  • Since high packet losses occur in multi-hop transmission of wireless sensor networks, reliable data transmission is required. Especially, in case of event-driven data, a loss recovery mechanism should be provided for lost packets. Because retransmission for lost packets is requested to a node that caches the packets, the caching node should maintains all of data for transmission in its buffer. However, nodes of wireless sensor networks have limited resources. Thus, both a loss recovery mechanism and a buffer management technique are provided for reliable data transmission in wireless sensor networks. In this paper, we propose a buffer management technique at a caching position determined by a loss recovery mechanism. The caching position of data is determined according to desirable reliability for the data. In addition, we validate the performance of the proposed method through computer simulations.

  • Due to the application-specific nature of wireless sensor networks, the sensitivity to such a requirement as data reporting latency may vary depending on the type of applications, thus requiring application-specific algorithm and protocol design paradigms which help us to maximize energy conservation and thus the network lifetime. In this paper, we propose a novel delay-adaptive sensor scheduling scheme for energy-saving data gathering which is based on a two phase clustering (TPC). The ultimate goal is to extend the network lifetime by providing sensors with high adaptability to the application-dependent and time-varying delay requirements. The TPC requests sensors to construct two types of links: direct and relay links. The direct links are used for control and forwarding time critical sensed data. On the other hand, the relay links are used only for data forwarding based on the user delay constraints, thus allowing the sensors to opportunistically use the most energy-saving links and forming a multi-hop path. Simulation results demonstrate that cluster-based delay-adaptive data gathering strategy (CD-DGS) saves a significant amount of energy for dense sensor networks by adapting to the user delay constraints.

  • This paper aims to integrate the previous models about mean object transfer latency in one framework and analyze the result through the computational experience. The analytical object transfer latency model assumes the multiple packet losses and the Internet of Things(IoT) environment including multi-hop wireless network, where fast re-transmission is not possible due to small window. The model also considers the initial congestion window size and the multiple packet loss in one congestion window. Performance evaluation shows that the lower and upper bounds of the mean object transfer latency are almost the same when both transfer object size and packet loss rate are small. However, as packet loss rate increases, the size of the initial congestion window and the round-trip time affect the upper and lower bounds of the mean object transfer latency.

  • In conventional cooperative communication data rate is 1/2 than non cooperative protocols. In this paper, we propose a full data rate DF (Decode and Forward) cooperative transmission scheme. Proposed scheme is based on time division multiplexing (TDM) channel access. When DF protocol has full data rate, it can not obtain diversity gain under the pairwise error probability (PEP) view point. If it increases time slot to obtain diversity gain, then data rate is reduced. The proposed algorithm uses orthogonal frequency and constellation rotation to obtain both full data rate and diversity order 2. Moreover, performance is analyzed according to distance and optimized components that affect the system performance by using computer simulation. The simulation results revealed that the cooperation can save the network power up to 7dB over direct transmission and 5dB over multi-hop transmission at BER of $10^{-2}$. Besides, it can improve date rate of system compared with the conventional DF protocol.

  • In this paper, we proposed the efficient addressing scheme for improving the performance of routing algorithm by using ZigBee in Smart Grid environment. In a 16-bit address space and the network size of a few thousands, it is very unlikely to suffer from frequent address collisions. In response, we propose an elegant (x, y, z) coordinate axes addressing scheme from divided address space of 16 bit and its routing algorithm. One of disadvantages of (x, y) coordinate axes addressing, however, is that any router may not hold as many children as proposed, since sensor nodes tend to be connected to a geographically nearby router. We also present an adaptive routing algorithm for location-aware routing algorithms, using our addressing scheme. As a result, each node was reduced not only bitwise but also multi hop using the coordinate axes while routing and the effective address assignment and routing is to minimize the average energy consumption of each node in the network.

