Development of Diagnosis Application for Rail Surface Damage using Image Analysis Techniques (이미지 분석기법을 이용한 레일표면손상 진단애플리케이션 개발)

  • The recently enacted detailed guidelines on the performance evaluation of track facilities presented the necessary requirements regarding the evaluation procedures and implementation methods of track performance evaluation. However, the grade of rail surface damage is determined by external inspection (visual inspection), and there is no choice but to rely only on qualitative evaluation based on the subjective judgment of the inspector. Therefore, in this study, we attempted to develop a diagnostic application that can diagnose rail internal defects using rail surface damage. In the field investigation, rail surface damage was investigated and patterns were analyzed. Additionally, in the indoor test, SEM testing was used to construct image data of rail internal damage, and crack length, depth, and angle were quantified. In this study, a deep learning model (Fast R-CNN) using image data constructed from field surveys and indoor tests was applied to the application. A rail surface damage diagnosis application (App) using a deep learning model that can be used on smart devices was developed. We developed a smart diagnosis system for rail surface damage that can be used in future track diagnosis and performance evaluation work.

  • In this study, rail surface defects are increasing due to the aging of urban railway rails, but in the detailed guidelines for track performance evaluation established by the country, rail surface damage is inspected with the naked eye of engineers and simple measuring tools. With the recent enactment of the Track Diagnosis Act, a large budget has been invested and the volume of rail diagnosis is rapidly increasing, but it is difficult to secure the reliability of diagnosis results using labor-intensive visual inspection techniques. It is very important to discover defects in the rail surface through periodic track tours and visual inspection. However, evaluating the severity of defects on the rail surface based on the subjective judgment of the inspector has significant limitations in predicting damage inside the rail. In this study, the rail internal crack characteristics due to rail surface damage were studied. In field measurements, rail surface damage locations were selected, samples of various damage types were collected, and the rail surface damage status was evaluated. In indoor testing, we intend to analyze the correlation between rail surface defects and internal defects using a electron scanning microscope (SEM). To determine the crack growth rate of urban railway rails currently in use, the Gaussian probability density function was applied and analyzed.

  • 구름접촉피로는 차륜과 레일의 반복적인 접촉으로 인하여 발생하는 표면손상현상으로 점차 증가하는 레일손상 중 하나이다. 접촉마모 및 주기적 그라인딩보다 균열의 성장속도가 더 빨라 균열진전이 시작되는 최소균열크기(minimum crack size for growth)는 레일의 파괴방지 및 유효한 유지보수전략을 수립하는데 기초자료로 활용된다. 본 연구에서는 최소균열크기를 예측하기 위하여 차륜레일의 접촉에 영향을 미치는 주요 파라미터를 변화시키면서 최소균열크기의 변화를 살펴보았다. 이를 위하여 Fletcher와 Kapoor의 "2.5D"모델을 적용한 시뮬레이션 소프트웨어를 개발하였으며, 최대접촉하중(1174MPa), 표면마찰계수(0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4), 잔류응력, 접촉에 의한 표면마모(1.0nm/cycle), 그라인딩량(0.3mm/10MGT)을 파라미터로 하여 해석을 수행하였다. 해석결과 최소균열크기는 해석조건에 따라 1.41-1.95mm로 계산되었다.

Deep Learning-based Rail Surface Damage Evaluation (딥러닝 기반의 레일표면손상 평가)

  • Since rolling contact fatigue cracks can always occur on the rail surface, which is the contact surface between wheels and rails, railway rails require thorough inspection and diagnosis to thoroughly inspect the condition of the cracks and prevent breakage. Recent detailed guidelines on the performance evaluation of track facilities present the requirements for methods and procedures for track performance evaluation. However, diagnosing and grading rail surface damage mainly relies on external inspection (visual inspection), which inevitably relies on qualitative evaluation based on the subjective judgment of the inspector. Therefore, in this study, we conducted a deep learning model study for rail surface defect detection using Fast R-CNN. After building a dataset of rail surface defect images, the model was tested. The performance evaluation results of the deep learning model showed that mAP was 94.9%. Because Fast R-CNN has a high crack detection effect, it is believed that using this model can efficiently identify rail surface defects.

