  • The Green-Ampt equation for infiltration has been intensively investigated by many researchers because of its simplicity and adequacy for fitting experimental data to theoretical one. The infiltration equation derived from the theory of two phase flow coincides with the Green-Ampt equation except the viscouse resistance correction factor. This approach clearly defines variables in the Green-Ampt equation and also encounters the effect of viscosity of two fluids. A new equation for infiltration into multilayered soil is derived from the theory of two phase flow and compared with conventional equation. The new equation shows lower infiltration rate than that of conventional one and it is believed that this caused from the inclusion of viscosity in the derivation.

  • Through the numerical analysis of the capillary pressure-based Richards equation with and without the effect of the capillary hysteresis under the boundary condition having an antecedent rainfall. the moving tendency of the wetting front, the redistribution of the moisture content, infiltration rate, cumulative infiltration etc, were computed. The effect of the capillary hysteresis cannot be neglected in analyzing an unsaturated flow, and the more accurate results may be obtained by the consideration of the hysteresis effect. If the effect of the hysteresis cannot be considered, the analysis by the use of the main wetting curve may give more reliable result than that of the main drying curve.

  • Although many studies have been done on an open-end capillary, the invasion into a closed end capillary is still novel in its investigation. In this research we have explored the fluid invasion in closed-end capillaries where the shape of the meniscus and the height of invasion were accompanied by gas compression inside the capillary. Theoretically, the one dimensional momentum balance equation shows the fluid oscillation. In the experiments, we have found the different phenomena, either the fluid oscillation with low frequency or no oscillation. This discrepancy is mostly caused by two factors. First, a continuous decrease of the advancing contact angle due to decreasing invasion velocity as increasing pressure inside the closed-end capillary reduces the invasion velocities. Second, the high shear stress within the entrance length region was generated by the plug like velocity profile.

  • In this study, permeable repair materials mainly composed of silicate - based inorganic materials(SIM), which are easily available domestically, were prepared as a basic study for the development of permeable repair materials using SIM. SIM were compared and examined for their performance as repair materials by selecting a product group which has many cases of use in foreign countries. The SIM used were mainly composed of sodium, potassium and lithium silicate. Performance evaluation of SIM was performed by absorption and penetration, compression and adhesion, rapid chloride ion penetration, rapid freezing and thawing, and chemical resistance test. According to the test results, SIM showed effective performance in all areas, mainly because SIM permeates into the interior of the capillary and has a dense internal microstructure. Therefore, it can be used variously to improve the durability of concrete based on the results of this experiment.

  • In this paper, a high-speed imaging and an image processing technique have been applied to detect the position of a meniscus as a function of time in the micro capillary flows. Two fluids with low and high viscosities, ethylene glycol and glycerin, were dropped into the entrance well of a circular capillary tube. The filling times of the meniscus in both cases of ethylene glycol and glycerin were compared with the theoretical models - Washburn model and its modified model based on Newman's dynamic contact angle equation. To evaluate the model coefficients of Newman's dynamic contact angle, time-varying contact angles under the capillary flows were measured using an image processing technique. By considering the dynamic contact angle, the estimated filling time from the modified Washburn model agrees well with the experimental data. Especially, for the lower-viscosity fluid, the consideration of dynamic contact angle is more significant than for the higher-viscosity fluid.

  • The Marine concrete that located at immersion zone receives an hydrostatic pressure of 1 atm as depth of the water increased by 10 m. And it could accelerate chloride ion penetration. In this study, to evaluate the influence of hydrostatic pressure on chloride ion penetration, concrete mixed by ordinary Portland cement and Portland blast-furnace slag cement was exposed to 1 and 6 atm and substitute ocean water. As a result, the surface chloride ion concentration of the concrete under 6 atm of hydrostatic pressure increased rapidly and the water-soluble chloride ion contents was increased by depth. In addition, the concrete under 6 atm of hydrostatic pressure showed the increase of capillary pores corresponding to 5~100 nm.

  • Significant damage to concrete results from the intrusion of corrosive solutions, for example, dissolved chlorides corrode reinforcing steel and cause spatting. Effectively blocks the penetration of these solutions will eliminate or greatly reduce this damage and lead to increased durability. This study is to investigate the effects of pozzolanic admixtures, fly ash and silica fume, and a blast furnace slag on the chloride ion penetration of concretes. The main experimental variables wore the water-cementitious material ratios, the types and amount of admixtures, and the curing time. And it is tested for the porosity and pore size distributions of cement paste, chloride ion permeability based on electrical conductance, and 180-day ponding test for chloride intrusion. The results show that the resistance of concrete to the penetration of chloride ions increases as the w/c was decreased, and the increasing of curing time. Also, concrete with pozzolans exhibited higher resistance to chloride ion penetration than the plain concrete. The significant reduction in chloride ion permeability(charge passed) of concrete with pozzolans due to formation of a discontinuous macro-pore system which inhibits flow. It is shown that there is a relationship between chloride ion permeability and depth of chloride ion penetration of concrete, based on the pore structure (porosity and pore size distributions) of cement paste.

  • Purpose: This study is about offering ways of improving existing technical standards in order to propose how to deal with coal deep-seated fire and to increase effectiveness of wetting agent. Method: This study conducts infiltration experiment using eight tons of coal, three types of wetting agents and fire water. And this study analyzes domestic and international technical standards, overseas experimental cases. Result: It is found that two findings are identified; one is fire water cannot infiltrate into the coal due to high level of surface tension, and the other is three types of wetting agent can infiltrate into the coal to the depth of 5~25cm. Also, domestic wetting agent technical standards include measuring surface tension only and testing wood on extinguishing capacity test. On the other hand, this study found that deep-seated fire experiment using cotton, B-class fire test using heptane are used from abroad. Besides it is analyze that capillary rise test, sink test, contact angle measurement are conducted to increase effectiveness of wetting agent at the U.S. Bureau of Mines. Conclusion: Based on standards and cases of U.S. NFPA and Bureau of Mines, this study suggests that domestic technical standards should include adding a new test standard which measures infiltration directly.
