Over the years the investigation of behaviour of piles in groups connected to a cap in consolidating soil has attracted far less attention than the study of isolated piles in groups. In this paper, a series of three-dimensional numerical simulations have been performed to study the behaviour of pile groups connected to a cap in consolidating ground. Both elastic no-slip and elasto-plastic slip analyses were considered. Based on the analysis results, when piles were connected to a cap, tensile forces were developed near the pile head at the outer piles. Elastic solution and no-slip analysis over-predicted the tensile force near the pile head for outer piles. Relatively speaking, the number of piles in a group is more important than the pile spacing in terms of the influence of negative skin friction on the pile behaviour. The issue on the development of tensile forces on the pile head at the outer piles is perhaps needed to be carefully considered in the pile design to prevent the damages of the pile-cap connection.

In the conventional design of a piled raft, the axial resistance offered by the raft itself is typically neglected and only that of the group pile is accounted in estimating the total axial resistance of the piled raft. As a consequence, piled rafts are usually designed conservatively by neglecting the raft resistance. In this study, a series of centrifuge model tests have been performed to compare the axial behavior of a group pile with that of a piled raft (both having 16 component piles with an array of $4{\times}4$) in sands with different relative densities and in clays with different preconsolidated pressures. The test results revealed that, with respect to the allowable settlement of 25 millimeters for bridge foundations, the piled raft resistances were greater than those of the group pile by 13% for dense sand, by 22% for loose sand, by 30% for stiff clay, and by 22% for soft clay. Furthermore, the ratio of piled raft resistance to group pile resistance increased as the settlement increased.
In this study, the axial stiffness of reinforcing piles (Kvr) for the vertical extension remodeling structures was estimated through 3D finite element analysis. In the computation of the minimum required axial stiffness of reinforcing piles, proposed maximum axial stiffness of old and deteriorated existing piles (Kve) based on theoretical and experimental approaches will be applied. Through this, the required increase rate of axial stiffness of reinforcing piles in order to support the increased structural loading was proposed for end-bearing and friction piles by different slenderness ratio (L/D). The numerical model was validated by comparing the computed results with actual field measurements. Based on the computed results, it was concluded that the end-bearing reinforcing pile needs 44% - 67% increase in axial stiffness to deal with the deterioration of existing piles and support the additional structural load due to vertical extension remodeling.
It is generally considered that differences of axial stiffness between exiting pile and reinforcing pile affect the load distribution ratio during vertical extension remodeling. But there are few cases to verify the effect of stiffness by field load test on load distribution ratio in Korea. In this paper, a series of load tests for micropiles were carried out to evaluate the effect of axial stiffness on the load distribution ratio. First, different types of micropiles were constructed so that conventional micropiles simulated existing piles and waveform micropiles simulated reinforcing piles. Secondly, load tests were performed to evaluate the stiffness of each piles. After then, the raft was installed to make a piled raft system and load tests were applied on foundation to verify the effect of axial stiffness on the load distribution ratio. The experimental results show that the stiffness of waveform micropiles were 2.5 times larger than that of conventional micropiles, and the load distribution ratio between existing and reinforcing piles was increased according to axial stiffness of piles.
In case of using pile foundation to support bridge abutments on soft ground, the soft ground often causes serious troubles such as lateral movement of the bridge abutments. The foundation piles in soil undergoing lateral movement is one of the typical passive piles. However, Generally, on design of the piles for abutments, the piles have not been considered as a passive piles; sofar:. Because it is difficult to assess the effect of the lateral movement on the desigin and reasonable design method is not established yet. In this study, several abutments, of which lateral movement was taken place, was investigated. Based on the investigation a criterion was presented to assess the lateral movement of the soft soil under backfill for abutment. By use of the criterion, the lateral movement of abutment could be predicted. As the results of thin study, it was anon that the lateral movement of abutment could be occured when the safety factor of slope stability is lese than either 1.5(without the pile effect) or 1.8 (with the pile effect). Especially, excessive lateral movements were occurred when the safety factor of slope stability is less than either 1.0(without the pile effect) or 1.1 (with the pile effect).