  • As a broadcast message authentication method in wireless sensor networks, ${\mu}$TESLA enables sensor nodes efficiently authenticate message from base station (BS). However, if we use ${\mu}$TESLA that has very short length of key slot in unattended wireless sensor network (UWSN), sensors may calculate a huge amount of hashs at once in order to verify the revealed secret key. In contrast, if we set the length of ${\mu}$TESLA's key slot too long in order to reduce the amount of hashs to calculate, BS should wait out the long slot time to release key. In this paper, we suggest variable key slot ${\mu}$TESLA in order to mitigate the problem. As showing experiment results, we prove that our suggestion improve sensor node's response time and decrease of number of hash function calculation.

  • This paper aims to present the mathematical model to find the mean web object transfer latency in the slow-start phase of TCP congestion control mechanism, which is one of the main control techniques of Internet. Mean latency is an important service quality measure of end-user in the network. The application area of the proposed latency model is the narrowband environment including multi-hop wireless network and Internet of Things(IoT), where packet loss occurs in the slow-start phase only due to small window. The model finds the latency considering initial window size and the packet loss rate. Our model shows that for a given packet loss rate, round trip time and initial window size mainly affect the mean web object transfer latency. The proposed model can be applied to estimate the mean response time that end user requires in the IoT service applications.

  • In this paper, we propose a Route Stability-based Direction Guided Routing protocol(RSDGR) in mobile ad-hoc wireless networks. The main features and contributions of the proposed routing protocol are as follows. First, it can calculate link stability between two nodes as well as route stability of multi hop quantitatively by using nodes' mobility. And this protocol can establish the most stable path between a source node and a destination node. Second, according to the route stability between a source node and a destination node, it can control and optimize the direction guided region dynamically for route setup. Third, we suggest theoretical model for quantitative calculation of link stability between two nodes and route stability of multi hop path. The performance evaluation of the proposed routing protocol is performed by simulation using OPNET(Optimized Network Engineering Tool) and theoretical analysis. The results of performance evaluation show that the patterns of PDR are similar in simulation and analysis according to route stability. The faster mobile nodes' velocity and the smaller source node's direct guided reigion, the lower route stability and PDR and the higher delay and control overhead related to this.

  • With the fast development in wireless communications and vehicular technologies, vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) have enabled to deliver data between vehicles. Recently, VANETs introduce a Vehicular Cloud (VC) model for collaborating to share and use resources of vehicles to create value-added services. To construct a VC, a vehicle should search vehicles that intend to provide their own resource. The single-hop search cannot search enough provider vehicles due to a small coverage and non-line-of-sights of communications. On the other hand, the multi-hop search causes very high traffics for large coverage searching and frequent connection breakages. Recently, many Roadside Units (RSUs) have been deployed on roads to collect the information of vehicles in their own coverages and to connect them to Internet. Thus, we propose a RSU-aided vehicular resource search and cloud construction mechanism in VANETS. In the proposed mechanism, a RSU collects the information of location and mobility of vehicles and selects provider vehicles enabled to provide resources needed for constructing a VC of a requester vehicle based on the collected information. In the proposed mechanism, the criteria for determining provider vehicles to provide resources are the connection duration between each candidate vehicle and the requester vehicle, the resource size of each candidate vehicle, and its connection starting time to the requester vehicle. Simulation results verify that the proposed mechanism achieves better performance than the existing mechanism.

  • Vehicular ad-hoc networks is temporarily established through inter-vehicle communication without any additional infrastructure aids. It requires a immediate message propagation because it mainly deals with critical traffic information such as traffic accidents. The distance-based broadcast scheme is one of the representative broadcast schemes for vehicular ad-hoc network. In this scheme, a node to disseminate messages is selected based on a distance from a source node. However, a message propagation delay will be increased if the relay nodes are not placed at the border of transmission range of the source node. In particular, when the node density is low, the message propagation delay is getting longer. In this paper, we propose a time-window reservation based relay node selection scheme. A node receiving the alert message from the source node has its time-window and randomly selects its waiting time within the given time-window range. A proportional time period of the given time-window is reserved in order to reduce the message propagation delay. The experimental results show that the proposed scheme has shorter message propagation delay than the distance-based broadcast scheme irrespective of node density in VANET. In particular, when the node density is low, the proposed scheme shows about 26% shorter delay and about 46% better performance in terms of compound metric, which is a function of propagation latency and network traffic.
