This study describes the evaluation results of pile length ratio and N value on the bearing capacity of drilled shafts in cohesionless soil. The bearing capacity ratio in Meyerhof's formula is affected only by the length ratio, and it is equally evaluated a sharing ratio of the end bearing capacity and the skin friction. NAVFAC's formula shows that the pile length influences both end bearing capacity and the skin friction, but pile length is also found to be a more influence factor on the end bearing capacity. Especially, it was found that the effect of pile length factor was larger than the effect of N value and pile diameter. FHWA's formula was evaluated to reflect the influence factor by skin friction more positively than other formulas at calculation the bearing capacity. It was also confirmed that the influence of the skin friction is larger when the ultimate bearing capacity is evaluated.
Analytical studies on piles so far have been directed toward prediction of bearing capacity under vertical loads. Various static and dynamic formulas have been used in predicting the ultimate bearing capacity of a pile. Further, the reliability of these formulas has been verified by comparing the predicted values with the pile load test measurements. Accordingly, by means of the ultimate load from the data measured by the actual field load tests of PHC piles, safety factors were compared and analyzed static and dynamic formula methods applying to 4 different sites. As a result, the safety factor by Meyerhof formula method indicates 3.0 and the safety factor by Hiley formula method indicates 5.0.
The purpose of this study is to propose safety factors of pile bearing capacity based on the reliability analysis. Each prediction method involves various degrees of uncertainties. To account for these uncertainties in a systematic way, the ratios of the measured bearing capacity from pile load tests to the predicted bearing capacity are represented in the form of a probability density function. The safety factor for each design method is obtained so that the probability of pile foundation failure is less than 10-3. The Bayesian theorem is applied in a way that the distribution using static formulae is assumed to be the A-prior and the distribution using dynamic formulae or wave equation based methods is assumed to be the likelihood, and these two are combined to obtain the posterior which has the reduced uncertainty. The results of this study show that static formulae of the pile bearing capacity using the 5.p.7. N-value as well as dynamic formulae are highly unreliable and have to have the safety factor more than 7.4 : the wave equation analysis using PDA(Pile Driving Analyzer) system the most reliable with the safety factor close to 2.7. The safety factor could be reduced certain amount by adoption the Bayes methodology in pile design.

In the conventional design of a piled raft, the axial resistance offered by the raft itself is typically neglected and only that of the group pile is accounted in estimating the total axial resistance of the piled raft. As a consequence, piled rafts are usually designed conservatively by neglecting the raft resistance. In this study, a series of centrifuge model tests have been performed to compare the axial behavior of a group pile with that of a piled raft (both having 16 component piles with an array of $4{\times}4$) in sands with different relative densities and in clays with different preconsolidated pressures. The test results revealed that, with respect to the allowable settlement of 25 millimeters for bridge foundations, the piled raft resistances were greater than those of the group pile by 13% for dense sand, by 22% for loose sand, by 30% for stiff clay, and by 22% for soft clay. Furthermore, the ratio of piled raft resistance to group pile resistance increased as the settlement increased.
In our country, in the case of traditional design of pile foundations, only a design depending on end bearing has been performed. However, through the load transfer measurement data that have been carried out for in-situ piles, it was known that skin frictional force was mobilized greatly. In this study, through the analysis of the load transfer test cases of driven steel pipe piles and large-diameter drilled shafts, load bearing aspects of pile foundation depending on pile construction methods and pile load test methods were established. The average sharing ratios of skin frictional force were independent of pile types, pile load test methods, relative pile lengths, pile diameters and soil types. Because the average sharing ratios were over 50%, the case pile foundations mostly behaved as a friction pile and the extremely partial case pile foundation behaved as a combined load bearing pile.
The rotate penetration pile is a type of displacement pile: the surrounding soil is displaced when installing the pile, and the pile can exert a large bearing power and pullout force. In addition, it uses displaced soil method that does not generate slime, and its applications are increasing in foreign countries owing to the environmentally friendly characteristics such as small noise and vibration. However, mostly driven piles-which are directly driven to the ground, and bored pile- pre-fabricated piles are buried to prebored underground, are used; however, rotate penetration piles still have limited use. Most of the laboratory tests have been carried out until now to identify the support behavior after installation of piles and ground construction, the evaluating the support behavior is lacking due to the rotation intrusive process of the rotate penetration piles. Therefore, this study used indoor experiments simulating rotation intrusive process in weathered soil, to evaluate the bearing power behavior for the weathered soil, varying the diameter of the helical bearing plates, helical bearing plate spacing, number of the helical bearing plates, and helical bearing plate specifications. As the outcome of this study, the helical pile bearing power evaluation results, change in bearing power in accordance with main specifications, and review on the comparative analysis with the existing theories were provided.
Granular compaction piles increase the load bearing capacity of the soft ground and reduce the settlement of fecundation built on the reinforced soil. Also the granular compaction piles accelerate the consolidation of soft ground using the granular materials such as sand, gravel, stone etc. However, this method is one of unuseful methods in Korea. In the present study, the estimation procedure for the ultimate bearing capacity of randomly installed granular compaction pile group is proposed. Also, carbon rod tests have been peformed for verifying the group effect of granular compaction piles and the behavior characteristics such as bulging failure zone on granular compaction piles. From the test results, it is found that bulging failure shape of granular compaction piles was conical shape and the ultimate bearing capacity increased as the spacing of piles became gradually narrow. Also, from the proposed method in this study, the optimal locations of granular compaction piles with various installed cases are analyzed. The results were shown that the bearing capacity was increased in the case concentrated on the central part of pile group.
Axial behavior of tapered piles is affected by taper angle, stress state of soils, soil frictional angle and pile-soil interface friction angle. In this paper, a series of model pile load tests were performed using a calibration chamber in order to investigate the effect of taper angle on the axial response of cast-in-place tapered piles in sand. According to results of the tests, as taper angle of piles increased, the shaft load capacity of piles increased but its base load capacity decreased. The unit base load capacity of piles increased with increasing taper angle for medium sand but decreased for dense sand. The ratio of shaft to total load capacity increased with increasing taper angle and with decreasing relative density of soils. The test results also showed that total load capacity per unit pile volume increased with increasing taper angle for medium sand, but it decreased for dense sand. Therefore, it can be stated that tapered piles are economically more beneficial for medium sand than for dense sand.
Performance improvement of helical piles in static load tests using hexagon joints that do not require welding or bolting was investigated. Two sites were selected for pile field tests to evaluate their bearing capacity. Static and pull-out load tests were undertaken to assess the method for estimating bearing capacity. The field tests indicated that the bearing capacity of the gravity grout pile was ≥600 kN in the static load test, consistent with the AC 358 Code. The non-grout pile had a bearing capacity of ≤600 kN, suggesting that gravity grouting is required. Field pile load-test results were used to establish the bearing capacity equation, based on a small number of helical pile.

In this study, artificial neural network is applied to the evaluation of bearing capacity of the PHC auger-drilled piles at sites of domestic decomposed granite soils. For the verification of applicability of error back propagation neural network, a total of 168 data of in-situ test results for PHC auger-drilled plies are used. The results show that the estimation of error back propagation neural network provide a good matching with pile test results by training and these results show the confidence of utilizing the neural networks for evaluation of the bearing capacity of piles.
