  • This study is attempted to realize an improved computation performance by combining the MPI (Message Passing Interface) Technique, a standard model of the parallel programming in the distributed memory environment, with the DHM(Diffusion Hydrodynamic Model), a inundation analysis model. With parallelizing inundation model, it compared with the existing calculation method about the results of applications to complicate and required long computing time problems. In addition, it attempted to prove the capability to estimate inundation extent, depth and speed-up computing time due to the flooding in protected lowlands and to validate the applicability of the parallel model to the actual flooding analysis by simulating based on various inundation scenarios. To verify the model developed in this study, it was applied to a hypothetical two-dimensional protected land and a real flooding case, and then actually verified the applicability of this model. As a result of this application, this model shows that the improvement effectiveness of calculation time is better up to the maximum of about 41% to 48% in using multi cores than a single core based on the same accuracy. The flood analysis model using the parallel technique in this study can be used for calculating flooding water depth, flooding areas, propagation speed of flooding waves, etc. with a shorter runtime with applying multi cores, and is expected to be actually used for promptly predicting real time flood forecasting and for drawing flood risk maps etc.

  • In electronic warfare, the pulse amplitude, one of information of a pulse signal emitted by an enemy, is used for estimating distance from the source and for deinterleaving mixed source signals. An estimate of pulse amplitude is conventionally determined as the maximum magnitude of a Fourier transformed signal within its pulse width which is estimated pre-step in an electronic warfare receiver. However, when frequency modulated signals are received, it is difficult to estimate their pulse amplitudes with this conventional method because the energy of signals is dispersed in frequency domain. In order to overcome this limitation, this paper proposes an enhanced pulse amplitude estimation method which calculates the average power of the received pulse signal in time domain and removes the noise power of the receiver. Simulation results show that even in case the frequency modulated signal is received, the proposed method has the same performance as estimating the pulse amplitude when unmodulated signal is received. In addition, the proposed method is shown to be more robust to an estimation error of pulse width, which affects the estimation performance of pulse amplitude, than the conventional method.

  • A sell-designed rate control strategy can improve overall picture quality for video transmission over a constant bit rate channel and the rate control method is not a normative part of MPEG-video standard, the performance of MPEG video codec can be quite different depends on how to implement the rate control scheme. The rate control scheme proposed in MPEG show good results when scene changes is not occurred. But it has weakness that it does not properly handle scene-changed pictures. Therefore picture quality after scene change is deteriorated, and possibility of overflow occurrence becomes high. In this paper, a new method for detection of scene change occurrence using local variance and a new determination scheme for adaptive quantization parameter, mqunt, which can consider local characteristic of an image by using previously computed the local variance from the scene change detection part are proposed. IN addition, and adaptive rate control scheme which can handles scene changed picture very efficiently by scene-changed picture is proposed. Computer simulations are performed to verify the performance of the proposed algorithm. The suggested detection algorithm precisely detected scene change. And the proposed rate control scheme shows better rate control performance as compared with that of the conventional MPEG scheme.

  • Applying the limit state design method to geotechnical structures, accuracy and reliability of its design are mainly affected by parameters for geotechnical site characteristics, such as unit weight, Poisson's ratio, deformation modulus, cohesion and frictional angle. When the structures are located in weathered ground, especially, cohesion and frictional angle of ground are closely related with decision of parameters for structures' load and ground's resistance. Therefore, the accurate determination of these parameters, which are commonly obtained from field measurement, such as borehole shear test, are essential for optimum design of geotechnical structures. The 38 case studies, in this study, have been analyzed for understanding the importance of these parameters in designing the ground structures. From these results, importance of field measurement was also ascertained. With these evaluations, an apparatus for determining the strength characteristics, which are fundamental in limit state design (LSD) method, have been newly developed. This apparatus has an improved function as following the ASTM suggestion. Through the field application of this apparatus, the strong point of minimizing the possibility of error occurrence during the measurement has been verified and authors summarized that the essential parameters for LSD can be qualitatively obtained by this apparatus for determination of strength characteristics of weathered ground.

  • This paper proposes a method of using depth information to detect the hand region in real-time based on the cascade method. In order to ensure stable and speedy detection of the hand region even under conditions of lighting changes in the test environment, this study uses only features based on depth information, and proposes a method of detecting the hand region by means of a classifier that uses boosting and cascading methods. First, in order to extract features using only depth information, we calculate the difference between the depth value at the center of the input image and the average of depth value within the segmented block, and to ensure that hand regions of all sizes will be detected, we use the central depth value and the second order linear model to predict the size of the hand region. The cascade method is applied to implement training and recognition by extracting features from the hand region. The classifier proposed in this paper maintains accuracy and enhances speed by composing each stage into a single weak classifier and obtaining the threshold value that satisfies the detection rate while exhibiting the lowest error rate to perform over-fitting training. The trained classifier is used to classify the hand region, and detects the final hand region in the final merger stage. Lastly, to verify performance, we perform quantitative and qualitative comparative analyses with various conventional AdaBoost algorithms to confirm the efficiency of the hand region detection algorithm proposed in this paper.

