  • The matching condition at a perforated wall with vertical slits involves the permeability parameter, which can be calculated by two different methods. One expresses the permeability parameter in terms of energy dissipation coefficient and jet length at the perforated wall, being advantageous in that all the related variables are known, but it gives wrong result in the limit of long waves. The other expresses the permeability parameter in terms of friction coefficient and inertia coefficient, giving correct result from short to long waves, but the friction coefficient should be determined on the basis of a best fit between measured and predicted values of such hydrodynamic coefficients as reflection and transmission coefficients. In the present study, an empirical formula for the friction coefficient is proposed in terms of known variables, i.e., the porosity and thickness of the perforated wall and the water depth. This enables direct estimation of the friction coefficient without invoking a best fit procedure. To obtain the empirical formula, hydraulic experiments are carried out, the results of which are used along with other researchers' results. The proposed formula is used to predict the reflection and transmission coefficients of a curtain-wall-pile breakwater, the upper part of which is a curtain wall and the lower part consisting of a perforated wall with vertical slits. The concurrence between the experimental data and calculated results is good, verifying the appropriateness of the proposed formula.

  • The seepage flow has been investigated conducting laboratory experiments mainly in order to determine the relation of seepage flow friction factor against Reynolds number. The apparatus of seepage flow measurements has the water flow almost horizontaly. Several sets of experiments were carried out, and various flow conditions were obtained in each set of flow. To cover wide range of flow conditions, used were various materials of different measurement sizes and various stages of water discharge in the seepage flow tests. Shape factor equation was developed using existing data, and based on the present laboratory data, an explicit equation was developed for the estimation of friction factor of seepage flow in the range of Reynolds number from about 1 to about 600. The same equation is expected for the flow condition of Reynolds number over 600, considering the trend of friction factor distribution.

  • Both the friction velocity and the friction coefficient have to be estimated to determine flow characteristic in an open channel. In spite of the importances in an open channel, the complete interpretation is highly difficult because of free water surface, the complex of cross section and the various hydraulic parameters. The researches related to the friction factor are based on empirical outcome. Therefore, the equations are difficult to be generally applied. For that reason, the new friction factor estimation equation using the entropy concept was proposed in the present study, and the data measured in rectangular and trapezoid cross sections was used to verify the accuracy of equation. The advantage of the proposed equation dose not use the energy slope term which is difficult to be measured and to be estimated in an open channel. In addition, the proposed method showed that the accurate friction factor f can be estimated on the Basis of theoretical background.

  • In high strength bolted joints, the corrosion of base material causes the reduction of slip resistance of the joints. In this study, tensile tests on slip-critical joints utilizing Zn/Al metal spraying corrosion resistance method were carried out in order to prevent the corrosion and meet the required mechanical characteristics of joints. In addition, slip coefficient and surface roughness were calculated. The key parameters were surface finishing condition and thickness of coating with the identical geometry in all specimens. From the results, it is found that the slip coefficient of the joints with coated finish after sand blast treatment as well as those of non-coated joints with only sand blast treatment were similar or superior to 0.45, which is a specification criteria of slip coefficient in friction-typed joints.

  • The wear behavior as the hardness of the sliding elements on the dry wear has been investigated using a dual leaf-spring. The materials of the specimens are used as ten kinds along their hardness. In this study, both upper and lower specimens have been used the same materials. Using experimental data, we figured the relationship between wear coefficient and friction coefficient, and the relationship between wear coefficient and friction temperature. Also we combined friction temperature and friction coefficient instead of wear coefficient. We substituted this into wear equation of Archard. The result had been derived a newly wear equation in using dual leaf-spring wear system.

  • Since the advent of turbojet aircraft with their greater weight and high landing speed breaking performance on runway surface has become un critical. Under certain weather conditions(wet weather, winter) hydroplaning or unacceptable loss of traction can occur, resulting in poor braking performance and possible loss of directional control. To address this concern a number of research project me conducted by NASA, FAA, USAF. The various method which was reported the advantage of the increasing the friction and decreasing the hydroplaning effect. A-2 section of inchon international airport was grooved using drying grooving method. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the dry grooving method the surface was spray with water and measured the fiction factor and the depth of the water using Mu meter and water depth measuring device. The field test results shooed that the fiction factor nos increased and the depth of the water decreased. The dry grooving method illustrated the reduction of hydroplaning and also, no distress on the runway.

  • Recently, the probability of rock joints being exposed to free faces is getting higher for the scale of rock mass structures gets larger. Also, the frequency of occurring dynamic events such as earthquakes and blasting has been increasing. Thus, the shear behavior of rock joints under different conditions needs to be investigated. In this study, a series of direct shear tests were carried out under various conditions to examine the velocity-dependent shear behavior of saw-cut rock joints. Two types of direct shear test were carried out. The first was to examine the velocity-dependent shear behavior of saw-cut rock joints at seven different shear velocities, each with three different normal stresses. The second was to examine the shear behavior of saw-cut rock joints when three different instantaneous shear velocities changed. As a result, the coefficient of friction was affected by normal stress. The breakpoint velocity, the point when the change of shear velocity starts to affect the frictional behavior, became lower as normal stress increased. Also, as the shear velocity became lower, the degree of stress-drop on stick-slip behavior became larger. As a result of examining the changes of friction coefficient, velocity weakening (decrease of friction coefficient) was observed. The decrement of friction coefficient due to the changes of shear velocity under slow shear velocity was larger than that under fast shear velocity.

  • Wave energy is dissipated mainly by friction on the seabed until the waves reach the surf zone. Many researchers have investigated the mechanism of wave friction and the bottom shear stress induced by wave motion at a certain point is now well estimated by introducing the wave friction factor related to the near bed velocity given by linear wave theory. The variation of wave energy or wave height over a long distance can be, however, estimated by an iteration process when the propagation of waves is strongly influenced by bed friction. In the present study simple semi-theoretical equation has been developed to compute the variation of wave height for the condition of wave propagation on a constant beach slope. The ratio of wave height is determined by the product of shoalng factor and wave height friction factor (frictional wave energy dissipation factor). The wave height estimated by the new equation is compared with the wave height estimated by the solution of numerical integration for the condition that the waves propagate on a constant slope.
