  • This study aims to enhance English pronunciation education for Korean students by examining the impact of standard Korean and Gyeongsang regional dialect on the articulation of English vowels. Data were obtained through the Korean-Spoken English Corpus (K-SEC). Seven Korean words and ten English mono-syllabic words were uttered by adult, male speakers of standard Korean and Gyeongsang regional dialect, in particular, speakers with little to no experience living abroad were selected. Formant frequencies of the recorded corpus data were measured using spectrograms, provided by the speech analysis program, Praat. The recorded data were analyzed using the articulatory graph for formants. The results show that in comparison with speakers using standard Korean, those using the Gyeongsang regional dialect articulated both Korean and English vowels in the back. Moreover, the contrast between standard Korean and Gyeongsang regional dialect in the pronunciation of Korean vowels (/으/, /어/) affected how the corresponding English vowels (/ə/, /ʊ/) were articulated. Regardless of the use of regional dialect, a general feature of vowel pronunciation among Korean people is that they show more narrow articulatory movements, compared with that of native English speakers. Korean people generally experience difficulties with discriminating tense and lax vowels, whereas native English speakers have clear distinctions in vowel articulation.

  • Given that English grapheme is realized as five different American English vowels [ʌ, ju, ʊ, u, ə], the purpose of the current study is to examine Korean learners' perception and production of English grapheme and training effect on words with . Thus, the current study conducted pretest, training, and posttest for 31 Korean university students on 24 English words with . The overall results showed that the participants' perception and production accuracy was significantly improved in the posttest, thus indicating training effect on both perception and production. However, it was not the case that all five different vowels demonstrated training effect. In perception the accuracy rates of [ʌ], [ju], and [ə] were improved after training whereas those of [ʊ] and [u] were not. In production [ʌ], [ʊ], and [u] did not show training effect. These results indicate that the Korean participants had difficulty distinguishing between tense [u] and lax [ʊ] both in perception and production. In particular, the Korean participants tended to replace lax [ʊ] with tense [u] in production. This is because tense [u] is the best match to Korean [u] in acoustic measurements, so that tense [u] is easy for the Korean participants to pronounce than lax [ʊ]. Also, English [ʌ] tended to be mispronounced as [u]-quality vowels such as [u] and [ju], which is due to the spelling . The Korean participants also showed errors which insert [j] after alveolars [t, d, n, s], which runs against yod-dropping in American English. They also deleted [j] after labials and velars, which is due to the absence of orthography in the target words. Finally, pedagogical implications were discussed based on the findings of the current study.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the difference of vowel duration due to the voicing of word-final consonants in English and its relation to the types of word-final consonants (stops vs. fricatives), (partial) devoicing, and stop releasing. Addtionally, this study attempts to interpret the findings from the functional view that the vowels before voiced consonants are produced with a longer duration in order to enhance the salience of the voicing of word-final consonants. This study conducted a recording experiment with English native speakers, and measured the vowel duration, the degree of (partial) devoicing of word-final voiced consonants and the release of word-final stops. First, the results showed that the ratio of the duration difference was not influenced by the types of word-final consonants. Second, it was revealed that the higher the degree of (partial) devoicing of word-final voiced consonants, the longer vowel duration before word-final voiced consonants, which was compatible with the prediction based on the functional view. Lastly, the ratio of the duration difference was greater when the word-final stops were uttered with the release compared to when uttered without the release, which was not consistent with the functional view. These results suggest that it is not sufficient enough to explain the voicing effect by its function of distinguishing the voicing of word-final consonants.

  • This study investigates the following three things through a production experiment and acoustic analysis: 1) relationship between speech rate and the segment duration in Korean, 2) relationship between speech rate and spectral characteristics of vowels, i. e. undershoot, and 3) correlation between the vowel duration and undershoot. The results showed that the faster the speech rate nab, the shorter the duration of syllables and segments was. A few speakers were affected by speech rate in the durational ratios between closure and aspiration in a stop and between Towel and consonant in a syllable. Closure duration and vowel duration were more affected compared to aspiration and consonant duration, respectively. Speakers showed some differences in the extent to which speech rate affected vowel undershoot, implying that speakers used different production mechanisms for spectral characteristics of vowels: Some speakers speeded up movement of articulatory organs according to speech rate increase while some kept it constant regardless of speech rate change.

  • This study analyzed the changes of vowel formant, voice intensity, and fundamental frequency of vowels for 11 months using acoustochemical spectrogram analysis of women diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The test word was a vowel /a, i, u/ and a diphthong /h + ja + da/, /h + wi + da/, and /h +ɰi+ da/. Speech data were collected through the word reading task presented on the monitor using 'Alvin' program, and the recording environment was set to 5,500 Hz for the nyquist frequency and 11,000 Hz for the sampling rate. The records were analyzed by using spectrograms to vowel formants, voice intensity, and fundamental frequency. As a result of analysis, the fundamental frequency and intensity of the ALS process were decreased and the formant slope of the diphthong was decreased rather than the formant change in the vowel. This result suggests that the vowel distortion of ALS due to disease progression is due to the decrease of tongue and jaw co morbidity.
