  • The film cooling effectiveness on a flat plate measured by pressure sensitive paint technique. Six film cooling hole were fabricated on a flat plate with 30 degree angle with respect to the surface and three blowing ratios of 0.5, 1, and 2 were tested. Results showed that PSP technique successfully evaluated the distribution of film cooling effectiveness and showed similar results with references. The film cooling effectiveness near the film cooling holes was higher for lower blowing ratio case. As the blowing ratio was increased, the film cooling effectiveness near the film cooling hole decreased due to the lift off of the coolant. At far downstream, the film cooling effectiveness for higher blowing ratio was higher due to the coolant reattachment.

  • In this paper, film cooling characteristics at supersonic free stream conditions were examined experimentally by applying an IR-thermography. Film cooling experiments were carried out in a free-jet facility at Mach number of 3.0 and with unit Reynolds number of $42.53{\times}10^6$ and $69.35{\times}10^6$ using wedge shaped film cooling model which has a converging film cooling nozzle. Film cooling efficiency was calculated by measuring the surface temperature of PEEK(Polyether Ether Ketone) and the effects of angle of attack and blowing ratios on the film cooling efficiency were examined. The measured wall temperature was significantly reduced by the film cooling flow compared with the results without the film cooling flow. The usefulness of film cooling was also confirmed by the surface heat flux calculated using the surface temperature history of PEEK. As the blowing ratio increases the protected area of PEEK was also expanded along the direction of free stream and film cooling flow.

  • Various cooling techniques have been applied to the gas turbine blade in order to reduce heat load to the blade. On the blade surface, film cooling method is used and the accurate information of film cooling effectiveness should be evaluated in order to predict the exact temperature distribution in the blade. In this study, pressure sensitive paint (PSP) was used to measure the film cooling effectiveness on a flat plate. Results showed that PSP technique successfully evaluated the distribution of film cooling effectiveness. Three blowing ratios of 0.5, 1, and 2 were tested and the film cooling effectiveness near holes decreased as the blowing ratio increased, however, increased far downstream from the holes.

  • An experimental study was carried out to investigate the effect of film cooling in the lab-scale liquid rocket engine using liquid oxygen(LOx) and Jet A-1(Jet engine fuel) as propellants. Film coolants(Jet A-1 and water) was injected through the film cooling injector. The outside wall temperature of the combustor and film cooled length were determined for chamber pressure, mixture ratio, and the different geometries(injection angle) with the percent film coolant flow rate. The loss of characteristic velocity was determined for the case of film cooling with water and Jet A-1. As chamber pressure increased, the outside wall temperature increased in the nozzle but unchanged over the 9 percent film coolant flow rate for the combustion chamber used in this study. Characteristic velocity wasn't affected with the mixture ratio over the 9 percent film coolant flow rate.

  • The present study investigates to improve the film cooling performance on the vane endwall. Numerical simulation was conducted to analyze film cooling characteristics on the vane endwall. Six different hole arrangements were designed considering flow characteristics on the endwall. The results showed that the film cooling effectiveness was low on the pressure side and nozzle throat in the base case, because coolant was deflected from the pressure side to the suction side. On the other hand, when the holes were installed near the pressure side, the film cooling effectiveness was enhanced on the pressure side and nozzle throat, because the coolant was less affected by cross flow. Therefore, the film cooling effectiveness increases about 16% compared to the base hole arrangement.

  • For stable combustion and safety of a structure of the propulsion system, a cooling system to the liquid rocket engine should be incorporated. In this study, Eulerian-Lagrangian scheme for two phase combustion, nongray radiation and soot formation effect, and film-wall interaction have been introduced to study the effect of film cooling. After briefly introducing the governing equation, combustion characteristics with change of wall temperature has been investigated by varying such parameters as fuel mass fraction for film cooling, diameter of the fuel droplet, overall mixture fraction of oxygen to fuel. Also, radiative heat flux is compared with the conductive one at the combustor wall.

  • A numerical study is carried out to analyze the steady three-dimensional turbulent flow through cylindrical and fan-shaped holes and the film cooling of these holes at low and high blowing ratios. Compressible Reynoldsaveraged Navier-Stokes equations and the energy equation are solved using a finite-volume-based solver, and a shearstress transport model is used as the turbulence closure. The effects of the compound angle, pitch to diameter ratio, and lateral expansion angle of the hole on the film-cooling effectiveness are evaluated by the film-cooling effectiveness. It is observed that the compound angle of the hole enhances the film performance for the cylindrical hole, and a small hole pitch induces interactions between the coolants from the adjacent holes, thus reducing the film-cooling performance.

  • An experimental study was carried out to investigate the effect of film cooling in the lab-scale dump-cooled liquid rocket engine using LOX and kerosene as propellants. The nozzle of the rocket engine was film cooled with water as coolant. A special film cooling adapter was fabricated to introduce the film-coolant into the thrust chamber. The flow rates of film coolant was approximately 15~19 percent of the total propellant. The nozzle heat flux was determined from the measured temperature rise and flow rate of the coolant(water). Large reductions in the nozzle heat flux was resulted when film cooling adapter located directly upstream of the nozzle.

  • An analysis has been conducted of the optimal condition to maximize the specific impulse for a liquid rocket engine with film cooling. The present engine performance has been compared with the published conceptual design to be verified satisfactorily accurate. The optimal combination of film coolant flow rate and the regenerative cooling capacity has been found for maximum specific impulse. The optimal fuel pump pressure increases and the optimal film coolant flow decreases for a larger thrust engine. Higher turbine inlet temperature increases both the fuel pump pressure and the film coolant flow rate as the optimal condition. The coking temperature has the same qualitative effect as the turbine inlet temperature.
