  • The main objective of this paper is to evaluate the control performance of a coulomb friction damper(CFD) for controlling the inelastic behavior of seismically excited structures, The seismic performances of various buildings are evaluated using capacity spectrum method(CSM), and the additional dampings are calculated If the evaluated performance levels of the buildings are below the target level. Maximum friction force of the CFD to achieve additional damping is provided using the concept of equivalent viscous damping, Numerical simulations for single degree of freedom(SDOF) systems with various structural periods and post yield stiffness ratios demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed procedure.

  • In this study, friction angles on the surface of vertical rigid ground anchor in normally consolidated dry sand were measured by model pullout tests in laboratory. Friction angles were obtained from the normal and shear stresses measured along depth of the anchor stir face by attaching several 2-dimensional load cells. Model tests were conducted under the plane strain state and axial symmetric state. From the results of tests, it was concluded that the maximum friction angle on the anchor surface coincides nearly with the maximum angle of stress obliquity on the plane of zero-extension direction obtained by plane strain compression test. This result was made with regard to the strength anisotropy and stress dependency of sand. It showed that when angle of shear resistance of the sand is applied to the friction angle of the anchor surface, the design capacity could be less than the applied force, thus making the anchor unsafe.

  • In this paper, the optimization of frictional bearings that applied to improve the seismic performance of conventional bridges were conducted. The nonlinear dynamic analysis of steel bridges and concrete bridges are carried out with the El Centro and artificial earthquake motions, and the reponses of the bridges were optimized by genetic algorithm. The object functions were considered with two parameters, such as shear forces and displacements at bearing, and the optimum object functions were searched by varying the weighting factors of the two parameters. As results, in case of the steel bridges, the optimum results were obtained when larger weight factor was imposed to the shear force. However, in case of concrete bridges, larger weight factor was need to the displacement for optimum results.

  • This study evaluated the effect of foam volume ratio on shear friction behavior of bottom ash based lightweight aggregate concrete (LWA_BA). The LWA_BA with different foam volume ratio ranged between 8 and 25 MPa for compressive strength(fck), 17.3~62.5 kN for shear capacity at first shear crack(Vcr), 31.1~73.8 kN for shear friction capacity(Vn), and 0.01~0.03 mm for slip at maximum peak load(S0). fck decreased with increase in the foam volume ratio, showing that this trend was also observed in Vcr, Vn, and S0.

  • Friction pendulum system is developed to prevent the damage of transformer, which is the most important among the electric power facilities, due to the earthquake and its seismic capacity is verified through the shaking table test. The applicability of friction pendulum system is confirmed as test results of compressive capacity test and friction test. Especially, as a result of shaking table test with a large scale transformer model, friction pendulum system gives to the reduction of maximum response acceleration by 30% at anchorage of transformer and 59% at the top of porcelain bushing comparing with the existing anchorage type. In addition to the reduction of maximum response acceleration, natural frequency of transformer is shifted to long period due to the friction pendulum system. In case that friction pendulum system is applied to the transformer, the damage of transformer can be prevented effectively under the earthquake.

  • Open-ended steel pipe piles have outside frictional force and inside frictional resistance in which blocked soil acts on the inside of the steel pipe during installation. It is expected that the ultimate load will change depending on the inside and outside resistance. And, if the ground on which the piles were constructed is clay soil, it is predicted that it will have effect on the negative skin friction caused by the ground settlement. Therefore, in this study, the behavior according to the inside and outside resistance characteristics of steel pipe piles was analyzed numerically, and the frictional force distribution, axial load and settlements before and after the occurrence of ground settlement were calculated. As a result of the analysis, the inside frictional resistance had less influence than the outside frictional resistance. However, inside frictional resistance is considered to be one of the important factors considering the effect on the overall pile behavior, and both resistance factors need to be considered in the design process.

  • Model pile tests are performed, first, to estimate donwndrag exerted on pile surfaces due to the settlement of surrounding soils, and, second, to evaluate the efficiency of the downdrag reduction methods such as the bitumen coating method and the method of the attachment of an enlarged base. Test results show that the downdrag forces may be expressed as 0.25(;effective overburden). Bitumen coating reduces the downdrag by more than 50 percent, and the enlarged base attachment method is also effective, whose effectiveness increases as the sixte of the base increases as expected. When the bitumen coating and enlarged base are both applied, the downdrag force is reduced as much as 90 percent. Finally, it is found that the quantity of the relative displacement between the pile and the surrounding soil downdrag is extremely small.

  • The purpose of this paper is to present a design procedure of a friction damper for controlling elastic and inelastic responses of building structures under earthquake excitation. The equivalent damping and period increased by the friction damper are estimated using ATC-40 and ATC-55 procedures which provide equivalent linear system for bilinear one, and then a design formula to achieve target performance response level by the friction damper is presented. It is identified that there exists error between the responses obtained by this formula and by performing nonlinear analysis and the features of the error vary according to the hardening ratio, yield strength ratio, and structural period. Equations for compensating the error are proposed based on the least square method, and the results from numerical analysis indicate that the error is significantly reduced. The proposed formula can be used without much error for designing a friction damper for retrofitting a structure showing elastic or inelastic behavior.

  • This study investigates a simple, yet effective and affordable, manufacturing method to increase the electrical efficiency by triboelectric generator (TEG) applying 3D printers. In this study, we propose the newly manufacturing method for producing a macroscale surface patterning. Overall experiments were conducted in designed test-bed chamber system which can control the magnitude and frequency of the frictional force and the relative humidity. Furthermore, we can demonstrate the voltage enhancement of macroscale surface patterns about 1.6-fold. The peak voltage producing by TEG was as high as 18 V. In comparison with conventional process that employ micro- and nanoscale patterns, the proposed process by 3D printer is faster and more suitable for mass production.

  • Three prestressed concrete(PC) piles were installed for research purpose at Seosan area of west sea of Korea, and also cone penetration tests (CPT) were performed near two pile locations in order to compute PC pile shaft resistance by using CPT data measured. Three common CPT prediction methods that ia, Schmertmann method, Tumay Sl Fakroo method and LCPC method in France were used to predict pile shaft resistance. The pile shaft resistance predicted by each method was compared with that obtained by full-scale loading test and pile driving analyzer to estimate reliability of each prediction method. The predicted resistances based on three CPT-based methods underestimated significantly the resistances obtained from by fullrcale loading test, performed at 25 days and 42 days text pile installtion. There were, however, good agreements of predicted shaft resistance of piles between three CPT-based methods and pile driving analyzer tested two weeks after pile installtion.
