm^2$, and $7.4kgf/cm^2$, respectively at fatty acid-glycerol-pMDI ratio of 1:1:2. With veneer moisture content of 30%, the bonding strengths exceeded th e requirement of Korean plywood standard of $7.0kgf/cm^2$, when fatty acid-glycerol-pMDI ratios were 1:6. Finally for satisfying the Korean plywood standard, the ratio of MDI in fatty acid-glycerol-pMDI should be increased with increasing of veneer moisture content.

  • In our study, the potential of okara as an ingredient of new bio-based adhesives was investigated for the production of fancy-veneered flooring boards. Okara was hydrolyzed by 1% sulfuric acid solution (AC) and 1% sodium hydroxide solution (AK). Phenol formaldehyde (PF) prepolymers were prepared as a cross-linker of okara hydrolyzates. Then, okara-based adhesive resins were formulated with 35% AC, 35% AK and 30% PF prepolymer on solid content basis. The adhesive resins were applied on high-density fiberboards (HDF) with the spread rate of $300g/m^2$. After that, oak fancy veneers are covered on the HDF, and then pressed with the pressure of $7kg/m^2$ at $120^{\circ}C$. The experimental variables were three mole ratios of formaldehyde to phenol (1.8, 2.1, 2.4), three assembly time (0, 10, 20 min), and two press time (90 sec, 120 sec), respectively. The fancy-veneered high-density fiberboards were tested by dry tensile strength, glueline failure by wetting and formaldehyde emission. Tensile strength of the boards exceeded the requirement of KS standard. The formaldehyde emissions were approached at the E0 level specified in KS standard. Based on these results, okara can be used as an ingredient of environmentally friendly adhesive resin systems for the production of flooring boards.

  • This study has been carried out to make a comparative study for the adhesive control methods specifically developed for application to formaldehyde. The method for formaldehyde determination used in this report is the improved chromo tropic acid determination. The results are summarized as follows: 1. The soaking treatment in aqueous solution of urea wok the most scavenging effect on the formaldehyde release from a plywood sample glued with a urea formaldehyde adhesive, and other removal treatment such as resorcinol, albumine-, and hardener-treatment gave significant reduction too. 2. In glue shear strength of dry test, 2% of resorcinol treatment and soaking treatment showed the highest strength and all the other treatment met the standard, but in hot water soaking test, 2% of resorcinol treatment gave the best results, on the other hand, adding the hardener showed the lowest strength and failed in meeting the standard. 3. Air dried moisture content of all treated plywood met the standard which calls for 13% or bellow. 4. In this comparative study, we can make a strong combination each other or go into the details of one treatment for the best result through the more study.

  • Recently, demands for the structural uses with domestic Japanese larch and SPF(spruce-pine-fir) lumber from North America have been increased. Shear properties of nailed joints that are the most simple and optimum fastening method in wooden constructions, especially in light frame construction. For the nailed joints, in North America and Japan, a number of basic and practical studies have been performed. The shear behaviors for the double nailed joint with variations of member and its direction, were examined. Shear properties of the shear specimens with SPF stud showed more remarkable variation than larch glulam and larch stud. Furthermore, the relationships between slip modulus and strength are not coincided in every case.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the appearance and surface gluing characteristics of laminated boards overlaied with teak sliced veneer, printing paper, wall paper, cotton cloth, and wool cloth, The overlaying sheets were glued on the laminated boards with polyvinyl acetate emulsion adhesives and the species for laminated boards was red pine. The obtained results are summarized as follows; in case of the teak sliced veneer overlaied boards, the appearance quality was very good and showed the first grade of KS standard. but the delamination rate was 44.0% and 895% for cold water or warm water dipping treatments, respectively, so the wet gluing properties were very bed. In the case of the paper or cloth overlaied boards, the appearance quality was same good and showed the first grade of KS standard, but their delamination rate was 10~20% and 39.3~49.0 for cold water or warm water dipping treatments, respectively, so the wet gluing properties were bed, relatively better than sliced veneer overlaied boards. The present work showed that appearance of laminated boards overlaid with several sheets appeared quite positive in terms of secondary gluing qualities of laminated boards, suggesting that sliced veneer, paper, and cloth would be appropriate for the overlaying materials of laminated boards.

  • This paper presents the results of air-drying processes and mositure content (MC) distribution of red pine (P. densiflora) and Japanese larch (L. leptolepis) square timber with 14 cm and 16.5 cm of face size, respectively. The air-drying rates of square timber were comparatively high during the first 8 weeks, after that gradually decreased. The time to air dry square timber from initial MC to specified MC of 18 percent required about 26 weeks for 14.0 cm and 32 weeks for 16.5 cm square of red pine, and 32 weeks for 14.0 cm and 48 weeks for 16.5 cm square of Japanese larch. The longitudinal- and transverse MC distribution of these air-dried squares showed slight moisture gradient. The effect of face size on moisture gradient of Japanese larch square was more pronounced comparing with red pine one.

  • The study was carried out to investigate the quality characteristics of pellets manufactured with adding soybean oil, waste soybean oil, ozonized soybean oil and ozonized waste soybean oil to Larix kaemferi Carr sawdust. The characteristics of pellet included moisture contents, heating value, ash contents, apparent densities, durabilities, absorption ratio and elementary analysis. Moisture contents were shown 7.66~9.48% which satisfied the first grade (less than 10%) of quality standard of wood pellets announced by Korea Forest Research Institute. The heating value of the manufactured wood pellets in this study exceeded the first grade of quality standard (more than 4,300 kcal/kg) and it appeared that the pellets manufactured with adding oils and ozonized oils had more heating value than the control pellets. Ash contents 0.34~0.42% also passed the first grade (less than 0.7%) of quality standard and apparent densities were adequate for the first grade (640 kg/$m^3$) on the quality standard. Durabilities of the pellets manufactured with adding soybean oil and ozonized waste soybean oil were shown over the first grade (97.5 kg/$m^3$) of quality standard. In the general results of durabilities, the pellets manufactured with additives had better values than the control pellets. After 24 hours absorption ratio experiment, absorption ratio of pellets manufactured with additives also appeared much lower moisture absorption than the control pellets and they still had the same results after 5days absorption ratio experiment. Elementary analysis of the sulfur content was satisfied the first grade (less than 0.05%) of quality standard of wood pellets and the nitrogen content was also adequate for the first grade (less than 0.3%) of quality standard of wood pellets.

• This study was conducted to develop a simulation model for estimating the amount of such products as round wood, dimension lumber and the residual wood biomass produced by processing the individual trees of Larix kaempferi. In the model, the stem volume is assessed using the taper equations of the species to estimate the stem forms. Then, the model simulates the conversion processes of logs to round wood or lumber and assesses the maximum amount of the wood products by the lumber dimensions or round wood size. Also the model provides information on the amount of residuals for kerf and slabs produced on the conversion processes for sawn timber or round wood. According to the results of an application of the model to a L. kaempferi process, the trees greater than 12 cm of DBH can be converted to logs for lumber or round wood production. For the trees, of which DBH is available for log conversion, the maximum amount of final products by dimensions were analyzed. In this analysis, production of the bigger dimension lumber was assumed to be preferred to that of the smaller or round wood. This model can be used for assesment of forest economic value through estimation of merchantable volume for the trees, and assessment of mill residues which has the potential to provide significant amount of feedstock for bioenergy production as well.
