  • Though a valve is a very important part in a system to control properly, it has potential failure caused by gap from valve stem to ball connection, and abrasion, crack, fixation causing operational trouble and accidents. 64% of the valve failure in the real case was the failure of airtightness and most accidents of leakage and explosion were occurred while fixing the failure. While there are no proper safety manual, maintenance procedure and regulation for industrial valves excluding safety valve, safety management for the valves is left to the discretion of the maintenance company. Strict maintenance that removes hazards and emergency response procedure are required to prevent and reduce the loss of accident. This study suggests safety enhancement measures through valve monitoring by investigating the status of use of valve and current maintenance. Enhancement of gas safety management can be acquired by a monitoring system that provides diagnosis for valve status, monitoring real-time gas leakage, management of entire cycle lifetime that can reduce maintenance cost.

A Study on the Photocatalytic Decomposition of Organic Dyes by Porous Polyethersulfone/TiO2 Composite Membrane (기공형 polyethersulfone/TiO2 복합체 멤브레인의 유기염료분해 반응에 대한 광촉매 특성 연구)

  • Composite membranes consisting of TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) and porous polymers have been widely utilized in photocatalytic water treatment because the composite membranes can allow an easy recovery of NPs after the photocatalytic reaction as well as the reduction of fouling in the membrane. However, the photocatalytic efficiency of the immobilized TiO2 NPs in the composite membranes has been discussed to a limited degree. In this study, we prepared polyethersulfone (PES)/TiO2 composite membranes to study the photocatalytic decomposition of organic dyes under light illumination. The decomposition kinetics of dye molecules by the PES/TiO2 composite membranes and colloidal TiO2 NPs have been compared to discuss the photocatalytic efficiency of NPs before and after their immobilization on the polymer membrane.

A Study on the Piston Temperatures and Carbon Deposit Formation in LPG Fuelled Engine (LPGdusfy 엔진의 피스톤온도 및 카본디포짓 형성에 관한 연구)

  • The wide open throttle performance and piston temperatures were measured by the change of fuel : gasoline and liquefied petroleum gas(LPG). Bench test method was developed and experimented to study the effect of temperature on the formation of carbon deposit. The bench test results were confirmed by measuring the piston temperature and observing the deposit production rate at an actual engine running condition. Results show that if the fuel of spark ignition engine is changed from gasoline to LPG, the output power decreases about 10% and the piston temperatures increase about 40~55$^{\circ}C$. In actual engine tests, because of this temperature increase, it was observed that the quantity of carbon deposit in the top ring groove increased in a big degree. Consuquently, it is known that the fing sticking may occur if the gasoline engine was rebuilt to LPG fuelled engine. Therefore, in order to preserve the durability of LPG fuelled engine, it is necessary to lower the piston temperature by hardware modificationor to reduce the carbon deposit by the improvement of engine oil.

Performance Improvement of a VLIW ARchitecture without Pipeline-Stall during Instruction Cache Miss (명령어 캐시미스중에서도 파이프라인의 고착을 피할 수 있는 VLIW 구조의 성능향상)

  • 본 논문에서는 명령어 수준의 병렬성을 다루는 세 가지 프로세서 모델을 정의하고 각 모델별로 명령어 파이프라인을 운용하는 방법에 다른 실행사이클의 변화를 연구하였다. 본 논문에서 고려한 세가지 모델은1) 긴 명령어 인출시 캐시미스가 발생하면 명령어 파이프라인이 정지되는 전통적인 VLIW 구조, 2) 전통적인 VLIW 구조와 같이 긴 명령어 인출시 캐시미스가 발생하면 명령어 파이프라인이 정지되나 실시간에 긴 명령어를 실행 유니트로 스케줄링할 수있으므로 목적 코드에서 LNOP를 제거할 수 있는 구조 및 3)2)의 구조에서 긴 명령어를 인출하는 과정에서 캐시미스가 발생하더라도 LNOP을 분석 유니트로 제공하여 명령어 파이프라인을 계속 진행시키는 구조의 세 가지이다. 연구결과, 세 번째 구조에서 발생되는 LNOP 의 수는 첫 번째 구조와 두 번째 구조에 비하여 적어서 동일한 응용 프로그램을 처리하는데 필요한 실행사이클의 수가 가장 짧았다. 여러 가지 벤치 마크들에 대한 모의 실험에서도 세 번째 구조가 다른 구조의 프로세서에 비하여 실행사이클의 수가 가장 짧음을 확인할 수 있었다.

