  • Emission from meat cooking may contribute to the concentration of the Particulate Matters(PM) in the city. This study is to investigate the particle size and the emission characteristics of particulate matters from pork and beef cooking. The chamber was installed for sampling of PM generated from pork belly and beef sirloin cooking including seasoned ones. Cascade Impactor and Portable Aerosol Monitor (PAM) were used to analyse the particle size distribution. At the result of the Cascade Impactor sampling, particulate matters from the pork cooking was higher than that of beef. The gravimetric concentration of PM according to the size was highest at the range of $1.95{\sim}3.2{\mu}m$ and the gravimetric concentration of PM from the non-seasoned meat was higher than that of the seasoned one. The emission factors from pork, pork seasoned, beef and beef seasoned were 1.36 g/kg, 1.03 g/kg, 1.23 g/kg, 0.92 g/kg respectively. To see the result of PAM sampling, the ranges of $1.6{\sim}2.5{\mu}m$ and $2.5{\sim}3.5{\mu}m$ were reveled as highest. The ration of $PM_{2.5}/PM_{10}$ from pork and beef was 0.56~0.58. The emission factors from pork, pork seasoned, beef and beef seasoned measured by PAM were revealed as 3.37 g/kg, 2.76 g/kg, 2.93 g/kg, 2.77 g/kg respectively.

  • In the past, interest in air pollution was concentrated on greenhouse gases, but in recent years, interest in fine dust has been increasing. The media and environmental organizations continue to emphasize air pollution caused by fine dust. The awareness of fine dust is increasing, and air pollution generated at ports is analyzed to be serious as a domestic factor excluding foreign inflows. Recognizing this, in order to reduce air pollution generated at ports, special laws on improving air quality, such as port areas, have been enacted in Korea, and attempts are being made to curb air pollution caused by ports. In this law, it is a policy that regulates air pollutants generated not only by ships but also throughout ports such as vehicles and unloading machines, and representative are ECA, VSR, and AMP. This study attempted to analyze the effects of these eco-friendly policies at Incheon Port. First of all, a study was conducted to calculate emissions assuming that there was no policy, analyze each policy, and finally calculate and compare actual emissions reflecting all policies. The methodology presented by the European Environmental Administration and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency was used, and pollutants to be analyzed were analyzed for sulfur oxides (SOX), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOX), total floating substances (TSP), fine dust and ultrafine dust (PM10, PM2.5) and ammonia (NH3). As a result of the analysis, it was analyzed that the actual emission reflecting all policies was about 4,097 tons/year, which had an emission reduction effect of about 760 tons/year compared to about 4,857 tons/year when the policy was not reflected. When the effects of each policy were analyzed individually, it was found that ECA 4,111 tons/year, VSR 4,854 tons/year, and AMP 4,843 tons of air pollutant emissions occurred The results of this study can be used as basic data and evidence for policy establishment related to the atmospheric environment at Incheon Port.

  • In this study, the weather conditions corresponding to the increase in the environmental concentration of fine dust (PM10) and ultrafine dust (PM2.5) from 2001 to 2019 in Jeju and Seogwipo cities were analyzed. The increase in the levels of PM10 and PM2.5 was observed in the order: spring > winter > autumn > summer. In both cities, PM10 and PM2.5 levels increased more frequently during the day in spring and summer and at night in autumn and winter, with PM2.5 showing a greater increase in concentration than PM10. The air temperature and wind speed corresponding with increased levels of PM10 were higher than their respective seasonal averages in spring and winter, but lower in summer and autumn. Relative humidity was lower than the seasonal average during all seasons. The air temperature variation corresponding with increased levels of PM2.5 showed the same seasonal trend as that observed for PM10. The relative humidity was higher than the respective seasonal averages in spring and summer, and lower in winter. The wind speed was lower than the seasonal average in both the cities. When the PM10 and PM2.5 levels increased, the wind direction was from the north and the west during the day and varied according to the season at night. The rate of the increase in the PM10 concentration was the highest in both cities at the wind speed of 1.6 - 3.4 ms-1 during the day and night except during night in the summer. The highest concentration of PM2.5 was observed with the wind speed range of 1.6 - 3.4 ms-1 in Jeju, and 0.3 - 1.6 ms-1 in Seogwipo. The results of this study applied to urban and landscape planning will aid in the formulation of strategies to reduce the adverse effects of fine particular matter.

