  • A chronic wasting disease in a 10-month-old Thoroughbred filly is described. The filly presented with chronic colic, which was charactered by progressive loss of weight. Over a period of a couple of days the filly suffered from serious colic and subsequently. Post-mortem examination revealed the cecocolic intussusception as a total invagination of the cecum into the right ventral colon. It seems logical to assume this invagination occurred at the start of the illness. In addition, there were also Anoplocephalar perfoliata in the cecum and the right ventral colon.

  • In this report, we described a case of acute colic with uterine rupture in a Thoroughbred broodmare during parturition. A 14-year-old broodmare showed acute colic characterized by rolling just after delivering of a healthy foal. Large intestine was prolapsed through vulva, contaminated with soil and its serosa was heavily damaged. We performed a euthanasia according to the owner's request. Post mortem examination revealed about 15 cm rupture on ventral side of the uterus. In addition, the orphan foal follow his owner after necropsy on his dam.

  • In November 2012, a 4-month-old foal with anorexia, neurologic signs with ataxia and death was submitted for necropsy to the diagnostic laboratory of Jeju Self-Governing Provincial Veterinary Research Institute. Grossly, yellowish-white fibrinous materials were seen on the ventral cerebrum, cerebellum, medulla oblongata and cervical spinal cord of the foal. Histologically, severe fibrino-purulent meningitis characterized by the infiltration of neutrophils and fibrionous exudates with bacterial colonies were presented in cerebrum, cerebellum, brain stem and cervical spinal cord. In the bacterial isolation using meningeal exudate, the small white colonies on blood agar plate with ${\beta}$-hemolysis were observed. Isolated bacteria were Gram-positive cocci and confirmed as Streptococcus (S.) equi subsp. zooepidemicus by VITEK 2 system. Based on the histopathological features and the bacterial test, this case was diagnosed as meningitis associated with S. equi subsp. zooepidemicus infection in a foal. In our best knowledge, this is the first report for fibrino-purulent meningitis caused by S. equi subsp. zooepidemicus infection in Jeju.

  • The present study was conducted to investigate the pattern of fracture of 50 Thoroughbred foals in Jeju from January 1997 to August 2001. A total 50 Thoroughbred foals were investigated to figure out the relationship between breeding condition and fracture. The fracture was diagnosed by physical and radiological examinations after lameness test. Most sites of fracture were limb, skull and vertebrae. Age analyzed that the most popular is the 1-year-old foals. Most places of the occurrence of the fracture were pasture, paddock, track and stable. Main cause of the fracture were play, training and foal's dam. These results suggest that there were the 1-year-old foals have a lot of fracture during play at pasture in winter.

  • A variety of enteric deseases may result in the manifestation of abdominal pain in horse. An acute colic in a 5-month-old Thoroughbred filly is described. The filly was presented with acute colic characterized by rolling and pawing. Next day she suffered from severe abdominal pain and subsequently died. Post mortem examination revealed very heavy ascarid, Parascaris equorum (P. equrum) infection in cmall intestine. In addition, it is also noted the presence of P. equorum in the stomach. Infection due to P. equorummanifests itself in foals between 6-8weeks and one year of age. P. equorum is a common and ubiquitous parasite that persists for many years in stables and on pasture in spite of good hygiene and anthelmintic control programs.

  • Next to performing an expert physical examination, a blood sample submitted for a complete blood count is the most basic tool available to owners or veterinary practitioners. Reference values of complete blood count were determined at 6 different ages in 114 Thoroughbred foals during the second month of life. Hematologic results were as follows: RBC 8.2-10.5 ($10^6/{\mu}l$), Hb 10.9-13.3 (g/dl), HCT 28.2-35.2 (%), MCV 30.7-35.8 (fL), MCH 11.9-13.5 (pg), MCHC 37.9-40.5 (g/dl), RDW 24.5-25.7 (%), PLT 146.3-256.4 ($10^3/{\mu}l$), MPV 6.7-8.3(fL), total WBC 8.1-12.5 ($10^3/{\mu}l$), basophils 0.0 ($10^3/{\mu}l$), eosinophils 0.0-0.3 ($10^3/{\mu}l$), neutrophils 2.4-8.6 ($10^3/{\mu}l$), lymphocytes 1.8-2.9 ($10^3/{\mu}l$) and monocytes 0.0-1.4 ($10^3/{\mu}l$). The results of this study serve as reference ranges for Thoroughbred neonatal foals populations and can be useful for health control, regular examination and pre-sale soundness examination.

