  • Korean angelica(Angelica gigas Nakai), a oriental medicinal plants is important and in great demand in Korea. This crop is a biennial which is to die after flower, so as could not harvest the root. A new variety 'Anpung' was developed from the selection of the local collecting population by medicinal crop team at NCES in 2001. This showed stable bolting during its cropping year and have high quality and yield potential. The color is greenish purple in stem and red purple in flower. It was longer in plant height and root length, thicker in root diameter, more leave and latheral roots comparing with the check variety 'Manchu'. The dry root was 72 g/plant showing heavier than check variety of 65 g/plant. It showed such low bolting rate as 0.5%, on the other hand 49.3% in landrace when it cultured by transplanting with heating nursery seedlings, and $0{\sim}15%$ with field nursery seedlings. The dry root yield of the variety was averaged 3,630 kg/ha out yielding the check variety by 11% at the three regional yield test from 1999 to 2001. Finally, 'Anpung' showed higher content of extracts up to 46.3% in 'Anpung' and 45% in check variety, decursin and decursinol contents was 3.48% and 2.79%, showing slightly higher than check variety.

  • This study was carried out to determine plant growth and bolting characteristics of Angelica gigas. Three varieties and/or lines Manchu bolting resistant variety, AGJ90-1 medium type line, and bolting Jinbu local were used for field trial in Suwon. FIve different transplanting times were applied on March 25, April 5, April 15, April 25, and May 5th. Survival rate was decreased by the delayed transplantation and it affected after April 25th respectively. Plant growth by the early transplantation showed the best growth during the beginning stage and recognized signifiquence but not by the late transplantation. Bolting rate revealed severe different by the variety and line, it ranged from $10{\sim}8.1%$ of Manchu, $5.9{\sim}20.3%$ of AGJ90-1, and $58.5{\sim}74.6%$ of Jinbu local clearly. By the treatment of transplantation time bolting rate was different, early plantation showed high bolting rate compare to the late plantation from the all of tested variety and lines. Bolting response according to the transplanting time, bolting resistant variety showed insensibility and boling line showed sensitive response. In Manchu root yield was best when planted on April 5th as 389 kg /10a, in case of AGJ90-1 was determined 377 kg/10a when planted on April 15th, and Jinbu local root yield was showed 133 kg/10a planted on April 25.

  • Six strains among the shiitake varieties developed by the National Institute of Forest Science were used to select suitable varieties for sawdust block cultivation method. After 100 days cultivation (60 days in dark and 40 days in light), the weight loss rate of the sawdust block media was 14.4% (12.8% to 15.7%) in average. After 5 to 7 days of fruiting process, 2~36 primordia per medium were formed. The number of primordium formation was in the following order: Manchuhyang> Sansanhyang> Sanbaekhyang> Bambithyang> Sangjanghyang> Taehyanggo. The stipe length was 41~59 mm as followed by Taehyanggo (59 mm), Sanbackhyang (56 mm), Bambithyang (54 mm), Manchuhyang (53 mm), Sanjanghyang (45 mm) and Sansanhyang (41 mm). Among the strains, Sansanhyang had short and thick stipe. The average weight of fruiting bodies was 33~77 g as following order of Taehyanggo (77 g), Bambithyang (51 g), Sansanhyang (50 g), Manchuhyang (41 g), Sanjanghyang (34 g) and Sanbackhyang (33 g). Mushroom production per 2 kg medium was the highest in Sanbackhyang (473 g) followed by Bambithyang (287 g), Manchuhyang (175 g), Sansanhyang (109 g), Sanjanghyang (78 g) and Taehyanggo (60 g). The hardness of the cap was 1,218 to 1,839 g/10 mm. Taehyanggo was the hardest (1,839 g/10 mm) and Bambithyang was the softest (1,218 g/10 mm). In conclusion, in the cultivation condition of sawdust block medium, mushroom production was good in Sanbackhyang and Bambithyang. Sansanhyang showed good in terms of fruiting body shape.

  • During 1968-1970, rearing method being held yearly through was conducted to find adequate rearing season under joint projects in various areas; Chung-nam area, Kyung-buk area, Chun-nam area. The results are summarized as follows: 1. In view of rearing results, earlier transfer represents better, in spring season while early transfer worst in autumn season. If the conventional transfer sets on critical point in autumn season, the value recorded gradually decreased in earlier and later transfer and rapidly in earlier and later. 2. With rearing season, obtained results are degraded in order of spring(1st-4th), autumn(7th-10th), late autumn(11th), summer(5th) , early autumn(6th). Late autumn transfer could be delayed for about 6-7 days in southern area. 3. With referrence to rearing results alone, it may be concluded that 4 time ordinary rearing is adoptable in multi-rearing method, dividing into 2 seasons which are 2 time spring rearing(1st-3rd) and 2 time autumn rearings(8th-10th).1st period of spring rearing should be done 3-4 days ahead of the conventional transfer dates being practiced in each local, and 2nd period of spring transfer 5-6 days delayed. In autumn transfer, 2-5 days ahead and 3-6 days delayed batches tested are preferable. In branch rearing, it is recommended that 4 time branch rearing is conducted to divide into 2 seasons which are 2 time spring rearing(1st-3rd) and 2 time autumn rearing (9th-11th) and that the former is carried out in the same level of the 2 time spring rearing, latter in the same level of the conventional autumn .earing (9th) , and late autumn rearing (11th).

  • This work was carried out to investigate how the effects on the growth af branches and the yield of mulberry leaves are shown, when two of each dwarf and normal branches are thinned out in sumner or early autumn. The results obtained are summarized as follows. 1) In mulberry trees after spring pruning: in case of thin out branches in summer and harvest in autumn (42 days after treatment), (1) The average length of branches in thin out trees showed 19% increase by autumn, which turned out to be 11% higher than that of non-thin out did (8%) (2) The thin out treated mulberry trees presented 9% increase in total yields of summer and autumn, when compared with those of the non-thin out trees. 2) In mulberry trees after sumner pruning: in case of thin out branches in early autumn and harvest either in autumn (15 days after treatment) or in late autumn (28 days after treatment), (1) The average length of branches showed about 6∼7% and 8%, intercase by autumn and late autumn, respectively. Thus no effects of thin out treatment could be recognized in growing of branches. (2) The thin out treated mulberry trees presented about 6% increase in total yields of early autumn, showing no significance through, when compared with those of ron-thin out treatment. Whereas the total yields of early autumn and late autumn showed 12% increase with significance at the level of 5% by thin out treatment. (3) As above mentioned, the thin out of mulberry branches brought about a good effect on yields of mulberry leaves, though less on average length of branches. It may be considered that the thin out treatment makes improve the living condition in mulberry trees and in turn induces photosynthesis actively, which results in increase the weight of leaves.
