Assessment of Stabilization of An Open-dumping Landfill - A Case Study of Noeun Landfill - (비위생매립지의 안정화 평가 - 노은 매립지 사례연구 -)

  • 노은 매립지는 사용종료된지 5년이 경과된 비위생매립지로 최종복토는 되어 있으나 침출수 차집시설 및 매립가스 포집설비가 제대로 갖추어지지 않은 상태이다. 환경부의 사용종료 매립 지 정비지침에 의하면 침출수의 BOD/CODcr 비율이 1/10 수준임으로 침출수의 안정화 과정이 거의 완결상태로 진행되고 있는 것으로 판단된다. 매립지 가스의 안정화 측면에서는 CH4의 비 율이 5%정도이기 때문에 안정화가 거의 이루어진 것으로 볼 수 있다. 매립된 쓰레기 중에서 플 라스틱을 제외한 가연물 함량이 3.97 - 9.34%이기 때문에 매립폐기물은 안정화 기준에 미흡한 상태이다. 그리고 지하수는 대장균 항목이 지하수 수질기준 생활용수 기준에 미흡하여 안정화 기준을 충족시키지 못하고 있다. 노은매립지는 매립지 안정화의 속도가 평가 대상별로 상이하 게 진행되는 것으로 평가된다.

Development of Stability Index for Defining the End of the Post-closure Monitoring Period for MSW Landfill (폐기물매립지의 사후관리종료 평가를 위한 안정화 지수 산정에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop the stability index of landfill sites to assess it's degree of stability. In order to develop the stability index, field data including leachate qualities, Landfill gas (LFG) composition and element composition of wastes from 50 closed landfills were collected. Three parameters-BOD/CODcr among leachate quality parameters, $CH_4$ among landfill gases, and C/N ratio from wastes-were found to be the best parameters for measuring the stability of landfill sites. The trend line of these parameters were used to Also, $CH_4$ from landfill gases and C/N ratio from wastes were found to be the best parameters. The trend lines of these parameters were used to develop the stability index of landfill sites. The equation for the index was as following; $I_{LS}=S_L+S_G+S_W$ $S_L=-\{4.892+16.587{\cdot}ln[BOD/COD_{Cr]\}$ $S_G=53.872-12.782{\cdot}ln[CH_4]$ $S_W=79.382-20.013{\cdot}ln[C/N]$ (The maximum score for $S_L$, $S_G$, and $S_W$ was 33.3.) where, $I_{LS}$ : The stability index of the landfill $S_L$ : The stability score of the leachate $S_G$ : The stability score of the landfill gas $S_W$ : The stability score of the waste.

A Study on Variation of Landfill Gases in Completed Refuse Landfill Site after the Stabilization (사용종료 매립지의 지반안정화 후 매립가스의 변화)

  • The reclaimed waste layer in a completed refuse small landfill site was stabilized by JSP(Jumbo Special Pattern System) method. There were some variations of landfill gases(LFGs) after the stabilization. This study investigated the landfill gases emitted from a open dumping landfill site. We measured concentration of landfill gases before and after the construction, and 28 months later. As a result, the concentrations of $H_2S$ and $NH_3$ gases before the construction were 123.51ppm and 171.54ppm, respectively. These values were higher than TWA(Time Weighted Average) values. But the concentrations of $H_2S$ and $NH_3$ gases after the construction were 55.59ppm and 20.51ppm, and they also decreased 9.04ppm and 11.82ppm in 28 months. $CH_4$ and other landfill gases after the construction were little or a little detected in the landfill site. Hence we found out that concentrations or classes of landfill gases causing some problems extremely decreased by way of the stabilization.

  • Landfill and lysimeter experiments were conducted to estimate the optimum air injection method for the degradation of waste in landfill and the pre-stabilization. Continuous injection with low pressure and quantity can be effective for pre-stabilization of old landfill due to the lower contents of volatile solids in landfill. Air injection and landfill gas (LFG)extraction showed that the SVE (Soil Vapor Extraction) effect by air ventilation was more significant than the biodegradation of organics. Theses results suggested that they could accelerate the biological stabilization of organic waste in landfills. It is also expected that they would reduce the problems including gas emission during the landfill mining, separation and/or transportation to such levels that might be discharged directly to the atmosphere or with minimal treatment, if required.