  • Microbial whole-cell biosensors can be excellent analytical tools for monitoring environmental pollutants. They are constructed by fusing reporter genes (e.g., lux, gfp or lacZ) to inducible regulatory genes which are responsive to the relevant pollutants, such as aromatic hydrocarbons and heavy metals. A large spectrum of microbial biosensors has been developed using recombinant DNA technology and applied in fields as diverse as environmental monitoring, medicine, food processing, agriculture, and defense. Furthermore, their sensitivity and target range could be improved by modification of regulatory genes. Recently, microbial biosensor cells have been immobilized on chips, optic fibers, and other platforms of high-throughput cell arrays. This paper reviews recent advances and future trends of genetically modified microbial biosensors used for monitoring of specific environmental pollutants.

Forming Process of Surface Contaminants on Ten-story Stone Pagoda of Wongaksa Temple, Seoul (서울 원각사지 십층석탑의 표면오염물 형성과정)

  • This study was interpreted the forming process of surface contaminants on ten-story stone pagoda of Wongaksa temple, Seoul. Results of research, we estimated that black contaminants were formed by graphite stuck carbon in air pollution substance after that gypsum was generated by chemical weathering on stone pagoda. White contaminants were built by recrystallization of calcite that were made by decomposition of finishing materials and structure on the stone surface. To preserve a long-term of stone pagoda in Wongaksa temple, there were required that continuous monitoring, anticorrosion treatment and contaminants cleaning of protective facilities.

Identification on Fatigue Failure of Impeller at Single Stage Feedwater Pumps During Commissioning Operation (단단 주 급수 펌프 임펠러에서 시운전 중 발생한 피로 절손에 관한 규명 연구)

  • This paper presents a case history on failures of impeller and shaft due to pressure pulsation at single stage feed water pumps in 700 MW nuclear power plant during commissioning operation. The pumps had been service and had run for approximately $40{\sim}50$ hours. For the most part, the failures of impeller occurred with the presence of a number of fatigue cracks. All cracks were associated with the deleterious surface layer of impeller by visual and metallurgical examination. On-site testing and analytical approach was performed on the systems to diagnose the problem and develop a solution to reduce the effect of exciting sources. A major concern at high-energy centrifugal pump is the pressure pulsation created from trailing edge of the Impeller blade, flow separation and recirculation at centrifugal pumps of partial load. Pressure pulsation due to the interaction generating between impeller and casing coincided with natural frequencies of the impeller and shaft system during 1ow load operation. It was identified that dynamic stress exceeding the fatigue strength of the material at the thin shroud section due to the hydraulic instability at running condition below BEP.

Characteristic of Inorganic Contaminants and Conservation Treatment Materials for the Three-Storied Stone Pagoda of Bulguksa Temple in Gyeongju (경주 불국사 삼층석탑(석가탑)의 무기오염물과 보수물질 특성)

  • Analyses of the three-storied stone pagoda at the Bulguksa temple in Gyeongju were carried out in order to identify the cause for material characteristics of inorganic contaminants and conservation treatment materials. Results indicated that foreign soil or weathering soil caused yellow discoloration of the pagoda, reddish-brown contaminants were formed by goethite (FeOOH), an iron oxide mineral, and black pollutants were formed by manganese (Mn) oxide, leading to discoloration of the rock. Among the restoration materials used in the past, cement mortar could cause whitening by reacting with the external environment. The results were used as basic standards to evaluate the material characteristics of the surface contaminants and identify a set of effective conservation treatments. Nevertheless, continuous monitoring is required, as there is a high possibility of regeneration of pollutants in the future because of the continuous exposure of the pagoda to the external environment.

Evaluation on the Dismantling Activities of the KRR-2 Radioisotope Production Facilities (연구로 2호기 동위원소생산시설 해체활동 평가)

  • In accordance with the KRR-1 & 2 decommissioning project, the decontamination and dismantling activities of the KRR-2 auxiliary facilities, radioisotope production facilities, were completed from Aug 2001 to Dec 2002. The auxiliary facilities were composed of the concrete hot-cell, lead hot-cells and several laboratories for the radioisotope production. The dismantling objects are home hoods, experimental desks, sinks, and contaminated inner facilities. For the purpose of the safe decommissioning activity, the method statements and working procedures were set up. The manpower of the total 20,933 man-hour was required and several dismantling equipments were also. The maximum surface contamination is: 9.24 Bq/$\textrm{cm}^2$ in removable contamination and 350,000 cpm in fixed contamination. The total amount of 62.146 Ton was raised as dismantled waste with kinds of the concretes, wood, steels, etc. The collective dose was evaluated as 0.33 mam-mSv during this period.