  • The cooperative cost sharing scheme for Dust and Sand Storm(DSS) in North East Asia, as suggested in Song and Nagaki(2007), may not be feasible due to possible defection(s) of participating countries. If non-cooperative strategies are more plausible, Nash equilibrium can suggest possible outcomes of the cost sharing game. The result from the continuous strategy model shows that there exists an infinite number of Nash equilibrium such that the summation of investment from each country is always equal to the required budget of the ADS pilot project. It is also discussed that the discrete strategy model points to only 3 Nash equilibria in continuous strategy game outcome and the cooperative game solution may be just one of the infinite equilibria.

  • To select indicator insects, the abundance of which is one of the major criteria for the evaluation of agricultural environment, was designated and monitored in the three sites (Hongcheon A, B, and Yangpyeong) from 2001 to 2003. Characteristics of rice cultivation are usual cultivation with 2 or 3 times sprayed chemical agents per year in Hongcheon A site, duck cultivation with non-sprayed chemical agent, green manure and mowing in Hongcheon B site, and pond snail with non-sprayed chemical agent, green manure and mowing in Yangpyeong site. Dominant floral species are Digitaria ciliaris (Retz.) Koel., Persicaria thunbergii (Siebold & Zuccarini) H. Gross, Echinochioa crus-galli (L.) Beauvois, and Humulus scandens (Lour.) Merr. in Hongcheon A site, Digitaria ciliaris (Retz.) Koel., Persicaria thunbergii (Siebold & Zuccarini) H. Gross, and Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) Beauvois in Hongcheon B site, and Digitaria ciliaris (Retz.) Koel., Setaria viridis (L.) Beauv., and Persicaria langiseta (De Btuyn) Kitagawa in Yangpyeong site. Degree of green naturality (DGN) was higher in Hongcheon B site (2.0) and Yangpyeong site (3.6) than in Hongcheon A site (1.6). Number of species and individual of insects collected in the three sites were abundant on August and September. The species diversity was higher in Hongcheon B and Yangpyeong than in Hongcheon A. And Coleoptera was dominant in the all sites. The dominance index (DI) was the lowest, but diversify index (H'), evenness index (E) and richness index (RI) were the highest in Hongcheon B site. Based on three results, indicator insects for the evaluation of agricultural environment were selected as Dolichus halensis in Hongeheon A site, as Pheropsophus. javanus and Polionemobius mikado in Hongcheon B and Yangpyeong sites.

  • Background: $PM_{10}$(Particulate matter with a diameter ($<10{\mu}m$), which is characterized by different environmental conditions, is a complex mixture of organic and inorganic compounds. The Asian dust event caused by meteorological phenomena can also produce unique particulate matter in affected areas. This study investigated the cytokine produced by A549 epithelial cells exposed to particles collected during both the Asian dust pfenomenon and ambient air particles in a non-dusty period. Method: Air samples were collected using a high volume air sampler(Sibata Model HV500F) with an air flow at $500{\ell}/min$ for at least 6 hours. The cytokine messenger RNA(mRNA) was measured using a reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR). The A549 cells were exposed to 10 to $500{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ of a suspension containing $PM_{10}$ for 24 hours. Each was compared with those in the non-exposed control cells. Result: The mRNA levels of interleukin(IL)-$1{\alpha}$, $IL-I{\beta}$, IL-8, and the granulocyte macrophage colony stimulating factor(GM-CSF) increased after veing exposed to $PM_{10}$ in the ambient air particles, compared with those in the non-exposed control cells. The increase in $IL-1{\alpha}$ and IL-8 were dose dependent at a $PM_{10}$ concentration between $100{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ and $500{\mu}g/m{\ell}$. The mRNA level of IL-8 in the A549 epithelial cells was higher during the in the Asian dust period($500{\mu}g/m{\ell}$) than during the non dust period. Conclusion: A549 cells exposed to the $PM_{10}$ collected during the Asian dust period produce more proinflammatory cytokine than during non-dusty period. This cytokine enhances the local inflammatory response in the airways and can also contribute to the systemic component of this inflammatory process.

