Indirect Particle Agglutination Antibody Testing for Early Diagnosis of Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia in Children (소아에서의 마이코플라스마 폐렴의 진단을 위한 항체 검사에 관한 연구)

  • Objectives: Outbreaks of pneumonia caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP) occur every 3-4 years in Korea, most recently in 2011. The aim of our study was to determine the optimal time to perform indirect particle agglutination antibody assays to improve early diagnosis of MP pneumonia in children. Methods: A database of 206 pediatric patients treated for pneumonia at the Hanyang University Hospital from June to October 2011 was analyzed retrospectively for demographic characteristics and laboratory test results. Results: Among the 206 patients treated for pneumonia during the study period, there were 160 children (mean age, 5.44 years) diagnosed with MP pneumonia, who were studied further. The mean age of these MP pneumonia patients was 5.44 years. Antibody titers increased with increasing time between symptom onset and the collection of serum collection: MP titers were <1:640 for sera collected after 5.44 days and titers ${\geq}1:640$ for those collected after 8.58 days; P<0.001). Antibody titers were considered positive when they reached ${\geq}1:640$. In 42 MP pneumonia patients in whom there was a four-fold or greater increase in titer between successive serum samples, the optimal cut-off time-point for distinguishing between the initial and second titer groups was 7.5 days after the onset of symptoms (sensitivity, 90.5%; specificity, 92.9%). Conclusions: Negative MP antibody titers earlier than 8 days after the onset of symptoms in children with pneumonia may require repeating to confirm the diagnosis. This finding could optimize diagnosis and result in better therapeutic outcomes of MP pneumonia in children.

Mycorrhizae Effects on N Uptake and Assimilation Estimated by 15N Tracing in White Clover under Water-Stressed Conditions (15N 추적에 의한 화이트 클로버에서 마이코라이자 접종이 수분 스트레스 조건하에서 질소 흡수 및 동화의 평가)

  • To investigate the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis on N uptake and its assimilation under drought-stressed conditions in white clover, total $^{15}N$ amount and $^{15}N$ amount incorporated into $NO_3^-$, amino acids and soluble proteins were quantified by $^{15}N$ tracing during 7 days of water treatment. Under well-watered conditions, there were no significant effects of AM symbiosis on all parameters analyzed in this study. Drought stress decreased total $^{15}N$ amount both in AM and non-AM plants, with a lower rate in AM plants (-13.8%) relative to non-AM plants (-28.5%) at day 7. Drought significantly increased $^{15}N-NO_3^-$ amount in non-AM plants. The amount of $^{15}N$-amino acids was 1.26-fold and 1.33-fold higher, respectively, in leaves and roots of AM plants compared to those of non-AM ones. Drought decreased the amount of $^{15}N$-soluble proteins in leaves at day 7, with a higher rate in non-AM plants than in AM ones. These results clearly indicate that AM colonization effectively alleviating the decrease in N uptake, amino acids and proteins synthesis caused by drought stress.

Comparison of Broiler Performance according to Infection Rate of Chicken Mycoplasmosis in Broiler Breeders (육용종계 농장의 닭 마이코플라즈마병 감염율에 따른 육계 사육성적 비교)

  • Various factors negatively affect poultry production, including a multitude of avian pathogens. Among them, Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) and Mycoplasma synoviae (MS) cause world-wide economic losses in the poultry industry. Although respectively, MG and MS induce chronic respiratory disease and synovitis in poultry, these pathogens often manifest as clinically inapparent infections and many countries are therefore having difficulties effectively eradicating them. In this study, five broiler breeder farms in Korea were investigated for the presence of Mycoplasma infection from 2016 to 2018. Serum samples were collected for detection of antibodies to mycoplasma species using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit. Additionally, the production index and feed conversion rate of broilers were recorded. According to this investigation, broiler breeder farms in 2018 were serologically negative for Mycoplasma infection with broilers exhibiting a high production index and low feed conversion rate. Thus, eradicating mycoplasma in poultry farms is critical for improving chick quality and overall poultry production.

Brachial Artery Thrombosis in an 8-year-old Boy with Antiphospholipid Antibodies Induced by Mycoplasma pneumoniae Infection: a Case Report

  • Antiphospholipid antibodies may be produced in cases involving autoimmune diseases and can sometimes be caused by infections, such as Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection. However, antiphospholipid antibodies causing thrombosis associated with M. pneumoniae pneumonia in children have rarely been reported. We report a case of an 8-year-old boy with M. pneumoniae pneumonia with antiphospholipid antibodies, complicated by brachial artery thrombosis. He was found to have antiphospholipid antibodies and low protein S levels. The brachial artery thrombus was removed via thrombectomy. The titers of antiphospholipid antibodies turned normal within 5 months. This is a rare case of M. pneumoniae infection with brachial artery thrombosis associated with transient antiphospholipid antibodies.
