Even though the longitudinally stiffened laminated composite plates with closed section ribs should be an effective system for axially compressed members, the existing researches on the applications of closed-section ribs, especially for the laminated composite plates, are not sufficient. This study is aimed to examine the influence of the sectional stiffness of U-shaped ribs on the buckling modes and strengths of laminated composite plates. Applying the orthotropic plates with eight layers of the layup $[(0^{\circ})_4]_s$ and $[(0^{\circ}/90^{\circ})_2]_s$, 3-dimensional finite element models for the U-rib stiffened plates were setup by using ABAQUS and then a series of eigenvalue analyses were conducted. From the parametric studies, the minimum required ply thicknesses as well as the buckling strengths were presented for the analysis models. The buckling strengths were compared with the theoretical critical stress equation for simply supported plates based on the Classical laminated plate theory. This study will contribute to the future study for evaluating the minimum required stiffness and optimum design of U-rib stiffened plates.

The novel cut-and-cover tunnel construction method using rib-reinforced pre-cast arch segments has been recently developed and applied for practice to secure a structural stability of high covering and wide width section tunnels. Cut-and-cover tunnels are usually damaged by the seismic behavior of backfill grounds in case of a low covering condition. Seismic analyses are performed in this study to characterize the dynamic behavior of rib-reinforced pre-cast arch cut-and-cover tunnels. Seismic analyzes for 2 lane cast-in-place and rib-reinforced pre-cast arch cut-and-cover tunnels are carried out by using the commercial FDM program (FLAC2D) considering various field conditions such as the covering height embankment slope and excavation slope. It can be concluded that the amplification of seismic wave is reduced due to an increase in the structural stiffness induced by rib-reinforcement. The results show that the rib-reinforced pre-cast arch cut-and-cover tunnels are more effective against the seismic loading, compared to the cast-in-place cut-and-cover tunnels.

The elastic buckling strength of a Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic (GFRP) pipe reinforced with ribs was evaluated. The height and thickness of a rib and the spacing between two adjacent ribs were considered as factors affecting the buckling strength of the pipe. And also, the ratio of the longitudinal stiffness and transverse stiffness was considered as the parameter affecting the buckling strength as the GFRP is orthotropic material. Buckling strengths of various GFRP pipe models with different shapes and stiffness ratios were evaluated by FE analyses and a formula to estimate the elastic buckling strength of a rib-reinforced pipe made of orthotropic material was suggested from the regression with the results from the FE analysis. Analytical results show that a rib-reinforced pipe has a buckling strength superior to a general flat pipe and the suggested formula estimates accurate buckling strength of the rib-reinforced pipe.
Orthogonally stiffened steel plates are used for orthotropic steel decks of long-span bridges because of high degree of flexural and torsional resistances and good load-distribution behavior. An analytic study is presented for evaluating the buckling strength of orthogonally stiffened plates subjected to uniaxial compression. By using the plate theory, the buckling stress under overall and partial buckling modes, is derived. Parametric studies are performed to show the effects of the stiffness and the number of transverse and longitudinal ribs on the buckling strength. The results show quantitatively strong influence of stiffness and spacing of longitudinal and transverse ribs.
A simple design method for rib-reinforced seismic steel moment connections has been recently proposed based on the equivalent strut model. An experimental program was implemented to verify the proposed design method, as well as develop the schemes that will prevent cracking at the rib tip where stress concentration was evident. All specimens designed using the proposed method were able to develop a satisfactory connection plastic rotation of 0.04 radian. In addition to rib reinforcement, slight beam flange trimming pushed the plastic hinging and local buckling of the beam away from the rip tip and effectively reduced cracking potential at the rib tip. Using strain gage readings, the strut action of the rib and resulting reverse shear in the beam web were also experimentally identified.
