Evaluation of Landfilling Method of Organic Sludge from Mix of Pre-treated Organic Sludge and Municipal Solid Waste (전처리된 유기성오니와 생활폐기물 혼합에 따른 유기성오니 매립방법 평가)

  • This research was performed to evaluate the landfilling method of organic sludge from mix of pre-treated organic sludge (OS) and municipal solid waste(MSW). Organic sludges were dried, composted, and solidified as pre-treatment and the OS and MSW were mixed in ratios of 2 to 8 and 4 to 6. Approximately 1,800$\sim$2,500 L of landfill gas(LFG) was generated in the lysimeter with solidified-OS, which was higher than 1,150$\sim$1,650 L of the dried- and composted- ones. Maximum H$_2$S concentration was found in the following order : Composted-20(80 ppmv) > Composted-40(55 ppmv) > Dried-20(30 ppmv) > Dried-40 $\fallingdotseq$ Solidified-20 $\fallingdotseq$ Solidified-40 (20 ppmv). BOD$_5$ at initial leachate generation period was 38,000 mg/L for Composted-40, 28,000 mg/L for Dried-40, 26,000 mg/L for Dried-20, 21,000 mg/L for Composted-20 and Solidified-40, and Solidified-20 for 17,000 mg/L. In the final period of experiment, BOD$_5$ was low as 300$\sim$500 mg/L in the lysimeter with solidified-OS and MSW and showed 2,000$\sim$3,500 mg/L in dried- and composted- ones. As the results, landfilling by mix of solidified-OS and MSW was evaluated as the most appropriate method for biodegradable organics. Direct landfilling of OS is permitted for landfill site with CDM facility. Therefore, mixed landfilling of solidified-OS and MSW should be considered for much more LFG generation as methane.

  • Green infrastructure projects have the potential to reduce global warming and deliver sustainable energy solutions. Recently, the construction industry has been expanding their portfolios in New and Renewable (NRE) projects. However, the economic feasibility of NRE projects have not been validated and construction companies are not acquainted with their associated risks. This research performed a two-tiered feasibility study of the domestic projects registered for CDM in the UNFCCC. The first phase involved calculating the average IRR and NPV of the domestic CDM projects, which showed that their profitability to be very low. In the second phase, four NRE projects (Solar, Wind, Hydro, Landfill Gas) were selected and additional income generated from Feed-in-Tariff and CER sales were added to determine the improvements in the projects' IRR and NPV. Results indicate that Solar and Landfill Gas projects benefited the most from the two support mechanisms, while benefits to Wind and Hydro projects were minimal. While the Landfill Gas project had the highest IRR, the Wind project was the most investment attractive due to its NPV and minimal dependency on FiT and CER sales. Construction companies should enter into NRE projects with a long term view as related technologies mature.

Experimental Study of the Landfill Gas Fuelled Micro Gas Turbine Exhaust Gas Analysis (매립가스 마이크로가스터빈 배가스 분석에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • MGT fuelled by landfill gas was tested to asses feasibility of its exhaust gas application for $CO_2$ enrichment. The exhaust gas was analyzed during start-up and normal operation with different MGT load conditions. Due to the changes of air/fuel ratio and combustion mode, $O_2$, $CO_2$, CO and NOx concentration were varied within wide ranges during the MGT start-up. Especially, NOx emissioin level was increased up to 20.01 ppmv. Different tendencies of $O_2$, $CO_2$, CO and NOx concentrations were observed with MGT output changes. $O_2$ and CO concentrations were shown to be decreased and NOx and $CO_2$ concentrations were shown to have opposite trends. NOx emission level (0.8~1.88 ppmv) was very low compared to other types of combustion based power generation equipment. Unburned hydrocarbon emission level was substantially decreased with MGT load increase. Especially, $C_2H_4$ concentration was below the detection limit(0.2 ppmv) around the nominal load condition. The exhaust gas from landfill gas fuelled MGT system was shown to be feasible for $CO_2$ fertilization. Concentrations of major components were within or below the maximum allowable ranges.

  • 최근 자료에 의하면 우리나라의 온실가tm 총 배출량은 1990년을 기준으로 이산화탄소 6,927만 8천톤, 메탄 135만 2천톤, 아산화질소 1만 2천톤으로 추정되고 있다. 최근 증가 추세가 비교적 큰 것으로 알려진 메탄의 경우, 농업 분야와 폐기물매립 분야의 배출량이 전체 배출량의 80%를 차지하고 있다. 특히, 농업 분야의 산업 활동이 감소될 것으로 전망되고 있으므로, 폐기물 매립에 의한 메탄의 배출량은 그 비중이 더 커질 것으로 전망된다.(중략)

  • 매립지 내부에서 진행되는 혐기성 분해로 인한 폐기물의 부패현상은 일반적으로 악취와 관련한 직접적인 대기오염문제에서부터 메탄과 이산화탄소와 같은 온실기체의 발생 등과 같이 기후환경변화와 관련된 문제에 이르기까지 매우 심각한 오염원으로 인식되고 있다. 특히 매립지 내부의 가스상 오염물질들의 누적을 억제하기 위하여 설치하는 배출공에서는 이산화탄소나 메탄과 같은 온실기체 이외에도 약 80여 종에 이르는 다양한 휘발성유기화합물질 (Volatile Organic Compound, 이하 VOC) 성분들이 검출되기도 하였다 (Young and Parker, 1983).   • In this study, we offered the results of geophysical and geochemical survey on the municipal waste disposal area to delineate the size and extent of leachate contamination. Preliminary to intensive geochemical investigation, we performed two geophysical methods to characterize the survey area. Electromagnetic (EM) and magnetic method were used far site investigation. From the EM method, we can get the information of soil conductivity directly related to the leachate of the contaminations and from magnetic anomalies we can find the boundary of landfill which is not identified on the surface due to soil capping. The results of geophysical survey were well matched to those of geochemical method carried out inside and near the landfill. Electric conductivity (EC) of the groundwater sampled from low resistivity anomaly region of EM result was higher than background value and the border estimated from the magnetic survey showed good agreement with that estimated from the soil gas detection survey.