  • In the stage of aftercare in waste landfill management, it is very difficult to estimate the decomposition of landfill waste by excavation which damages the low permeability layer. This study developed the method to analyze the amount of landfill waste degraded bio-chemically as the types of leachate and gas, and applied the method to Nanjido landfill(NL). Application result showed that 70% of high biodegradable waste in NL was transformed to gas and leachate by 2000. Also this study suggested that the transformed portions of waste name for "Decomposition Index" at that time and the proposed method must be modified according to the biological condition of waste degradation.

Reclamation of Closed Non-Sanitary Landfills by Sorting Transfer Control (선별이적처리를 통한 사용종료 비위생매립지 정비방안 연구)

  • The aim of this study was an evaluation of closed non-sanitary landfill's stabilization degree and a determination of its an optimal reclamation method. In order to evaluate the stabilization degree, physical compositions of landfill wastes in 21 closed non-sanitary landfills were analyzed. There were 4 major items such as cover soils, organics, combustibles and incombustibles. With respect to the results of physical compositions, it was determined that the waste in 9 sampling sites of closed non-sanitary landfills after 10years of the relief time was not fully stabilized. The closed non-sanitary landfills must be reclaimed as soon as possible. The main material in closed non-sanitary landfills was cover soils and the highest content was 89.96%. Otherwise, the contents in sanitary landfills was small and 9.89~11.12%. Therefore, it was evaluated that the recovered soil by sorting transfer treatment could be reused as on-site cover soils of the reclamating non-sanitary landfills and/or constructing materials.

  • A case study of the assessment for environmental stabilization in open dumping landfill site was carried out physical composition, total solid, moisture, and landfill gas(LFG) analysis in landfill site. The result of physical ratio were represented combustibles 23.64% and incombustibles 76.36%, TS 77.69%, VS 74.24%, FS 25.75%. The biodegradable organic matters were almost degraded and the result of the landfill gas showed that the $CH_4$ gas were measured as 4.5%. As the result of the assessment on the open dumping landfill it appears that this landfill is stabled for the maturation phase and formation $CO_2$ concentration lower than 15%.

  • 폐기물 매립지의 조기 안전화를 위해 여러 가지 Chemical Oxidation법이 개발되어 왔지만, 이 방법을 폐기물 매립지에 적용하고 난 후에 생성될 수 있는 부산물들이 주변 환경에 영향을 줄 가능성이 있다. 그래서, 이 방법을 실제 매립지에 적용하기 전에, 일본 키타큐슈에 있는 소각재가 묻혀 있는 모형 매립지에 다섯 가지 조건 -A, 콤포스트 추가; B, 과산화수소수 살수; 과산화수소수+공기주입; D, 공기주입; E, control- 을 적용하여 그 효능을 테스트하였고, 이 매립지에서 이 방법들의 적용 후에 생성되는 침출수의 급성 독성을 세 가지 microbiotests를 이용하여 monitoring하였다. 테스트 기간 중, 침출수의 수질은 개선되었고, 그 급성 독성은 점차적으로 감소하였다. 과산화수소수와 공기의 조합을 적용한 후 생성된 침출수의 급성 독성이 가장 빨리 감소하여 폐기물 매립지의 조기 안정화에 도움을 주었다. 이러한 독성 시험 결과는 몇 가지 화학적 parameters와 상관성이 있었고 여기에 사용된 급성 독성 테스트법은, 매립지 안정화를 위한 Chemical Oxidation법의 적용 후, 침출수 수질을 monitoring하는데 적절하였다. 그러므로 폐기물 매립지의 조기 폐지 기준에 독성 시험의 포함을 고려해 볼 필요가 있다고 생각한다.

  • The primary objective of this study is to develope an investigating method to identify spatial variability of plumes and contaminants at contaminated sites. The electrical resistivity method was used to characterize contaminated sites. This technique is expected to use actively at contaminated sites in order to remedy the contaminated sites in the future. It was studied by appling electrical resistivity method into contaminated wastes disposal sites and verified that it was suitable method for the contaminated site characterization.