  • The three air quality monitoring sites, analysed simultaneously PM-10 and PM-2.5, ie. Ihyeondong in industrial area, Manchondong in residential area, Pyeongnidong in streetside, among 13 air quality monitoring sites in Daegu area, were investigated the concentration distribution characteristics of PM-2.5 and PM-10 in the last 2 years (2011~2012). PM-10 concentrations exceeded annual average reference value ($50{\mu}g/m^3$) in Ihyeondong ($52.5{\mu}g/m^3$) and Pyeongnidong ($60.9{\mu}g/m^3$) but satisfied in Manchondong ($44.9{\mu}g/m^3$). All PM-2.5 concentrations exceeded EPA annual standard value of the United States ($15{\mu}g/m^3$) in three points, but also exceeded new control annual standard value ($25{\mu}g/m^3$) coming into effect in 2015. Seasonal concentration of PM-10 appeared the order of spring > winter > fall > summer, and in the case of PM-2.5, the order was winter > spring > fall > summer. Monthly concentrations of PM-10 and PM-2.5 were highest in February and lowest in September. Diurnal concentrations of PM-10 and PM-2.5 increased from 7:00 AM, and recorded the highest concentration between 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM. And after 6:00 PM it lowered continuously and tended to show fixed concentrations from evening until early morning. In addition, the concentration of fine particles during the week was higher than the weekend. The fluctuation in industrial area was larger than the residential area. At the PM-2.5/PM-10 ratio, summer was generally high, spring was the lowest. And, when yellow sand occurred, it was 0.32 to 0.42. It was very low compared to 0.54 to 0.64 during non-yellow sand times. This paper for the state and the characteristics of Daegu' fine particles (PM-10, PM-2.5) will be valuable to future researches of fine particles and air pollution management.

  • In this study, Exit light installed in offices, malls, hospitals, and factories were analyzed to analyze the luminance performance of CCFL and LED light sources. In addition, fire protection products with electrical characteristics such as Exit light may change their performance due to ambient temperature, humidity, and dust. So it was extracted by installation place and analyzed its characteristics. As a result of the experiment, Exit light for CCFL type showed the value of 'ratio of luminance 2' for large, medium and small. Considering that the reference value was 'lower than 9', the value was very good and it can be seen that there is almost no change in ratio of luminance due to aging. The Exit light for LED type showed a value of 'ratio of luminance 5', which means that the light on the display surface is not uniform. In addition, there was almost no change in ratio of luminance due to ageing, but the ratio of luminance was larger than Exit light for LED type. This is an unsatisfactory result from a visual point of view. To improve this, it is necessary to disperse the light of LED light source and strengthen the regulation on ratio of luminance.

  • Mineralogical properties of two Asian dust (Hwangsa) samples collected during dust events in April 6 and 15, 2018 were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). XRD analyses showed that Asian dusts were dominated by phyllosilicates (62 wt%) comprising illite-smectite series clay minerals (ISCMs) (55%), chlorite (3%) and kaolinite (4%). Nonphyllosilicate minerals were quartz (18%), plagioclase (9%), K-feldspar (3%), calcite (3%), and gypsum (2-4%). Mineral compositions determined by SEM chemical analyses were consistent with XRD data. ISCMs occur as submicron grains forming aggregate particles or coating coarse mineral grains such as quartz, plagioclase, K-feldspar, chlorite, and calcite. The ISCMs are often associated with calcite nanofibers and gypsum blades. Mineralogical properties of 2018 dusts were similar to those of previous dusts although clay contents were higher than that of coarse 2012 dust.
