  • In Recent experimental research results of connection method between steel pipe pile and concrete footing are provided based on various experimental observations. It gives a shedding light toward developing better connection method for steel pipe pile at the field application. In this study, the newly developed method is tested for compressive, pull put and combination load including moment with carefully designed monitoring system. The measured data show that new method have at least equivalent or better load resistant capacities compared with those of specified method in Korea Road Design Specification. It is also tried to define and investigate the load transfer mechanism for new method.

  • Present bonding methods which connect steel pipe and spread footing in pile foundation have been generally used. These methods however showed lots of difficulties in the quality control. A new bonding method, which is called 'Bolted Bonding Method(BBM)' , is developed. This method uses factory-made parts so that it may increase the degree of quality, and workability, and is being adopted in the Held concerned. The method is verified by the structural analysis and laboratory test and then a new design formula is proposed. In addition, a comparison test of the present methods and BBM are conducted to observe the applicability and economy of the latter. As results, it is observed that BBM shows 5 to 10 times faster in Held work and 9% to 50% cheaper in construction cost than the existing methods.

  • To analyze the lateral load-deflection behavior of steel-concrete composite drilled shafts, a series of lateral pile load tests were performed. The test results were compared with the results from various analytical methods for lateral pile behaviors using the coefficients of subgrade reaction ($k_h$) estimated by pressuremeter test (PMT) and standard penetration test (SPT). As a result, it was found that the analytical methods using the $k_h$ estimated by SPT N value were not suitable for evaluating the pile head lateral load-deflections of the piles within the allowable deflection. However, the methods using the $k_h$ calculated from PMT were able to represent the initial lateral behavior at the head of the piles fairly well. Also, the method by the pressuremeter curve, which was applied directly to the p-y curve of the piles, offered a reasonable lateral behavior estimation by applying the correction factor to the pile materials.

  • Analytical solutions for laterally loaded piles were derived. Critical pile length which can be considered as the length for behaving as long pile was investigated varying with densities of sandy soils. Lateral behaviors obtained from analytical solution and numerical solution were also investigated. Non-dimensional critical pile lengths obtained from analytical solutions for three types of pile head boundary conditions were 2.3~3.2. By comparing analytical solutions with numerical solutions, distribution of pile deflection and that of moment were similar and it can be seen that pile head deflection obtained by analytical method is conservative. And the values of moments were not too different between analytical solution and numerical solution.

  • The conventional pile cap reinforcement systems regulated in the design specifications have some restrictions in design and construction such as disposition of reinforcing bars, insurance of anchoring length of reinforcements and requirement of shear key. This study suggests a new type of steel pipe pile cap system with perforated rib shear connector as an alternative to the conventional pile cap system for the improvement in structural performance and simplification of construction. And, experimental results of push-out are scribed for the evaluation of structural performance of the new pile cap system and it was compared to the structural behavior of conventional pile cap system.

  • Piles of a bridge pier are connected with the column through the pile cap (footing). Behavior of the pile foundation can be different according to the connection method between piles and the pile cap. Connection methods between pile heads and the pile cap are divided into two groups : rigid connections and hinge connections. Domestic design code has been specified to use rigid connection method for the highway bridge. In the rigid connection method, maximum bending moment of a pile occurs at the pile head and this helps the pile to prevent the excessive displacement. Rigid methods are also good to improve the seismic performance. However, some specifications prescribe that conservative results through investigations of both the fixed-head condition and the free-head condition should be reflected in the design. This statement may induce an over-estimated design for the bridge which has high-quality structures with casing covered drilled shafts and the PC-house contained pile cap. Because the assumption of free-head conditions (hinge connections) is unreal for the elevated pile cap system with multiple piles of the long span sea-crossing bridges. On the other hand, elastic displacement method to evaluate the pile reactions under the pile cap is not suitable for this type of bridges due to impractical assumptions. So, full modeling techniques which analyze the superstructure and the substructure simultaneously should be performed. Loads and stress state of the large diameter drilled shaft and the pile cap for Incheon Bridge which will be the longest bridge of Korea were investigated through the full modeling for rigid connection conditions.

  • Some methods are presented to estimate the ultimate lateral resistance of single active piles subjected to lateral loads above the ground surface, considering the lateral soil reaction, the pile length and the fixity condition of a pile head. The lateral soil reaction acting on a single active pile embedded in soil due to pile movement can be estimated by use of a theoretical equation which is derived by considering especially the plastic state of ground surrounding the pile and the pile- section shape. The piles are named short or long depending upon the relative magnitude of the induced bending moment to the yielding moment. As for the fixity condition of a pile head, the free head and the unrotated head are considered. Comparison with other experimental results gives that the calculated ultimate lateral resistance obtained by the author's theory is closer to experimental results than the one obtained by Brom's theory.

  • Due to the economic growth and development of construction technology, a role of foundation to resist heavy loads has been increased. In this present study to improve the structural performance of reinforced concrete pile, the precast HPC pile reinforced with rebar and filling concrete was developed and the strength of pile was predicted based on the limit state design method. The safety of HPC pile strength was evaluated by comparing with the design values. The geometry of HPC pile is a decagon cross section with a maximum width of 500 mm and a minimum width of 475 mm, and the hollow head of pile thickness is 70 mm. The inner area of the hollow head part was made as the square ribbed shape presented in the limit state design code in order to achieve horizontal shear strength between pile concrete and filling concrete. From the shear test results, it was found that the stable shear strength were secured without abrupt failure until maximum load stage despite the shear cracks was found. Shear strength is 135% and 119% higher than that of design value calculated from limit state design code. The driving test results of HPC pile according to the presence of additional reinforcement showed the outstanding crack resistance against impact loads condition. From the bending test results the flexural load between PHC pile and HPC pile was 1.51 times and 1.48 times higher than that of the design flexural load of conventional PHC pile.

  • Various kinds of shear connectors such as headed stud, channel, perforated steel plate and others are commonly used to transfer stress and conduct composite performance in steel concrete composite structures, and many researches have been conducted to improve the characteristics of different types of shear connectors. It is focused in this study on the pull-out and pushout performance of steel pipe pile cap with the open type perfobond for the composite connection to the spread footing. A parameter analysis was conducted, using ABAQUS, a nonlinear finite element analysis program, to obtain data for determining the characteristics of the structure and to allow various parametric analyses of steel pipe cap with the open perfobond.

  • Among several methods for determining the allowable lateral resistances of piles, the subgrade reaction method and ultimate lateral resistance method are generally used. To determine the effects of the soil conditions, pile head restraint conditions, and pile lengths on determining the allowable lateral resistances of piles, computations of the allowable lateral resistances of piles using the two methods were executed, and the computation results were compared. For piles in soft cohesive soil, the pile design is governed by the allowable lateral resistance of a pile from subgrade soil reaction method regardless of the pile head restraints conditions and pile lengths. The allowable lateral resistance of a pile from the ultimate lateral resistance governs the design as the undrained shear strength increases. Except for the case of a short pile, which is installed in loose granular soil, the allowable lateral resistance of a pile from ultimate lateral resistance governs the design of laterally loaded piles. According to this study, computation of the ultimate lateral resistance of a pile is needed, even though some opinions suggest that the design of a laterally loaded pile is satisfied only by the subgrade reaction method. The pile width barely influences the coefficient of horizontal subgrade reaction. Realistically, the effect of the pile width can be disregarded in the condition of common pile widths of 20~90cm.
