  • Flow-induced vibration analyses have been conducted for a 3D compressor blade model. Advanced computational analysis system based on computational fluid dynamics(CFD) and computational structural dynamics has been developed in order to investigate detailed dynamic responses of designed compressor blades. A fully implicit time marching scheme based on the Newmark direct integration method is used for computing the coupled aeroelastic governing equations of the 3D compressor blade for fluid-structure interaction problems. Detailed dynamic responses and instantaneous pressure contours on the blade surfaces considering flow-separation effects are presented to show the multi-physical phenomenon of the rotating compressor blade.

  • This study presents the numerical investigation of the trajectory of rocket launched from a helicopter. The nonlinear mathematical model of armed configuration of UH-60 helicopter was developed while Hydra 70 unguided rocket was modeled to simulate the rocket behavior. The effects of various inflow models on the launched rocket trajectory are obtained. Similarly, rocket launch simulation was performed to determine the unsafe flight maneuver condition where the rocket trajectory is critically close to the helicopter main rotor tip path plane.

  • In repaired weldment of ASTM A-470 class 8 high pressure stream turbine rotor steel, creep rupture life was studied in relation with carbide morphology. Carbides were identified using carbide extraction replica method. A retired rotor has molybdenum rich carbide $M_2C$, lndacochea vanadium rich carbide $M_4C_3$, and chromium rich carbides $M_{23}C_6$and $M_7C_3$. Weldments ruptured at ICHAZ showed that some of carbides have been transformed into spherical types of coarsened carbides at ruptured area. Those carbides were revealed as molybdenum rich $M_6C$ carbide and they provided cavitation sites due to molybdenum depletion around $(M_6C)$ carbide. However coarsened $M_6C$ and $M_{23}C_6$ carbides were observed at ruptured area in case of ruptured at CGHAZ.

  • The use of a high gain flight control system to achieve high bandwidth performance increase the instability of a helicopter. To investigate these phenomena numerically, high fidelity EC155B1 helicopter model and simplified flight control system that include actuator, digital processor and noise rejection filter was developed. A study conducts an analytical investigation of roll axis stability of the helicopter model as feedback gain increases. And this study analyzes roll-rate and roll-attitude feedback gains limited by rotor flap mode. The results indicate that the phase delays caused by the filter can severely limit the usable values of the roll-rate and roll-attitude feedback gains.

  • In the present study, a wind tunnel test for a rotor-blade configuration was conducted to investigate a basic aerodynamic performance and a effect of the cross wind. The diameter of the configuration was 1.46 m and the test was carried out for both a clean and a tripped configurations. The boundary layer for the trip configuration was simulated by zig-zag tape and the test performed on constant-velocity and constant-rotational modes. It was shown that the test result for the tripped configuration reduces the maximum power coefficient by 9.4% ~ 12.1% compared to the clean one. Within $5^{\circ}$ of the flow angle, there is no significant loss of power, however, the coefficient is reduced by 5.3% ~ 36.7% in the range of $10^{\circ}{\sim}30^{\circ}$.

  • The desiccant rotor is the most essential component of desiccant cooling system, but one of its drawbacks to spread out is rotor size. To reduce the size of rotor the analysis of rotor performance is crucial. Systematic examination on the effect of desiccant and channel geometries has been conducted based on the numerical program previously developed. Considered parameters related to channel geometries are channel shape and cross section area of channel, and parameters related to desiccant are mass fraction, heat capacity, density, maximum water uptake and separation factor of isotherm. Considerable reduction of rotor size is expected by adjusting the parameters.

  • This study is to analyze the rotordynamic effect of surface-friction- factor characteristics on an annular seal. The honeycomb geometry which shows friction-factor-jump phenomena is used in this study. A rotordynamic analysis for a contered annular seal has been developed by incorporating empirical friction-factor model for honeycomb stator surfaces. The results of the analysis for the honeycomb seal showing the friction-factor jump is compared to the non- friction-factor-jump case. The results yield that the friction-factor-jump decreasesdirect stiffness and cross coupled stiffness coefficients, and increases damping coefficient to stabilize rotating machinery in a rotordynamic point of view. The analysis of the honeyeomb seal for the friction-factor-jump case shows reasonably good compared to experimental results, especially, for cross coupled and damping coeffcients.

  • A projected 100 kW APU gas turbine rotor-bearing system has a main outer shaft, which is composed of some numbers of segmented sections for manufacturing and assembly conveniences. For a secure assembly of the segmented sections a tie shaft or inner shaft is installed inside of the outer shaft and a tensional axial preload of 50,000 N is provided to it. In this paper it is intended to set-up a sound modeling method of the APU rotor system, and particularly, the influences of the tie shaft on the rotordynamic characteristics of the entire APU gas turbine rotor-bearing system are investigated. Analysis results show that as a conservative design practice the inner tie shaft should be actively modeled in the rotordynamic analysis of the APU rotor-bearing system, and its effects on the dynamic behaviors of the outer shaft should be thoroughly design-reviewed.

  • Part I of this study analyzed the effects of tilting pad bearing designs to reduce the stiffness of the bearings used in a process high-speed lightweight centrifugal compressor intended for a domestic refinery use. This was done in an attempt to enhance the robustness of its rotordynamic stability against possible aerodynamic cross-coupled stiffness. The bearing design variables reviewed were the clearances, LBPs, LOPs, and preloads. The results showed that there was practically no difference between the LBP and LOP designs in terms of the bearing stiffness, because the compressor rotor was lightweight and the bearings had relatively high preloads. Increasing both the machined and assembled clearances in bearing designs has resulted in the bearing stiffness being greatly reduced. In addition, it has been confirmed that an additional reduction in the bearing stiffness can be obtained for given fixed machined clearances by decreasing the preloads, i.e., by increasing the assembled clearances.