Experimental Study for Establishing Rail Grinding Period in the Urban Railway (도시철도 레일연마주기 산정을 위한 시험적 연구)

  • The defects of rail head induced by fatigue and deterioration are mainly classified by two types ; one occurred on the surface of rail head the another occurred on the inner rail head. This study performed the surface irregularity measurement of rail head according to the passing tonnage in the urban railway. Also, we carried out microscopic structure test, chemical component test and micro-hardness test for the specimen which is the used rail on metro line by accumulated passing tonnage. As a result of this study, for new rail, it should be performed initial grinding in order to remove 0.3mm of de-carbonized layer. The preventive-cyclic grinding for preventing RCF defects is proposed two options : grinding by the whole line and grinding by specified sections.

  • Rails are subjected to damage from rolling contact fatigue, which leads to defects such as cracks. Rolling contact fatigue damages on the surface of rail such as head check, squats are one of growing problems. Another form of rail surface damage, known as "Ballast imprint" has become apparent. This form of damage is associated with ballast particles becoming trapped between the wheel and the surface of rail. These defects are still one of the key reasons for rail maintenance and replacement. In this study, we have investigated whether the ballast imprint is an initiator of head check type cracks and effect of defect size using Finite element analysis. The FE analysis were used to investigate stresses and strains in subsurface of defects according to variation of defect size. Based on loading cycles obtained from FE analysis, fatigue analysis for each point was carried out.

Prediction of Surface Crack Growth Considering the Wheel Load Increment Due to Rail Defect (레일손상에 의한 윤중증가를 고려한 표면균열 성장예측)

  • Prediction of a minimum crack size for growth, which is defined as a crack size that grows fast enough to keep ahead of its removal by contact wear and periodic grinding, is the most demanding work to prevent rail from fatigue failure and develop cost effective railway maintenance strategy In this study, we investigated the wheel load increment due to a rail defect during a train ran over it, and its effect on the minimum crack size for growth. For this purpose, we developed simulation software based on the Fletcher and Kapoor's "2.5D" model and measured wheel load increment during a train passed over a defect. A maximum contact pressure and contact patch size were calculated by 3D FEM and crack growth analyses were performed by varying two of dominant contact contributors; surface friction coefficient(0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4) and crack aspect ratio. The minimum crack sizes for growth were calculated from 0.29 to 1.44mm depending on the contact conditions. They were decreasing with increasing surface friction coefficient and decreasing with crack aspect ratio(a/b).

Investigations on Corrosion Environment of Buried Water Pipelines in Seoul Area (서울지역 매설 상수배관 부식환경 조사)

  • 서울 및 서울 인근 주민들의 식수 공급을 위하여 1978년에 건설된 매설 상수배관은 전기방식 조처없이 콜탈에나벨만으로 피복된채 지하철 및 각종 전기설비가 복잡하게 산재된 서울지역에서 근 20년 유지되고 있다. 따라서 이 배관에 대한 부식 상태를 파악하는 것이 배관의 안전성 확보 및 대책수립, 배관수명의 연장, 중단없는 상수공급 동의 차원에서 매우 중요하다. 이 조사의 목적은 건설후 20년이 경과하여 노후된 매설 상수배관에 대한 기본적인 부식환경 및 피복 상태를 조사하여, 부식상태를 진단하고 향후 대책을 세우기 위한 기초 자료를 확보하는 것이다. 조사의 대상은 1978년에 건설된 서울지역 매설 상수배관 103 Km이었으며, 주요 조사 내용은 토양의 pH, 토양비저항과 같은 기초적인 부식환경조사, 전 배관에 대한 부식전위측정, 부식환경 조사로부터 판정된 부식 우려구간을 대상으로 피복손상부 탐측 및 시험굴착, 그리고 상기 조사의 결과를 검토하는 것이다. 조사 결과, 기본적인 부식환경 변수로 예상되던 토양의 전기비저항, 습도, pH는 부 식전위 및 토양종류와 상관관계를 보이지 않았으며, 상수배관 주변의 토양비저항은 대부분 8,000 ~ 10,000 ${\Omega}{\cdot}cm$, 토양 pH는 대부분 5와 6사이에 집중되었다. 전체적으로 볼 때 매설 상수배관은 예상보다 양호한 배관 상태를 유지하고 있다고 판단되나, 일부 간섭구간은 방식보완이 필요한 것으로 조사되었다. 즉 일부 간섭에 의한 미방식 지역은 배류기나 희생양극 설치와 같은 조속한 방식보완 조치가 필요하며, 과방식이 우려되는 곳은 강제배류기의 출력을 크게 낮추는 것이 필요하다. 이때 부식전위가 크게 올라가는 지점이 있으면 부근 가까운 지하철 레일과 선택배류기로 연결하는 것이 바람직하다.
