In the current design codes for anti-freezing layer, the thickness of anti-freezing layer is calculated by freezing depth against the temperature condition. Therefore, they have a tendency of over-design and uniform thickness without the considerations of thermal stability, bearing capacity and frost susceptibility of materials. So, it is essential for studying the appropriateness and bearing capacity of road foundation materials as well as their seasonal and mechanical properties to take an appropriate and reasonable design of the road structure system. In this paper, the freezing and bearing capacity characteristics of typical road foundation materials were evaluated in the large scale laboratory test. LFWD (light falling weight deflectometer) was used to determine the change of elastic modulus ($E_{LFWD}$) caused by to the frost heave and thaw. Furthermore, the influence of crushed natural aggregate on the freezing of the subgrade soil was studied to verify the function and effectiveness of the anti-freezing layer.

Opening the tip of a PHC pile, under a constant driving energy, can result in an increment of penetration depth due to the decrement of driving resistance. Therefore, the bearing capacity of an open-ended PHC pile may become larger than that of a closed-ended PHC pile by virtue of the increased embedded length. However, two main problems can be caused by opening the end of PHC pile. First problem is the variation of bearing capacity by opening the pile tip, and the second one is whether the tip of an open-ended PHC pile will be failured by a high pressure developed by the soil plug. In this study, model pile tests in calibration chamber were performed to investigate the practicability of open-ended PHC pile in view of both the pile bearing capacity and the possible failure of the pile tip. According to the test results, the total bearing capacity of open-ended piles approaches the total bearing capacity of closed-ended piles with the increase of the penetration depth. The failure of pile tip could be occurred in the region of 0.8~1.1 times as the inside diameter from the pile tip.
The aim of this study is to analyze the mechanical characteristics and settlement feature of the composite ground with structural form changes. The laboratory model test is a soil tanker to be contained with clay and grid form improved soil, which is conducted in total 9 case with the uniaxial compressive strength of improved soil and replacement ratio of improved soil. The numerical analysis for variation of stress distribution ratio with depth was performed in the same conditions which are the laboratory model test. As a result, stress distribution ratios in mid and high replacement ratio are increasing and settlement is decreasing, except low replacement ratio. This study is presented for form effect ratio and settlement reduction factor with change of structure form, which is able to be helpful in further research and reference for change of structural forms at composite ground.
In this study, the stability of group piles installed in deep sea to the seaquake was studied by performing the calibration chamber model tests for open-ended pipe piles, grouted piles under soil plug and close-ended piles installed in the simulated deep sea. For each case (a single pile, 2-pile and 4-pile groups), series of seaquake tests were performed. While, during the simulated seaquake, the compressive capacity of the single open-ended pile depended on pile penetration depth(=7m), were found to be stable. But, a single grouted pile with penetration depth of 13m kept "mobility" state, the one with penetration depth of 20m was stable and grouted pile groups with penetration depth of 7m were stable regardless of pile penetration depth. By grouting soil plug of open-ended piles and soil under the pile toe of open-ended pipe piles installed in the deep sea, failure of soil plugging was prevented. Thus, close-ended piles were more stable than open-ended pile against the seaquake motionake motion.
In this study, an interpretation method is proposed to evaluate the stress conditions, including individual excess pore pressure components ($\Delta{u}_{oct}$/ and $\Delta{u}_{shear}$), of normally consolidated clay elements adjacent to the cone face. It is assumed that the stress path of triaxial compression is representative f3r that of the soil element and the soil is elastic-perfectly plastic material. The proposed method is applied to the results of miniature piezocone tests conducted at Louisiana State University calibration chamber system. Based on the results of interpretation, it was found that the ratio of $\Delta{u}_{oct}$/ $\Delta{u}$and $\Delta{u}_{shear}$/$\Delta{u}$ estimated by the proposed method is affected only by the pore pressure parameter. The proposed method gives consistent and reliable values of $\Delta{u}_{oct}$/ $\Delta{u}$and $\Delta{u}_{shear}$/$\Delta{u}$ compared with early works, whereas those obtained by other solutions are significantly dependent on the accuracy in estimating soil properties such as undrained shear strength and rigidity index.
Underground flexible pipes for electric cables are subject to external loads and surrounding soil pressure. Particularly, strain of flexible pipes is of great concern in terms of safety and maintenance for electric cables. In this paper, stress and strain of flexible pipes with various installation depth are compared using traditional formula, FEM analysis, model soil box test and field test. from the findings of various analyses, considering the strain criteria-maximum 3.5%, it is suggested that flexible pipes can be buried at the depth of 80cm without additional soil improvement.
In this study, the variation in excess pore pressure during dissipation is estimated by using successive cavity expansion theory and finite difference technique based on axisymmetric uncoupled linear consolidation theory with separate consideration of magnitude and initial distribution $\Delta{u}_{oct}$induced by changes of octahedral normal stress, and $\Delta{u}_{shear}$ induced by changes of octahedral shear stress. The coefficient of consolidation is also estimated by trial and error procedure until the predicted dissipation curve matches the measured curve at a typical degree of dissipation. The proposed method is applied to the results of miniature piezocone tests at Louisiana State University calibration chamber system. Based on the results of interpretation and the comparison with experimental measurements and those from other solutions, the prediction dissipation curves show a good match with those measured during dissipation tests and the values of coefficient of consolidation estimated by proposed method are more close to the range of laboratory measurements than those of other theories.

In recent, in case that the underpass is constructed by trenchless method, its stability increases by reinforcing steel pipe with re-bar and mortar after propulsion into the ground to form pipe-roof. Therefore, it can be predicted that the integrated pipe-roof decreases the stress acting on the underpass by sharing load. In this study, to analyze the effect of integrated pipe-roof and behavior of stress around underpass, experimental tests for the rectangular and arch cross section of the underpass are performed using soil chamber. As a result, stress and strain acting on the underpass decrease due to sharing load by integrated pipe-roof. This phenomenon is more pronounced by increasing the stiffness of pipe-roof. Furthermore it can be expected that cross-section of underpass can be economically designed.
Sand compaction pile (SCP) is one of the ground improvement techniques which are being used for not only accelerating consolidation but also increasing bearing capacity of loose sands or soft clay grounds. In this study, laboratory model tests and 3-D finite element analyses were performed to investigate the interaction between sand compaction piles and surrounding soft soils. Based on the results obtained, as the area replacement ratio increases, the stress concentration ratio increases at the pile point, the settlement decreases, and the relative displacement between column and soil also decreases. It is also found that numerical study is illustrated by good comparison with model test results, and the numerical analysis revealed slip effects which could not be specifically identified in the model tests.
Bulking change between sediments and dredged soils occurs when dredged soils are fully disturbed by dredging process and settled down to stabilized conditions in the basin. Bulking of dredged soils are affected by chemical injection, coagulant and flocculant, to speed up settling process of the suspended solids. In this paper, bulking changes of dredged soils are investigated by experimental works regarding injection effects of the coagulant and flocculant. Dredged sediments were sampled in the lagoon located at the East Coast, and the bulking change of dredged soils is quantitatively analysed by changing the clay content and the amount of the coagulant and flocculant. The optimal amounts of the coagulant and flocculant are determined based on minimal bulking change due to coagulant and flocculant injection. From the experimental results, the bulking of dredged soils increased 1.69 times on the average and the bulking change rate slightly increased as clay content increasea due to injection of the coagulant and flocculant.
