  • The light is one of the most important factors in architectural design. Especially, natural light is the valuable source of illumination that can be utilized for better indoor environment. Compared to artificial light, it is a sustainable energy source without the cost of electric energy and offers a more natural feeling to residents stayed in buildings. Natural light also creates light and shadow in building. It enables people to perceive the depth of space. Many architects have tried to suggest various technologies to create optimum indoor environment by using the natural light. Therefore, this paper tried to examine the works of Le Corbusier and to analyze how to control the light in his works and apply it to his design. It will help to know how he created different characteristics to spaces by using natural light.

  • Heidegger's speculation on "Disclosure" makes it possible to know on image expression fundamentally. "Disclosure" means that the 'earth' and the 'world' are not fixed into one, but harmonize dynamically with each other under continuous mutual tension and mutual support. When they are well-weaved with each other, the two ways are collectively defined as "disclosure Image". In regard to the technique, the study analyzed 'allegory' and 'reactivation'. The former refers to showing image potentially, while the latter means embodying and revealing image apparently. Le Corbusier's late Architecture provides a simultaneous reactivation of various images through continuous cross-weaving rather than being inclined to either the earth or the world.

  • This study intends to understand the visual experience of architectural space generated by users' movement based on the interpretation of visual properties. An analytic theory of Isovist is suggested for the objective and comparable measurement for such visual experience, and a computer program for the analysis has been proposed as well. By using the analytical theory and computer program, eight houses designed by Adolf Loos and Le Corbusler are analyzed for the purpose of understanding the visual characteristics of the Modern Architecture and the contemporaries. The result shows that, while the architectural space of Loos emphasizes personal privacy as for being livable spaces, the architectural space of Corbusier emphasizes users' movement as for including diverse visual arrays. These commensurable results exhibit that the analytical tool and research frame suggested in this study can be a competitive tool for such analysis.

  • This thesis aims at understanding Le Corbusier's architecture through study of proportion. Based on the analysis of these texts, four elements - geometry in the outline, diagonal regulation lines in the facade, arithmetic rhythm in the structure, composition in the inner space - were listed. Through these four proportional systems. ten houses of 1920's, designed by Le Corbusier were analysed. The Le Corbusier's proportional system can be classified by two different purposes ; aesthetics and utility standardization for the mass production was reflected. In the later period, the proportion system of 1920's has changed through the process of self-contradiction. But the concept of the golden section and the human scale was reflected on Modulor, which Le Corbusier created in 1940's. Therefore, Le Corbuiser's notion of proportion for harmony of architecture has consistent meaning throughout all of his works from the 1920's.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand Le Corbusier's idea of public and private spaces, and the hierarchical spatial structure in his multi-family housings. It investigates the origin of Le Corbusier's ideology about the public and private spaces in his multi-family housing projects. Precedents those influenced his ideas are two: first, Fourier's ideal community model $Phalanst\grave{e}re$; second, Monastery of Ema near Florence. In both cases, private and public spaces and intermediate spaces were in clear hierarchy and also in harmony. Le Corbusier focused on the interplay of individual and collective life. This study analyzed the spatial composition of Le Corbusier's three multi-family housing models. They are Immeubles-Villas of Ville contemporaine pour 3 millions d'habitants (1922), Immeubles-Villas at Pavillion of l'Esprit Nouveau (1925), Unite d'habitation at Marseille (1945). The three projects are different according to size and periodical characteristics. However, they followed his basic principle for spatial composition about multy-family housing. His 'method of harmony for public and private space' is as follows: first, the securing of clear personal space; second, the importance of the intermediate space; Third, the essential understanding of communal space. Through this study, it was reaffirmed that the 'multi-family housing is a space where individuals and the whole co-exist'.

  • The purpose of this study is providing a usage of exterior, interior finish materials and color scheme for architectural design and the actual texture and pattern plans of finish materials from Le Corbuisier's work, Chapel Ronchamp. Chapel Ronchamp was analyzed to support the study for the interaction between texture usage and color expression. As a powerful design tool, texture, pattern and color of finish materials are very effective to alter the perception of the facade in the building. Most of architectural buildings, shapes and materials of elevations are monotonous and uniform. This study should be considered by details in the elevation of Chapel Ronchamp. As the part for developing and planning of architectural design, researching color plans and finish material is very important on real expression in the architectural space. As a result, this study will benefit in planning both the exterior and interior environments of color and finish material with texture and pattern.

  • Through the 20th century architectural theory of rational thinking and the principles according to the statement of the firm, Le Corbusier's early works by analyzing the language of architecture, including his architectural concepts and helps the understanding of modern architecture. Masters of modern architecture as a place among the works of Le Corbusier in the 1920s, 'Le Corbusier's White Period' homes to target by age, and that his initial concept of the formation process of clarifying, further the construction of his golden age will be the key to understand. I selected housings from Maison Citrohan to villa Savoye, the category of architectural elements by considering the development process, he examines developments of the concept of modern architectural space. In analysis process, First of all, I am focused on between each element in the development process to review and explicate the integration process. The advent of the machine which he lived, because of its incredible potential reorganization of human society, as well as to celebrate the start of a new lifestyle. His architectural language of the times in the machinism could achieve progress and modern art, which is a new interpretation of the natural world.
