  • This study was conducted to investigate the biological characteristics of Phanuromyia ricaniae (Hemiptera: Platygastroidea), an egg parasitoid of Ricania sp. (Hemiptera: Ricaniidae) as a biological control agent to control Ricania sublimata. The developmental period of P. ricaniae was 3.8 days for eggs, 11.1 days for larvae, and 16.3 days for pupae at 25℃, and 3.4 days for eggs, 7.8 days for larvae, and 15.3 days for pupae at 30℃. Except for the larval stage, the developmental periods were not significantly different, but the egg-to-pupa period at 30℃ was significantly shorter than that at 25℃. P. ricaniae emerged at the photophase in 24 hours, but not at the scotophase. A higher emergence rate (34.5%) was seen from 10:00 to 12:00 after the lights were turned. The female-to-male ratio of P. ricaniae was 3:1. The longevity of P. ricaniae adults was 49.0 days for females and 44.0 days for males at 20℃, 27.6 days for females and 28.4 days for males at 25℃, and 18 days for females and 14.0 days for males at 30℃. Its longevity at a low temperature (20℃) was longer than that at higher temperatures (25 and 30℃). Adult females laid eggs during all days except from 00:00-02:00 (scotophase time). The ovipositional distribution rate was 26.1% from 20:00 to 22:00, which was the peak, and the next peak was 15.7% at 10:00 to 12:00. P. ricaniae showed arrhenotokous parthenogenesis in which unfertilized eggs develop into males. Therefore, the results suggest that P. ricaniae may be a biological control agent for R. sublimata.

  • This study was initiated to find out the possible insect vector and other means of transmission of jujube witches'-broom disease. 1. Eight species of leafhoppers were found to feed on both healthy and diseased jujube trees. Among these, rhombic marked leafhoppers (Hishimonus sellatus Uhler) were most abundant throughout the growing season of jujube trees in all localities surveyed. H. sellatus was far more abundant on diseased trees than healthy ones. 2. Jujube witches'-broom mycoplasma(JWM) was transmitted to jujube seedlings by Hishimonus sellatus. Jujube seedlings inoculated with H. sellatus which had been fed for 14-21 days on diseased jujube plants, developed smaller, chlorotic leaves 40-60 days after inoculation. Electron microscopy of midveins and petioles of the infected jujube seedlings revealed the presence of numerous mycoplasmalike organisms in phloem tissues. 3. Jujube witches'-broom mycoplasma was also transmitted to Vinca rosea plants by H. sellatus. Infected Vinca rosea plants developed vein clearing and marginal chlorosis of upper leaves 25-38 days after inoculation and followed by stunting and ultimate wilting and death of plant. Electron microscopy of petioles and midveins of infected Vinca rosea plant revealed the presence of numerous mycoplasmalike organisms in phloem tissues. 4. H. sellatus survived more than 30 days on jujube, Vinca rosea, carrot, celery, eggplant, hop, Calystegia japonica, Humulus japonicus, Astragalus sinicus, white clover, red clover, and radino clover. Many second generation nymphs of H. sellatus were also abserved on these plants but clovers. 5. Jujube seeds collected from witches'-broom diseased jujube trees yielded healthy seedlings.

  • This paper presents a natural enemy complex of plant and leafhoppers in rice plants and a relationship between the host insects and their natural enemies. Feeding preference of major paddy spiders have been tested. To date, 32 species of natural enemies of plant and leafhoppers have been recorded, including 30 species of parasites and predators (15 parasitoids, 14 predators and nematode) and 2 species of insect pathogens. Some of species have shown great potential for controlling plant-leafhoppers populations; parasites, Anagrus nr. flaveolus, Gonatocerus sp., Haplogonatopus atratus and paddy spiders. Pirata subpiraticus and Gnathonarium dentatum. Plant and leafhoppers-natural enemy relationship have been observed in different developmental stages of the host insects. Pirata sub-piraticus is the most active to searching the host insects and also prefered nymphs to adults.

  • The insecticidal toxicities of seven essential oils against Ricania sp. nymph and adults, newly recorded pest, were evaluated using leaf-dipping and spray methods. At 72 h exposure time, the $LC_{50}$ values of the essential oils of Artemisia vulgaris, Anethum graveolens, Citrus paradisi, Melaleuca alternifolia, Melaleuca leucadendron, Neroli bigarade and Tagetes erecta were 251.02, 387.31, 286.21, 353.54, 275.64, 424.55, $165.68mg/cm^2$ when using the leaf dipping method against Ricania sp. nymphs, and 278.31, 402.11, 306.11, 379.64, 298.22, 459.56, $183.21mg/cm^2$ when using the spray method against Ricania sp. adults, respectively. These results indicate that the essential oil of the Tagetes erecta can be potentially used as new natural insecticidal agents against Ricania sp. nymph and adults.

  • In order to effectively control the Ricania sp., we investigated the light response to adults and developed an adult capturing device using light with superior attractiveness. The preference among six light sources such as daylight color, green, etc. for the Ricania sp. adult was favored with daylight color 97 > black 79 = red 79 = blue 79 > green 24 > yellow 13. We have developed an adult catching device using the most preferred daylight colors and behavioral habits of the Ricania sp.. The capture device consisted of two daylight compact lamps (30W, 20W), a yellow plate, and a catcher using water, and caught about 700 individuals a day. The capturing device has a large amount of capturing because adult is activity at high nighttime temperatures, but the capturing amount decreased significantly when the temperature dropped below 23℃. More than 85% of the Ricania sp. adults were trapped for 3 hours from 19:00 to 23:00. Therefore, it is considered that the adult capturing device for the control of Ricania sp. is used from mid July to late August when the night temperature is over 23℃, and lights up from 19:00 to 23:00.
