  • In this study the modal characteristics and responses of an asymmetric structure with added viscoelastic dampers were investigated for design parameters such as eccentricity of stiffness and added dampers, the loss factor of the damping materials used. For modal characteristics, variation of the quantities such as natural frequencies, modal damping ratios, modal participation factors, and dynamic amplification factors were observed, and displacements at flexible and stiff edges, and at center of mass were obtained. Based on the results, the problem of the optimum damper distribution to minimize the torsional effects was addressed, and the proposed method for optimum damper distribution was applied to a multi-story structure to verify the applicability Finally the effect of viscous and viscoelastic dampers were compared by varying the loss factor of the viscoelastic material.

  • This paper presents a design procedure for viscoelastic dampers to be installed in a full-scale steel structure and observes their vibration control effect, based on the excitation method and the dynamic characteristics of the structure investigated in the companion paper, Additional damping ratios required to reduce the maximum displacement to a given level were obtained by convex model. The size of dampers was determined by observing the change in modal damping ratio due to the change in damper stiffness using the modal strain energy method, The effect of the supporting braces was also considered in the determination of the modal properties. Two viscoelastic dampers were installed at the first and second inter-stories, respectively and their response reduction is verified.

  • In this study, a simplified design procedure for friction dampers of a multi-story structure in order to reduce seismic response is proposed. To get insight for control effect of the structure with friction dampers is difficult, because of a nonlinear characteristic by a friction damper. Since a control force of a friction damper is influenced by coupling velocity between floors, adjoining modes are coupled. Thus structural response are derived by assuming steady-state response in resonance. As it is impossible that an exact solution is obtained for seismic load, first, a closed form solution can be achieved under harmonic vibration. Second, to convert a three-story building into a single-degree-of-freedom(SDOF) structure, modal analysis is performed. Third, an equivalent damping ratio is derived with utilizing closed form solution. And response reducing factor is proposed by it. Finally, friction force of a damper is designed for using response reducing factor, and then designed dampers are verified for seven seismic data. The nonlinear analysis results confirm the validity of the proposed procedure.

  • Effect of radial position of half-wave resonator is investigated experimentally for acoustic damping of tangential mode in a combustion chamber by adopting acoustic cold test. When resonator with optimal tuning length is installed, damping is enhanced as its radial location is away from the center of the faceplate. And, radial profile of damping factor is similar to that of the amplitude of the acoustic mode to be damped. As the location is close to the center, acoustic damping is mitigated and independent on the resonator length. on the other hand, the resonator with non-optimal length dose not show any effect of its radial position.

  • The estimation of system damping parameter of the response signal with lower natural frequency and higher damping parameter from free vibration is affected by the wavelet center frequency. This study discusses these considerations in the context of the wavelet's multi-resolution character and includes guidelines for selection of wavelet center frequency. The experiment with H-Beam and numerical examples with respect to three cases (i)single mode, (ii)separated modes and (iii)close modes demonstrate the validity of method to improve the accuracy of the estimated damping parameter. The localization of the corresponding scale for the total scales is determined by the natural frequency of the analysing mode and is affected by the wavelet center frequency. Thus, the reliability for the accuracy of the estimated damping parameter can be improved by the corresponding scale of the natural frequency for the analysing mode is localized at the half of the total scales.

  • To reduce the vibration levels, additional dissipation elements such as dry friction dampers are sometimes integrated into bladed disk assembly. In this study, forced response analysis systems for a tuned bladed disk with friction dampers were developed and verified. For the efficient nonlinear vibration analysis, multi-harmonic balanced method and cyclic boundary condition were used. Also, mode shapes obtained using fictitious mass method were used to describe the motion of the structures with the concentrated structural nonlinearity, friction damper. The relative convergence of fictitious mass and traditional unconstrained modes were compared.

  • The eigenvalue problem is presented for the building with added viscoelastic dampers by using component mode method. The Lagrange multiplier formulation is used to derive the eigenvalue problem which is expressed with the natural frequencies of the building, the mode components at which the dampers are added, and the viscoelastic property of the damper. The derived eigenvalue problem has a nonstandard form for determining the eigenvalues. Therefore, the problem is examined by the graphical depiction to give new insight into the eigenvalues for the building with added viscoelastic dampers. Using the present approach the exact eigenvalues can be found and also upper and lower bounds of the eigenvalues can be obtained.

  • This paper introduces a new technique that can extract natural frequencies and damping ratios from output-only vibration data. Firstly, the free vibration data is obtained from the cross correlations of the output-only response data using a singular value decomposition process. Secondly, the well-known system identification algorithm is applied to extract the natural frequencies and damping ratios from the extracted free vibration data. Comparing to ERADC technique, the accuracy of the proposed modal parameter identification algorithm has been numerically examined. Furthermore, the practicability of the proposed algorithm has been examined through the output-only acceleration data collected from the Seohae cable-stayed bridge. Using the proposed technique, total 24 modes have been identified for the deck plate motions of the bridge.