In this study, in-depth site investigation related to design and construction of pile foundation was carried out, especially with respect to 103 large-scale bridges located in South Korea. As a result, the depths and location of investigation was unsatisfactory at the foundation investigation process. Moreover, pile load tests were not performed when the capacity of the file is calculated in planning phase, and it was difficult to determine the load capacity limit due to the fact that loading capacity was not specified in pile-loading test. The design criteria related to pile foundation does not reflect the reality of the construction site, and that causes over design, and economic inefficiency in budget. Therefore, the purposes of this study is to review case studies related to the bearing capacity of pile foundations and suggest improvements in the construction specifications.
Finite element method was used to compare un-piled and piled raft foundation behaviors on sandy soils in this study. The soil parameters were estimated from SPT tests of 25 boreholes. Based on these soil parameters, a finite element analysis was conducted on un-piled and piled raft foundations. For the un-piled raft, the normalized settlement parameter for raft sizes of $8m{\times}8m$ and $15m{\times}15m$ ranged from 1.02~1.15 and 0.64~0.81, respectively. The raft thickness affects differential settlement and bending moments, but has little effect on load sharing or maximum settlement. Pile spacing greatly affected the maximum settlement, the differential settlement, the bending moment in the raft, and the load shared by the piles, while the differential settlement, the maximum bending moment and the load sharing are not affected very much by increasing the pile lengths.
The negative skin friction on piles, which are installed in currently consolidating soft deposits, creates significant problems on the stability of pile foundations. This study investigated whether or not the pile foundation designs were appropriate in soft deposits with large amount of consolidation settlement. The final settlements of the grounds along the pile depth were estimated by the soil parameters obtained from the laboratory tests and by the field-measured settlement curves, if they were available. The displacement of the piles along the pile depth was estimated by both the load transfer method and the numerical method. Both methods gave similar locations of neutral planes and magnitudes of the maximum axial forces on the piles. The movements of the ground and the piles were compared to calculate the down drag acting on piles. For the piles whose bearing capacities were less than the design loads including the down drag, slip layer coatings and/or incrementing of the pile penetration depth into the bearing stratum were proposed to improve the pile capacities.

This paper presents the results from three-dimensional finite element (FE) analysis undertaken to provide insight into the lateral behaviors of piled gravity base foundation (GBF) for offshore wind turbine. The piled GBF was originally developed to support the gravity based foundation in very soft clay soil. A GBF is supported by five piles in a cross arrangement to achieve additional vertical bearing capacity. This study considered four different cases including a) single pile, b) three-by-three group pile (with nine piles), c) cross-arrangement group pile (with five piles), and d) piled GBF. All the cases were installed in homogenous soft clay soil with undrained shear strength of 20 kPa. From the numerical results, p-y curves and thus P-multiplier was back-calculated. For the group pile cases, the group effect decreased with increasing the number of piles. Interestingly, for the piled GBF, the P-multipliers showed a unique trend, compared to the group pile cases. This study concluded that the global lateral behaviour of the piled GBF was influenced strongly by the interaction between GBF and contacted soil surface.
The dynamic behavior of the group piles supporting the superstructure in an earthquake is influenced by different complex dynamic mechanisms by the inertia force of the superstructure and the kinematic force of the ground. In an earthquake, The dynamic p-y curve is used to analyze the dynamic behavior of the pile foundation in consideration of the interaction of the ground, pile foundation, and superstructure due to the inertia force and the kinematic force. Most of the research has been conducted in order to confirm the dynamic p-y curve of the pile foundation by applying to the pile foundation installed on the single layered ground consisting of sand and clay, but the research for the multiple layered ground is insufficient. In this study, 1g shaking table tests were conducted to analyze the effect of the strata ratio of the top and bottom ground of the two layered sandy ground which has different relative densities on the dynamic behavior of group piles supporting the superstructure. The result shows that the maximum acceleration in the ground, the pile cap, and the superstructure increases as the strata ratio increases, and the location of the maximum bending moment of the pile foundation is changed. In addition, it was confirmed that the slope of the dynamic p-y curve of the pile foundation increased and decreased according to the strata ratio.