  • The most common abnormality of the umbilicus in the foal is the patent urachus. Patent urachus may be a congenital or acquired condition in foals in which the urachus fails to close spontaneously at or shortly after parturition. A 17-day-old male Thoroughbred foal was requested to the Veterinary Pathology Laboratory of Cheju National University. The foal showed clinical signs such as umbilical urination, anorexia, depression, lethargy, and abdominal pain for 10 days. Because of the umbilical urination, the surgery for patent urachus was performed, but he died next day. Grossly, many pale yellowish foci 10-20 mm in diameter were scattered on the throughout surface of lungs. Severe subcapsular hemorrhage was observed in left kidney. Large milky yellow mass 10X6-7 cm in size was found in the adjacent area of right kidney. Histopathologically, many abscesses with bacterial cocci were scattered in the blood vessels or adjacent pulmonary parenchyma of lungs. Severe numerous abscesses with intralesional bacterial cocci were mostly occupied in the abdominal mass from right kidney. Gram staining for tissue sections demonstrated numerous Gram positive cocci in pulmonary and abdominal abscesses. In bacterial culture, catalase-positive beta-hemolytic colonies were isolated and confirmed as Staphylococcus (S.) aureus by Vitek system. Based on the results, acquired patent urachus and then multiple abscesses may be originated from the umbilical cord infected with S. aureus in this foal.

  • This work described 3 infection cases caused by Rhodococcus equi in foals between 3 and 5 months of age. The disease histories were not fully taken from local veterinarians. At least 1 sick foal has been treated with cephalothins followed by penicillins during approximately 1 week, but died without effectiveness and other foals rearing with the animal have been suffering from severe pneumonia which show high fever, laboring respiration, cough and/or nasal discharge. There were many abscessations into lungs of 2 foals in postmortem examination and another 1 sample was pus collected from abscess around the shoulder, indicating the osteomyelitis. Those bacteria were grampositive coryneform and were identified as a R. equi by a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using primers for R. equi-specific vapA gene. The pathogens were usually resistant to penicillin, ampicillin, amoxycillin/clavulanic acid, cefazolin, clindamycin, sulfamethoxazol/trimethoprim, kanamycin, and tetracycline, while were sensitive to ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, orfloxacin, gentamicin, erythromycin, neomycin, and vancomycin. Some more foals with respiratory symptoms in 1 horse farm were treated by orally administration with erythromycin during 2 weeks. Because the combination of erythromycin and rifampin has recommended as the treatment for R. equi infections in foals, the local equine veterinarian can choose those antibiotics for the treatment of this disease in future. However, another antimicrobial agent may be necessary if R. equi resistant to both agents is isolated.

  • The considerable researches have been done on the change,1 associated with age in the blood picture of domestic animals, but a survey has not been of the blood picture in Thoroughbred fears in Korea. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to outline the range of values in clinically not\\\\`- mal Thoroughbred foals. Some blood chemical parameters from 3 days to 8 weeks of age were exam-ined to obtain normal values in Thoroughbred foal7. Blood samples were obtained from the jugular vein in 11 Thoroughbred foals and collected at 3 days, and at 1,2,4 and 8 weeks of age, respectively. The results obtained ill this study were summarized as follows: The packed cell volume (PCV) at 4 weeks of age was significantly lower than that at 3 days of age (P<0.01) and that al 2 and 8 weeks of age were straightly lower than that at 3 days of age (P<0.05). The total protein (TP) at 8 weeks of age was higher than that at 3 days, 1 and 2 weeks of age (P<0.05). The activity of aspartate ami-notransferase (AST) at 2,4 and 8 weeks of age were significantly higher than that at 3 days of age (P<0.01). The total bilirnbin showed a tendency to decrease gradually according to the weeks and that at 2,4 and 8 weeks of age were significantly lower than that at 3 days of age (P<0.01). The BUN at 1 and 8 weeks of ago were lower than that at 3 days of age (P<0.05). The concentration of Ca at 1 week of alee was higher than that at 3 days of age (P<0.05). The vitamin A and vitamin E showed a tendency to decrease gradually from 3 days to 4 weeks of age and increased slightly at 8 weeks of age.

  • A 6-month-old male thoroughbred foal with melting ulcer after left eye trauma was referred to Equine Hospital of Jeju National University. The left eye did not respond to the menace reflex test. Bacteria were not observed on corneal smear and culture test, and fluorescein staining revealed corneal injury. Subpalpebral Lavage (SPL) catheter was installed through the upper left eyelid. And the antibiotics, mydriatic and antifungal agents were administered using SPL. In addition, temporary tarsorrhaphy was performed and a hard cup hood was applied. After 2 weeks, the temporary tarsorrhaphy was removed and severe corneal neovascularization was found. On the 39th day of treatment, the left eye was responding to the menace reflex test and granular tissue formation was confirmed in the ulcer area. During the 2 months follow-up, we found that the granulation tissues decreased significantly. This case report describes a successful recovery of severe melting ulcers in a foal by intensive treatment.
