Supernumerary teeth are teeth added to the normal complement of teeth. They are most often found in the maxillary anterior region. Most supernumerary teeth in the maxillary anterior region have complications, such as impaction or malposition of permanent teeth, formation of diastema, cysts, and eruption into the nasal cavity or into the oral cavity. These complications have influence on deciding the treatment and its prognosis is depends on how these complications are treated. In clinical studies, it has been found that the removal of supernumerary teeth before the age of 5 years resulted in significant fewer eruption problems of the permanent tooth compared to removal at 7 years of age or later. However, such an early removal may leads to serious consequences of tooth development and behavioral management of patients. Therefore clinicians must consider complications of supernumerary tooth when deciding the time of removal. These cases report five-type of complication associated with supernumerary tooth such as diastema, delayed eruption, external root resorption, migration into nasal cavity and cyst formation.
Purpose : This study evaluated the impact of the presence and aspect of mandibular third molars to the mandible angle fracture or condyle fractures in Korean. Materials and Methods : A retrospective study was designed for patients attending the division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Kang-dong sacred heart hospital for treatment of mandibular fracture from January 2006 to September 2010. The primary variable was the presence of mandibular third molar and the secondary variable was the aspects of third molar impaction. Mandibular third molars were classified by the impaction depth and the available space as Pell & Gregory system. Outcome variables were the presence of mandibular angle fracture or condyle fracture. Also the source of trauma, age, sex were studied. Hospital charts, radiographs were used for study. Statistic analysis was done with descriptive statistics, the X2-test, linear-by-linear association. P value under 0.05 was considered significant statistically. Results : The number of involved patients was 86. The ratio of male to female patients was about 9:1 for angle fracture and 7:3 for condyle fracture. The most common source of trauma was assault for angle fracture and fall down for condyle fracture. The presence of mandibular third molar increased frequency of angle fracture and decreased condyle fracture with larger impaction depth. But available space of mandibular third molar did not show high association with angle or condyle fractures. Conclusion: Preventive extraction of mandibular third molar is recommended for patients with high risk of angle fracture. Male patients at their third decade or martial artists, police officer could be the case. But it is not recommended for patients with low risk of angle fracture and high risk of condyle fracture relatively. Elder female patients without any symptom on their third molar could be the case.

Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) has become widely available in recent years and is recognized as an important diagnostic tool for varies disease and condition of the orofacial structure. Clinician is easy to determine adequate treatment plan for pediatric patients by using CBCT. CBCT is used in Chonbuk National University Dental Hospital since 2005. This research presents clinical application of CBCT on patients visiting department of pediatric dentistry in Chonbuk National University Dental Hospital from Jan, 2005 to July, 2011. 1. Total number of patients taken CBCT is 252, and total number of area taken CBCT is 279. 2. An age group form 9 years to 12 years showing 53% was highest and percentage of 6~8 years showed 24%. 3. Chief complaints for CBCT taking are position and shape of impacted teeth (49.1%), mesiodens (19.4%), supernumerary teeth (7.9%), position and root canal shape of erupting teeth (7.2%), cyst (5.4%), inflammatory lesion (3.9%), odontoma (3.9%), tumor (2.2%), and et al. 4. Treatments are extraction (29.7%), orthodontic traction and leveling (24.0%), follow up (16.5%), refer to other professional part (11.5%), endodontic treatment (3.9%), surgical removal (2.9%), malsupialization (3.9%), enucleation (1.1%), and fail to follow up (5.0%), and et al.

A dentigerous cyst is the most common developmental odontogenic cyst. Patients with dentigerous cyst usually feel no pain or discomfort. If it is not treated, tooth eruption might not only be impeded, but also let the tooth translocate to the unusual area. So, early detection and appropriate treatment are important. Enucleation & marsupialization are the best options to treat a dentigerous cyst. Treatment plan depends on patient's age, health, preserve & protect of important structures, and sort of cyst. In these dentigerous cysts cases, by marsupialization and using obturator, affected tooth could be achieved spontaneous eruption into the dental arch even though they were badly dislocated.

