  • The crisis of university must be overcome by emphasizing the acquisition and use of knowledge for students to participate in and solve contemporary and diverse social/regional problems through educational method innovation. University classes should be a way of contributing to solving human problems, the UN's Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs) and various issues in the community. This study focused on project-based learning to cultivate socially engaged and problem-solving talents. In addition, a problem definition toolkit model was produced and tested to improve problem solving ability. Through follow-up research, I plan to develop a performance measurement model corresponding to the field application-improvement-feedback of Living Lab project classes, and suggest a method that universities can easily apply to the existing curriculum.

  • To meet the challenge of new type of innovation activities requires us to understand the social context of innovation and the potential needs of innovation users and, based on this, to co-construct technology and society simultaneously. Effective 'demand articulation' activities such as the understanding and utilization of user experiences and socio-technical planning are prerequisites for carrying out post-catch up innovations shaping new trajectories and contributing to solving social problems. Living Lab has recently been emerging particularly in Europe as an 'user-driven innovation model', in which users are active participants in innovation activities. The purpose of this study is to contribute to a theoretical discussion of Living Lab as an user-driven innovation model, to make a brief review of cases of Living Lab and to explore Living Lab's applicability in the Korean context. Living Lab is an open innovation model, in which end suers actively participate in innovation processes in a particular geographical space or region and would be able to solve specific problems of that space or region. In that sense, Living Lab would be able to strengthen the problem-solving capabilities of local communities and to become a pioneer in inducing and realizing a new socio-technical system. Furthermore, Living Lab could become an innovative policy tool reflecting recent major changes in innovation policy paradigms such as post-catch up innovation, demand-oriented innovation, regional innovation, societal innovation, innovation eco-system and socio-technical system transition, and thus make a contribution to exploring a new way of bringing about changes in the Korean society.

  • Innovation in local industries and the development of public services require, among other things, shared growth with the concept of regional co-prosperity. Regional co-prosperity is essentially aimed at bridging regional balance or regional gaps, which means a relationship that can achieve shared growth through complementary cooperation. In this study, cases using living labs were drawn based on the current status of industry-academic cooperation at the level of regional innovation and its policy implications were sought. Local governments are making various attempts to solve regional problems and enhance the linkage effect of securing mutual competitiveness through co-prosperity cooperation autonomously. In particular, an effective approach has been continued by activating the Living Lab Network, a problem-solving mechanism, focusing on pending regional issues. Above all, one of the strategies for regional development should be linked to the establishment of a cooperative system for win-win cooperation and policy means to support it. The activation of cooperative programs with local universities, companies and local governments and the case of problem-solving using living labs. Therefore, it suggested that active participation by various stakeholders and a cooperative governance model were needed to enable Living Lab.

  • In South Korea, it has been increased the necessity of supplying housing services to meet the needs and desires of various residents by reflecting various demographic and social changes. In particular, various smart device has been widely utilized in South Korea and the smart technologies, such as artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things has been developed rapidly. These smart technologies could support smart housing that allows residents to easily and comfortably employ residential services. However, it is necessary to improve the awareness of users in order to spread the smart housing residential services connected to smart technologies. For this reason, this study observed changes in users' perceptions of smart housing residential service technology using Living Lab. As a result, after experiencing the Living Lab, users' awareness of smart housing housing service increased, and it was observed that the preferred housing service technology was more detailed than before the Living Lab experience. This study shows that it is important to raise users' awareness for the dissemination of smart housing residential service technology, and that Living Lab can be an effective means for this purpose.

  • The purpose of this study is to synthesize effects of the living lab-based education through meta-analysis. Seven primary studies reporting the effect of living lab-based education were carefully selected for data analysis. Research questions are as follows. First, what is the overall effect size of the living lab-based education? The overall effect size refers to the effect on the cognitive and affective domains. Second, what is the effect size of the living lab-based education according to categorical variables? Categorical variables are outcome characteristics, study characteristics, and design characteristics. Results are summarized as follows. First, the overall effect size of living lab-based education was 0.347. Second, the effect size according to the cognitive domain was 1.244 for information process, 0.593 for communication, 0.261 for problem solving, and 0.26 for creativity. Third, the effect size according to subject area was shown in the order of electrical and electronic engineering 1.146, technology and home economics 0.489, artificial intelligence 0.379, and practical arts 0.168. Fourth, the effect size according to school level was 1.058 for high school, 0.312 for middle school, and 0.217 for elementary school. Fifth, the effect size by grade level was 0.295 when two or more grades were integrated and 0.294 for a single grade.

  • Recently, the daily life safety detection functionalities such as fall accident detection and burn danger detection are widely disseminated along with the development of IoT and smart home. These safety detection functionalities are mostly performed by artificial intelligence. However, simple accuracy measurement of the safety detection in laboratory environment is often far from practical performance in daily life environment. To mitigate this problem, this paper introduces two techniques, i.e. living lab and confusion matrix. Living lab is more than simple simulation of daily life environment, and it enables users to directly participate technology development and product design. Various performance measures induced from confusion matrix significantly help to evaluate the performance of artificial intelligence system for proper application purposes.

  • The purpose of this study is to illuminate the reason why community building policies by the Government seem to fail to work properly in Korea. The existing studies focus mainly on designing community building systems, thus they cannot provide plausible explanations about the cause of the unsuccessful outcomes from the policies. To overcome the limitations of the existing studies, the authors examine the implementation factors to influence the policy instruments with the perspective of policy implementation. By performing the analysis, the results imply the implementation factors, such as executer's competence, supports by related interests, incentive systems, and legal-institutional instruments, are important to influence the implementation performance of the relevant policy instruments. To make community building successful policies, The authors therefore suggest that the capacity of local administrators and residents should be raise, and one of which the way to enhance is to support research and program development by the resident-oriented living laboratory systems in localities.
