Several techniques and methods for ontology modularization have been proposed recently. However, there are few ontology evaluation frameworks to evaluate these techniques and methods. Most researches on ontology modularization have not been focused on ontology modularization evaluation but ontology modularization process itself. In this paper, we devise a novel ontology modularization evaluation framework to measure the quality of ontology modules, logical integrity during modularization process and modularization tools. Experiments were conducted to validate the proposed framework. Three representative modularization approaches SWOOP, Prompt, and PATO were chosen and used to partition or extract modules from an ontology. Then the proposed evaluation framework is applied to these modules. The experiment results indicate that the modularization framework works well. The proposed framework would help ontology engineers improve ontology module quality, anticipate and reduce future maintenance as well as help ontology users to choose ontology modules that best meet their requirements.
How has the passenger car's architecture evolved? In the meantime, the discussions on the car architecture have been mixed, i.e., integral, modular, and the coexistence of two types. Therefore, in this study, we aim to develop two indices can measure the degree of modularization of passenger car and its all modules using global trade data. By applying the indices to the framework of architecture positioning that reflects the hierarchical structure of a product, we examined that the degree of modularization of the passenger car architecture has been enhanced. Meanwhile, the degree of modularization differs across the modules that make up the car. Specifically, we observed the higher degree of modularization in front-end, cockpit and seat modules. Whereas, we found that body module had a relatively low degree of modularization. In particular, we observed that the platform of passenger car has notably modularized due to carmakers' efforts to achieve model diversification and reduction of cost and period in new product development at the same time. Interestingly, we showed that three modules, i.e., engine, chassis (relatively less modularized), and transmission (relatively highly modularized), had a different level of modularization, even if they commonly make up the platform. We contribute to the suggestion for analytical approaches that examine the degree of modularization and its progress longitudinally. In addition, we propose the necessity of decomposition of a system into elements in a study of product architecture, considering the possibly distinctive progress of modularization across the elements.

Social robots are attracting attention as an alternative to social problems in modern society, and the need for modularization has been raised to efficiently manage various robots. The study aims to reestablish the concept of 'Personal social service robot' and propose a new modularization method to apply it. For this study, literature research about the definition of social robots and service robots is conducted. In addition, we investigated the modularization of robots and analyzed the modularization cases of service robots. Based on this, we have deducted considerations for applying social service robot modularization and proposed a new modularization. This study divided the module into active module and passive module according to whether it is electric or electronic component of the module, and the active module was again classified into basic module and additional module according to the basic and replacement type of the robot. The modularization was verified by making the prototype of the actual robot.

This paper describes modular fuzzy inference systems(MFIS) with adaptive capability to extract fuzzy inference modules from observation data through the learning process. The proposed MFIS is based on the structural similarity to Tagaki-Sugeno fuzzy models and a modular neural architecture. The learning of MFIS is done by assigning new fuzzy inference modules and by updating the parameters of existing modules. The fuzzy inference modules consist of local model network and fuzzy gating network. The parameters of the MFIS are updated by the standard LMS algorithm. The performance of the MFIS is illustrated with adaptive control of a nonlinear dynamic system.
In response to an increased need, various methods for ontology modularization have been proposed. However, few studies have focused on evaluative methods for ontology modules. In this study, we devise novel metrics to measure ontology modularity. To evaluate the ontology modules, we introduce cohesion and coupling based on the theory of software metrics. A cohesion metric and two coupling metrics were used to measure cohesion and coupling for ontology modules. These metrics were also used to check consistency between the ontology modules and the original ontology. The new metrics support a more detailed relationship between classes in ontology modules. We validate the proposed metrics using the well known verification framework and perform the empirical experiments to complement previous investigations. This study offers ontology engineers valuable criteria with which to select and use ontology modules and modularization techniques.

As customers' needs are more diversified, the issue of managing product variety has become more important to manufacturers. It is because an increase in product variety may cause various inefficiencies in operations, while satisfying more diverse needs. Consequently, firms have introduced the concept of modularity to improve operational performance. Yet there are only a few studies which analytically investigate the effect of modularity in new product development (NPD). Therefore, this research develops an analytical model of exploring the effect of modularity on firm profitability when a component built upon new technology is introduced into an existing product, and provides important managerial implications on the NPD and technology management, which can guide the decision making on modularity in practice. The results show that it is necessary to increase modularity level when i) the product is easy to upgrade, ii) the product's price should be high due to external factors, and iii) the effect of new technology investment is uncertain, while it is desirable to increase the investment cost for introducing new products with low demand elasticity for modularity.

The internal pressure capacity of a modular containment structure requires analysis to prevent the release of radioactive material in the case of an accident. To analyze the capacity, FEM models were prepared while considering the tendon arrangements and the contact surfaces between precast concrete modules, and then static analyses were carried out. The changing characteristics in the displacement and stress under step-wise loading were analyzed, along with the effects of selected parameters. For comparison, the capacity of a monolithic containment structure was also analyzed. Parametric analyses were done to suggest ranges of parameters such as the tendon force, tendon spacing, tendon location in concrete thickness direction, friction coefficient, and concrete thickness. The tendon force and frictional force provide a combined effect between contact surfaces of modules. The same level of internal pressure capacity can be secured even in the modular containment structure as in the monolithic containment structure by increasing the tendon force with additional tendons.
