  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was examine levels of breastfeeding knowledge, attitude and number of breastfeeding problems in early postpartum period and rate of breastfeeding practice at 3 months. Method: The total numbers of the study subjects were 139 mothers at postpartum unit and followed by postpartum 1 week and 3 months. Result: 1. The mean score of knowledge and attitude and problems toward breast feeding scale were 22.83(SD=5.19), 20.99(SD=3.40), and 9.04(SD=3.59) respectively, indicating low to moderate level according to subjects characteristics, breastfeeding knowledge scores were significantly different by age (F=8.00, p<.001), breastfeeding experience (t=3.26, p<.001) and parity(t=2.39, p<.05), but no difference were found in rate of breastfeeding attitude and number of problems. 2. Rate of breastfeeding practice was 46.5% at three months of postpartum and the breastfeeding practice was significantly different by breastfeeding plan period($x^2$=13.33, p<.001) and monthly income ($x^2$= 3.80, p<.05). 3. Further, breastfeeding practice at 3 months was continuously influenced by number of problems of the breast-feeding(OR=.85) and breastfeeding plan period(OR=2.11) at early postpartum period. Conclusion: The findings suggest the necessity of maternal support during postpartum period to provide correct information about rate of breastfeeding knowledge and attitude to teach problem solving skills for any breastfeeding problems in order to increase rate of breastfeeding practice.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences of knowledge and attitude level of breast feeding between breast feeding mothers and bottle feeding mothers. The subjects were mothers of 65 infants 1-6 months of age. Data were collected by a questionnaire on knowledge of breast feeding developed by Jung et al.(l994) and on attitude of breast feeding developed by Shin and Jeon(l996). The data was statistically analyzed according to Frequency, t-test, ANOVA and Pearson correlation coefficients. The results are as follows. 1) Degree of knowledge of breast feeding was significantly different according to child number(F=3.72, P<0.05) and delivery pattern(T=2.28, P<0.05) in breast feeding mothers. 2) There was a Significant difference on knowledge of breast feeding between breast feeding mothers and bottle feeding mothers(t=2.34, p<.05). 3) There was a statistical Significant difference on attitude of breast feeding between breast feeding mothers and bottle feeding mothers(t=3.05, p<.01). 4) The correlation between the mother's knowledge and attitude level of breast feeding was not found. Based on the results of this study, we suggest that systematic and supportive breast feeding program including knowledge and attitude of breast feeding have to be provided by nurse to mothers of infants to take an important role in breast feeding.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to identify effects of breastfeeding knowledge, attitude, and barriers on breastfeeding practice on twin mothers and to provide basic data for successful breastfeeding for twins. Methods: Participants were 151 mothers with two to twelve months-old twins. Data were collected from online support groups by an online survey. Results: Mean score for breastfeeding knowledge was $18.34{\pm}4.63$, for breastfeeding attitude was $3.61{\pm}0.51$, and for barriers to breastfeeding was $13.35{\pm}1.08$. The breastfeeding practice rate was 27.8% when twins were two months old. The breastfeeding knowledge was significantly different depending on mother's occupation, number of children, utilization of postpartum caretaker, and age of the children. There were significant differences in the breastfeeding attitude depending on gestational week of twins, planned length of the breastfeeding, and decision period for the breastfeeding. The practice of the breastfeeding was significantly different depending on the number of children. Factors influencing the breastfeeding practice were the breastfeeding attitude (p<.05), age of mother (p<.01), and the number of children (p<.01). Conclusion: An educational program and expert-led supportive system that is designed for twins are necessary, and they need to be included in prenatal care in order to have positive attitude for the breastfeeding as well as to breastfeed successfully.

  • A 15-minute questionnaire on breast-feeding was administered to the obstetric and pediatric residents and nurses in metropolitan academic training programs in Korea to assess their attitudes to and knowledge about breast-feeding and their confidence in managing breast-feeding problems. The questionnaires were self-administered and confidential and the participants was 279. Overall, the study participants indicated a supportive attitude toward breast-feeding. Nurses had a highest supportive attitude than obstetric and pediatric residents. Their self-confidence in this area was inappropriately high with 48% of total, 49% of obstetric, 42% of pediatric and 58% of nurses describing themselves as "confident" or "very confident" to manage common breast-feeding problems to compare their knowledge level answering only 46% of the questions correctly. However, nurses who did have continuing education about breast-feeding had significantly high in knowledge level. These health care professionals have extremely limited knowledge of breast-feeding management compared to their reported confidence. To be truly supportive of breast-feeding, health care professionals should receive didactic and clinical training to breast-feeding management.

  • By using Q-methodology, this study examines the attitudes of pregnant womens' husbands toward breastfeeding. Also, the research provides basic data necessary to develop a strategy for recommending breastfeeding. A total of 112 items for the Q-population were collected from related literature and interviews with the general public, specialists, pregnant women and their husbands. Finally, 38 statements were selected. Twenty one husbands of pregnant women classified these statements on each card on a 1 to 9 point scale(forced normal distribution) and wrote the reasons for both the most supported and the most resisted statements. The materials collected were analyzed by using pc QUANL program. The analysis drew down following fact that even though the attitudes of the husbands of pregnant were very similar, they could be classified to three types according to the motivation and recognition the degree of choosing breastfeeding. Type 1 is the mother's duty supporter, who insists that breastfeeding is completely natural and the proper duty of the mother. Type 2 is the emotional value supporter, who thinks that breastfeeding emotionally affects both the baby and the mother in a positive way. Type 3 is the conditional choice supporter, who chooses the most proper suckling way of feeding according to given conditions.

Knowledge and attitudes toward breastfeeding had positive correlations with nursing activities while breastfeeding. Factors influencing nursing students' nursing activities while breastfeeding included knowledge, attitudes toward breastfeeding, grade, breastfeeding educational experience, and breastfeeding intentions. These variables explained 18% of the variance in nursing activities while breastfeeding. Delineation of the Q-population the statements of Q-population had been derived from review of the related literature and a open-ended questionnaire filled by nurses, nursing students, general public, and the pregnant women. Total number of concourse collected was 105. 2. Selection of the Q-sample : Among 105 concourse, those which has obscure or overlapped were deleted. 38 concourse were selected finally. 3. Selection of the P-sample : by the convenient sampling technique, 28 subjects had been deter mined among the pregnant women who visited a hospital affiliated with university for the antenatal care, from March to August, 1993. 4. Q-sorting : based on 1 to 9 point scale (forced normal distribution), the selected P-sample rated their operant definition of breast feeding. 5. Determination of Q-type : with Q-sorts, PC-Quanal program identified the three Q-types. 6. Analysis of Q-type : the characteristics of three different attitude had been analyzed based on the typal array, extreme comments, and subject$\sim$s demographic information. The results revealed that there are three different altitudes nth regard to breast feeding : Instinct oriented attitude, Science oriented attitude, and Convenience oriented altitude. Mothers with Instinct oriented attitude and Science oriented altitude are thought to have high possibility to breastfeed their infant willingly, and mothers with Convenience oriented attitude to breast feed under the favorable conditions. These findings can be used as the information giving data for the education to encourage breast feeding.
