  • Conversion of anaerobic mesophilic digestion to thermophilic range has been investigated using a synthetic sludge. When temperature was raised at a rate of 2, 1, and $0.5^{\circ}C$ per day with continuous feeding, a lower reaction rate was observed with a high rate of temperature change. Although methane fermentation ceased completely for an digesters at thermophilic temperature, acid fermentation continued. Methane fermentation was never achieved even with neutralization during 6 months of resting. The methane formers were completely inactivated by the temperature shock and accumulation of volatile acids due to continuous feeding, while the acid formers lost biological activity quickly, but gradually acclimated to a high temperature. When temperature was raised without feeding, successful thermophilic digestion was achieved with 1 day of resting at thermophilic temperature at a rate of $1^{\circ}C$ per day, and also achieved with 20 days of resting at a direct increase. Conversion to a thermophilic range is easily achieved with resting. A short period of resting is required at a low rate of temperature increase, while a long period of resting enough to balance methane formers with acid fermers makes a conversion possile when temperature is raised at a high rate. Soured thermophilic digesters were recovered after seeding of mesophilic sludges, and sludge seeding could be a good method of start-up, conversion, or recovery of a thermophilic digester. Significant amount of thermophiles seemed to be present in the mesophilic digesters.

  • BACKGROUND: Anaerobic digestion process is recently adapted technology for treatment of organic waste such as animal manure because the energy embedded in the waste can be recovered from the waste while the organic waste were digested. Ever increased demand for consumption of meat resulted in the excessive use of antimicrobials to the livestocks for more food production. Most antimicrobials administered to animals are excreted through urine and feces, which might highly affect the biological treatment processes of the animal manure. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of antimicrobials on the efficiency of anaerobic digestion process and to clarify the interactions between antimicrobials and anaerobes. METHODS AND RESULTS: The experiment was consisted of two parts 1) batch test to investigate the effects of individual antibiotic compounds on production of methane and VFAs(volatile fatty acids), and removal efficiency of organic matter, and 2) the continuous reactor test to elucidate the effects of mixed antimicrobials on the whole anaerobic digestion process. The batch test showed no inhibitions in the rate of methane and VFAs production, and the rate of organic removal were observed with treatment at 1~10 mg/L of antimicrobials while temporary inhibition was observed at 50 mg/L treatment. In contrast, treatment of 100 mg/L antimicrobials resulted in continuous decreased in the rate of methane production and organic removal efficiency. The continuous reactor test conduced to see the influence of the mixed antimicrobials showed only small declines in the methane production and organic matter removal when 1~10 mg/L of combined antimicrobials were applied but this was not significant. In contrast, with the treatment of 50 mg/L of combined antimicrobials, the rate of organic removal efficiency in effluent decreased by 2~15% and the rate of biogas production decreased by 30%. CONCLUSION(s): The antimicrobials remained in the animal manure might not be removed during the anaerobic digestion process and hence, is likely to be released to the natural ecosystem. Therefore, the efforts to decline the usage of antimicrobials for animal farming would be highly recommended.

  • In this study, we evaluated anti-oxidation, whitening and anti-inflammatory effects of Elsholtzia ciliata extract for use as the cosmeceuticals. Elsholtzia ciliata extracts (30, 70 and 100% methanol extract) exhibited a significant tree radical scavenging effect (up to 80% over 0.025% concentration of 30 and 70% methanol extract, over 0.01% concentration of 100% methanol extract) against DPPH radical generation and showed a significant inhibitory effect (up to 80% over 0.1% concentration) on melanin synthesis in B-16 Melanoma cells. We separated 4 fractions from Elsholtzia ciliata extract (70% methanol extract) by MPLC. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd fractions showed anti-oxidation (DPPH radical scavenging activity and suppressive effect on Mn-SOD), whitening(inhibitory effect on melanin synthesis) and anti-inflammatory (suppressive effects on $IL-1{\alpha}$, IL-6, COX-2, and total NO synthesis) effects.

  • The recent gradual increase in the energy demand is mostly met by fossil fuel, but the research on and development of new alternative energy sources is drawing much attention due to the limited fossil fuel supply and the greenhouse gas problem. This paper assesses the feasibility of producing fuel energy from a dewatered sewage sludge by microwave-induced pyrolysis with sludge char and graphite receptor. Both receptors produced gas, char, and tar in order from product amount. The gas produced for the sludge char receptor contained mainly hydrogen and methane with a small amount of light hydrocarbons. The graphite receptor generated higher gravimetric tar and generated higher light tar. Through the results, the product gas from the microwave processes of wet sewage sludge might be possible as a fuel energy. But the product gas has to be removed the condensable PAH tars.

  • The gaseous mixtures of iso-propanol of 10 torr with carbon dioxide of 0∼1990 torr were irradiated with Co-60 gamma radiation up to 50 kGy, and the products such as carbon monoxide, acetone, methane, ethane, C$_3$H$_a$, C$_4$H$_b$ and tert-butanol were analyzed by gas chromatography. G(CO) value of 4 was obtained from the gas mixtures containing more than 490 torr of carbon dioxide. The production rates of the organic products and the decomposition rate of iso-propanol increased linearly with the pressure of carbon dioxide, and G(-iso-Propanol) and G(Acetone) values increased by 4 and 2, respectively, with each 10 torr increment of carbon dioxide pressure. The mechanisms of the radiolytic decomposition of iso-propanol and the production of carbon monoxide and organic materials are discussed on the basis of the experimental results of the present study.