  • An algorithm was developed to estimate stability indices (SI) over the Korean peninsula using Terra Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) infrared brightness temperatures (TBs). The SI is defined as the stability of the atmosphere in the hydrostatic equilibrium with respect to the vertical displacements and is used as an index for the potential severe storm development. Using atmosphere temperature and moisture profiles from Regional Data Assimilation and Prediction System (RDAPS) as initial guess data for a nonlinear physical relaxation method, K index (KI), KO Index (KO), lifted index (LI), and maximum buoyancy (MB) were estimated. A fast radiative transfer model, RTTOV-7, is utilized for reducing the computational burden related to the physical relaxation method. The estimated TBs from the radiative transfer simulation are in good agreement with observed MODIS TBs. To test usefulness for the short-term forecast of severe storms, the algorithm is applied to the rapidly developed convective storms. Compared with the SIs from the RDAPS forecasts and NASA products, the MODIS SI obtained in this research predicts the instability better over the pre-convection areas. Thus, it is expected that the nowcasting and short-term forecast can be improved by utilizing the algorithms developed in this study.

  • Predicting term deposit subscriptions is one of representative financial marketing in banks, and banks can build a prediction model using various customer information. In order to improve the classification accuracy for term deposit subscriptions, many studies have been conducted based on machine learning techniques. However, even if these models can achieve satisfactory performance, utilizing them is not an easy task in the industry when their decision-making process is not adequately explained. To address this issue, this paper proposes an explainable scheme for term deposit subscription forecasting. For this, we first construct several classification models using decision tree-based ensemble learning methods, which yield excellent performance in tabular data, such as random forest, gradient boosting machine (GBM), extreme gradient boosting (XGB), and light gradient boosting machine (LightGBM). We then analyze their classification performance in depth through 10-fold cross-validation. After that, we provide the rationale for interpreting the influence of customer information and the decision-making process by applying Shapley additive explanation (SHAP), an explainable artificial intelligence technique, to the best classification model. To verify the practicality and validity of our scheme, experiments were conducted with the bank marketing dataset provided by Kaggle; we applied the SHAP to the GBM and LightGBM models, respectively, according to different dataset configurations and then performed their analysis and visualization for explainable term deposit subscriptions.

  • This study confirmed the applicability to the field of geotechnical engineering for relatively complicated space and many target design variables in back analysis. The Sharan's equation and the Blum's method were used for the tunnel field and the retaining wall as a model for the multi-variate problem of geotechnical engineering. Optimization methods are generally divided into a deterministic method and a stochastic method. In this study, Simulated Annealing Method (SA) was selected as a deterministic method and Differential Evolution Algorithm (DEA) and Particle Swarm Optimization Method (PSO) were selected as stochastic methods. The three selected optimization methods were compared by applying a multi-variate model. The problem of deterministic method has been confirmed in the multi-variate back analysis of geotechnical engineering, and the superiority of DEA can be confirmed. DEA showed an average error rate of 3.12% for Sharan's solution and 2.23% for Blum's problem. The iteration number of DEA was confirmed to be smaller than the other two optimization methods. SA was confirmed to be 117.39~167.13 times higher than DEA and PSO was confirmed to be 2.43~6.91 times higher than DEA. Applying a DEA to the multi-variate back analysis of geotechnical problems can be expected to improve computational speed and accuracy.

  • In this paper, we proposed a multi-chain Time of Arrival (ToA) positioning method to estimate positions using all received Loran-C signals from multiple chains without constraining to a single chain. Conventionally, we have to choose only one chain among several available chains for position estimation using Loran-C. Therefore, the number of signals to be used for positioning is limited to three to five. In general, if more signals are used for positioning estimation, its performance tends to be improved in terms of accuracy and availability. To validate the proposed method for multi-chain Loran-C, we firstly carried out a static positioning test in land. By analyzing the test results, we confirmed that the proposed method works well under a multi-chain Loran-C scenario. Subsequently, another mobile positioning test was conducted on board a vessel under a practical application scenario. From this second test, we successfully demonstrated that the multi-chain ToA positioning method even in situations where the conventional single-chain Loran-C approach fails for positioning.