Odontoma is defined as a benign odontogenic tumor containing enamel, dentin as well as cementum and constitued 22% of all odontogenic tumors. Although the lesions are commonly asymptomatic, they may be discovered routine radiographic examination. Odontomas often cause disturbances in the eruption of teeth such as, impaction or delayed eruption, retention of primary teeth, or abnomalities in the position of the teeth such as tipping or displacement of adjacent teeth. Radiologically, odontomas manifest as a dense radiopaque lesion surrounded by a thin radiotransparent halo. However, in some cases, radiopacity was not quite clear and images of the teeth shadowed very tiny odontomas. And at early development stages of odontoma, calcification remains immature and is difficult to diagnose on radiographs. This suggests that when delayed eruption of the teeth is found, periapical radiographs should be taken to clarify whether any small area of radiopaque material exists. This case report shows tiny odontomas involving an impacted tooth and crowding and we remove the tiny odontoma surgically.
Purpose : To investigate the actual conditions of diagnosis and treatment of oral disease of inpatient with systemic disease. Methods : A total of 110 subjects, inpatient due to systemic disease for diagnosis and treatment of oral disease was requested to answer the medical history and dental treatment record. Results : In the main systemic disease, Endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases is composed of Gingivitis and periodontal diseases 44.9%, Diseases of salivary glands 22.4%, Within Normal Limit, Dental caries 12.2%, Diseases of pulp and periapical tissues 4.1%, Embedded and impacted teeth, Other diseases of hard tissues of teeth 2%. In the main oral disease, Gingivitis and periodontal diseases is composed of Non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus 39.2%, Cerebral infarction 29.4%, Nerve root and plexus disorders 5.6%, Intracerebral hemorrhage 3.9%, Malignant neoplasm of stomach, Thyrotoxicosis, Schizophrenia, Alcoholic liver disease, Nephrotic syndrome 2%. Conclusion : These findings indicate that inpatient due to the systemic disease is significantly correlated to the oral disease. The patients of oral disease interrelationship between inpatient and outpatient of systemic disease should be validated by future research.

Purpose : We examined the relationships between the root curvatures of the mandibular third molars and their locations on the mandible, so that it might be contributed to elucidate the origin of the formation and development of the Korean mandibular third molar and help many clinicians to treat the mandibular third molars. Materials and Methods : Panoramic radiographs of 237 patients who had been treated at Korea University Ansan Hospital from March, 2000 to April, 2001 and had bilateral mandibular third molars were examined and analyzed. Results : There was no statistically significant difference between men and women (p<0.05). But there were significantly fewer subjects with bilateral curved roots in bilateral third molars regardless of their status (p<0.01) and were statistically significant differences between the groups with bilateral curved roots in the mandibular third molars with same status and with unilateral curved roots in the mandibular third molars with different status and between the groups with unilateral curved roots in the mandibular third molars with same status and with bilateral curved roots in the mandibular third molars with different status(p<0.05). Subjects with bilateral curved roots in the mandibular third molars with bilateral partial impacted status and with bilateral curved roots in the mandibular third molars with bilateral complete eruption status were significantly fewer (p<0.01) and subjects with the mandibular third molars with partial impacted and complete impacted status and with the mandibular third molars with complete erupted and partial impacted status had significantly fewer bilateral curved roots (p<0.05). Conclusions : When we postulate that it is genetic and environmental factors that affect the root formation, it seems that environmental factors have more effects on the formation of the mandibular third molars than on that of the mandibular first and second molars

Odontogenic keratocyst is classified as a developmental odontogenic cyst and is believed to arise from cell rests of the dental lamina. It accounts for 3% to 11% of all jaw cysts and they occur twice as often in the mandible as in the maxilla. Histologically, the cysts are lined by stratified, keratinizing, squamous epithelium. Daugther cysts or microcysts are often observed microscopically. The recurrence rate has been reported variously, but is known by its high recurrence rate. These lesions are more common in males than in females, occur over a wide age range and are typically diagnosed during the 2nd and 3rd decade. The diagnosis depends on the cyst’s microscopic features and is independent of its location and radiographic appearances. This cyst is a radiolucent lesion that is often multiloculated, has a smooth or scalloped border. The cyst is characteristically located in the body and ramus of the mandible, and often occurs in conjunction with an impacted tooth. This case report describes an odontogenic keratocyst on the lower right molar area of an 8-year-old girl. The cyst was removed under the general anaesthesia, and is being checked regularly for any recurrences.

Odontoma is the most common benign odontogenic tumors, and have been defined as mixed odontogenic tumor composed of epithelial and mesenchymal cells. Odontoma is believed to be hamartomatous rather than neoplastic in nature. The classification by WHO divides odontoma into 2 groups such as complex odontoma and compound odontoma. Compound odontoma comprises dental tissues, resembling the morphology of a tooth and has predilection for the anterior maxilla. In contrast, complex odontoma has unorganized mass, not resembling the normal tooth and has predilection for the posterior mandible. Odontoma is almost asymptomatic, so it is usually found on routine radiographic examination. Common presenting symptom is impacted or unerupted permanent teeth and retained primary teeth, but coexistent odontoma and congenital missing of permanent teeth is a very rare condition. The recommended treatment for an odontoma is conservative surgical excision, with care taken to remove the surrounding soft tissue. This report presents 2 patients with compound odontoma of the mandible who have congenital missing of the permanent teeth.