  • We investigated a bias effect for diamond films deposited by a HFCVD(Hot Filament Chemical Vapor Deposition) method using a methane-hydrogen gas mixture. During deposition total chamber pressure, methane concentration, filament temperature and substrate temperature was 20 torr, 1.0%, $2100^{\circ}C$ and $980^{\circ}C$ respectively. Also DC bias was applied during both the nucleation stage and the growth stage systematically. We found that negative bias enhanced the nucleation density at the nucleation stage, but it made a bad influence on the morpholohy of films at the growth stage. Positive bias enhanced the growth rate and resulted in a good morpholohy of films. Therefore we concluded that it was effective to apply the negative bias during the nucleation stage and then to switch into the positive bias during the growth stage in the fabrication of diamond films.

  • This study was conducted to analyze and determine formation potentials for chlorination disinfection by-products (DBPs) from twenty amino acid compounds with or without $Br^-$. Two of twenty amino acid compound were tryptophan and tyrosine that were relatively shown high for formation of trihalomethanes (THMs)/dissolved organic carbon (DOC) whether or not $Br^-$ presented. Other 18 compounds were shown low for formation of THMs/DOC whether or not $Br^-$ presented. Five amino acid compounds that were tryptophan, tyrosine, asparagine, aspartic acid and histidine were shown high for formation of haloacetic acids (HAAs)/DOC whether or not $Br^-$ presented. Although formation of dichloroacetic acid (DCAA) was dominated in asparagine, aspartic acid and histidine, trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) was dominated in tryptophan and tryptophan. The formation of haloacetnitriles (HANs)/DOC whether or not $Br^-$ presented was high in Aspartic acid, histidine, asparagine, tyrosine and tryptophan. Specially, aspartic acid was detected 660.2 ${\mu}$g/mg (HAN/DOC). Although the formation of chloralhydrate (CH)/DOC was shown high in asparagine, aspartic acid, histidine, methionine, tryptophan and tyrosine, the formation of Chloropicrin (CP)/DOC was low (1 ${\mu}$g/mg) in twenty amino acid compounds. The formations of THM, HAA and HAN were also investigated in functional groups of amino acids. The highest formation of THM was shown in amino acids compounds (tryptophan and tyrosine) with an aromatic functional group. Highest, second-highest, third-highest and fourth-highest functional groups for formation of HAA were aromatic, neutral, acidic and basic respectively. In order of increasing functional groups for formation of HAN were acidic, basic, neutral and aromatic.

  • The distributed systems managed by K-water were surveyed to study the characteristic of disinfection-by-product (Trihalomethans & Haloacetic acids) formation and the correlations between the concentrations of disinfection-by-product and physico-chemical parameters. Five distribted system were selected according to their water ages and the degree of deterioration of their pipelines. Total seven items including Trihalomethans (THMs), Haloacetic acids (HAAs), BDOC, DOC, pH, chlorine residual, and temperature were analysed in monthly basis. The concentration of organic matter were increased according to water age and pipeline deterioration in this study. The coefficient of determination between the decline of residual chlorine and the increase of water age was revealed as high. Also, the coefficient of determination between the decline rate of residual chlorine and the increase of the Trihalomethans concentration were studied as high. Furthermore the longer water age is the bigger the effect on Trihalomethans formation and temperature. However, the coefficient of determination between the concentraion of Haloacetic acid and water age, residual chlorine, and temperature were revealed as low in this study.

  • Nitric oxide ($NO_x$) formation characteristics in non-premixed diffusion flames of methane fuels have been investigated experimentally and numerically by adding 10% ammonia to the fuel stream, according to the variation of the oxygen ratio in the oxidizer with oxygen/carbon dioxide and oxygen/nitrogen mixtures. In an experiment of coflow jet flames, in the case of an oxidizer with oxygen/carbon dioxide, the $NO_x$ emission increased slightly as the oxygen ratio increased. On the other hand, in case of an oxygen/nitrogen oxidizer, the $NO_x$ emission was the maximum at an oxygen ratio of 0.7, and it exhibited non-monotonic behavior according to the oxygen ratio. Consequently, the $NO_x$ emission in the condition of oxyfuel combustion was overestimated as compared to that in the condition of conventional air combustion. To elucidate the characteristics of $NO_x$ formation for various oxidizer compositions, 1D and 2D numerical simulations have been conducted by adopting one kinetic mechanism. The result of 2D simulation for an oxidizer with oxygen/nitrogen well predicted the trend of experimentally measured $NO_x$ emissions.

  • pure compound chloromethanes; methyl chloride, methylene chloride, chloroform and The carbon tetrachloride were used as a model of chlorocarbon system with Cl/H ratio to investigate thermal stability and hydrodechlorination process of carbon tetrachloride under excess hydrogen atmosphere. The parent thermal stability on basis of temperature required for 99% destruction at 1 second no was evaluated as $875^{\circ}C$ for $CH_3Cl$, $780^{\circ}C$ for $CH_2Cl_2$, $675^{\circ}C$ for $CHCl_3$ and $635^{\circ}C$ for $CCl_4$. Chloroform was thermally less stable than $CCl_4$ at fairly low temperatures $(<570^{\circ}C).$ The lion of $CCl_4$ became more sensitive to increasing temperature, and $CCl_4$ was degraded CHCl3 at above $570^{\circ}C.$ The number and quantity of chlorinated products decreases with increasing temperature for the Product distribution of $CCl_4$ decomposition reaction system. Formation of non-chlorinated hydrocarbons such as $CH_4$, $C_2H_4$ and C_2H_6$ increased as the temperature rise and particularly small amount of methyl chloride was observed above $850^{\circ}C$ in $CC1_4$/$H_2$ reaction system. The less chlorinated products are more stable, with methyl chloride the most stable chlorocarbon in this reaction system.