In this study, the effects of ring stiffeners for buckling of cylindrical shells with composite materials were analyzed. The finite element method was used: 3-D beam elements were used for stiffeners and flat shell elements were used for cylindrical shells and were improved by introducing a substitute shear strain. The ring stiffeners were of the transverse rib type. The buckling behaviors of the cylindrical shells were analyzed based on various parameters, such as locations and sizes of stiffeners, diameter/length ratios and boundary conditions of shells, and fiber-reinforced angles. Effective reinforcement was examined by understanding the exact behaviors for buckling. The results of the analysis may serve as references for designs and future investigations.
In this study, the parametric analysis for the buckling behavior of plates stiffened with the new type(${\Box}$ type) ribs was performed. Changes of the buckling capacity according to dimensions of ${\Box}$ type ribs show certain behaviors, so that the system to find the section of ${\Box}$ type ribs under the specific buckling capacity can be proposed. Applying this system to the steel deck of existing bridges, more economic sections of ${\Box}$ type ribs rather than that of closed ribs can be obtained. Therefore, the economic section of steel deck having the required buckling capacity can be designed by using the proposed system of ${\Box}$ type ribs.
The objective of this study is to determine the effect of the loading size on displacements of stiffened plates with open ribs using the orthotropic rigidity ratio as the parameter. To analyze the displacement behavior of stiffened plates according to the loading size, a concentrated load and three types of uniform distributed loads were applied on the rib at the center of some plates. The results of the analysis of various stiffened plates show that the central displacement ratio of the distributed load to the concentrated load increased according to the decrease in the loading size, and that the ratio can be expressed as a function of the rigidity ratio for each rib space. The maximum displacement of the stiffened plate subjected to the distributed load did not appear at the center of the plate due to the local behavior, and the increasing ratio of the maximum displacement to the central displacement can be expressed as a function of the rigidity ratio for each rib space. Orthotropic plate analysis can achieve more accurate results using the proposed functions, and the application of the functions to examples of a different aspect ratio and support condition shows good accuracy. Therefore, using the functions proposed in this study, the central and maximum displacements can easily be achieved in the orthotropic plate analysis of stiffened plates subjected to the distributed load.
The purpose of this study is to propose an economic new type rib by applying plate stiffening methods of the corrugated plate and the honey-comb sandwich panel to the steel deck plate and comparing the new type rib with existing open and closed ribs. The trapezoidal corrugated type, ㄹ type, honey-comb type and ㅁ type ribs are considered as new type ribs and the moment and the steel volume are compared with that of open ribs and closed ribs. The results shows that the honey-comb type and ㅁ type ribs are good in aspects of economic feasibility and the ㅁ type is better than the honey-comb type. To make the ㅁ type rib applicable to the steel deck plate, the sensitivity analysis and parametric study are performed and the system to select the proper section under the particular stress condition is established. The closed rib of real bridges is compared with the ㅁ type rib of the proposed system and it is known that the new type rib is more economic. Therefore, more economic steel deck plates can be achieved by using the system proposed in this study for the plate stiffened with the new ㅁ type rib.
The purpose of this study was the estimation and formulation of orthotropic flexural rigidities considering the deformed shape for a plate stiffened with rectangular ribs. Analytical results of methods modifying the flexural rigidity of the x-direction, the y-direction or both directions were compared at the center, the x-directional quarter point and the y-directional quarter point of stiffened plates loaded at the center. The composite method modifying the flexural rigidity of both directions improves the accuracy compared with the other methods. Moreover, the ratio of modified coefficients for each directional rigidity can be expressed as a function corresponding to each dimension of stiffened plates. The application of modified coefficient functions to various types of stiffened plates with different boundary conditions, aspect ratios and rib arrangement shows that the increment of the error ratio is small compared with examples of this study and the application of proposed functions shows more accurate results than previous methods modifying the flexural rigidity. Therefore, by using the modified coefficient functions proposed in this study, the orthotropic plate analysis of plates stiffened with rectangular ribs can easily achieve more accurate displacement results.
