  • Previous studies demonstrated that laser ablation under transparent liquid can result in ablation enhacement and particle removal from the surface. In this work, the liquid-assisted excimer laser ablation process is examined fer polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), Si, and alumina with emphasis on ablation enhacement, surface topography, and debris formation. In the case of PET and PMMA, the effect of liquid is analyzed both fer thin water film and bulk water. As the ablation enhanement by liquid is already known for Si and alumina, the analysis focuses on surface topography and debris formation resulting from the liquid-assisted laser ablation process. The results show that application of liquid increases the ablation rate of PMMA while that of PET remains unchanged even in the liquid-assisted process. It is also revealed that the liquid can significantly improve the surface quality by reducing the debris deposition. However, the surface roughness is generally deteriorated in the liquid-assisted process. The surface toporaphy is found to be strongly dependent on the method of liquid application, i.e., thin film or bulk liquid.

  • In the last few years, lasers have found new applications in production engineering as tools for surface treatment, cutting, welding, drilling and marking. So far, the laser has mainly been used in special laser processing machines ('laser-only') directly integrated into a production line or serving as stand-alone stations in the workshop. By combining conventional metal cutting technologies with laser processes in one machine, complete processing of a workpiece with different technologies in one setting can be realized. The main advantages are a reduction of the material flow between the production machines, which leads to a reduction in processing time and logistics, and an enhancement of manufacturing quality due to the processing in one setting. In addition to this approach new processing technologies such as laser-assisted machining are possible.

  • Laser Assisted Machining (LAM) was often used in process of difficulty-to-cut materials. In previous study, Laser assisted machining was a straight path processing using 1-axis manipulator in laser module. But 1-axis manipulator in laser module was able to process only straight path. So, in this study, laser module in laser assisted machining equipped to 2-axis manipulator. 2-axis manipulator has two motors. First motor is machining direction motor and second motor is Vertical Motor. Machining direction motor rotates in the direction of machining and vertical motor rotates vertical direction in the direction of machining. Machining path of laser assisted machining was considered diagonal path and curved path of laser heat source. This study calculated the 2-axis manipulator's rotation angle in diagonal path and curved path.

  • Silicon Nitride ($Si_3N_4$), which is widely used in a variety of applications, is hard-to-machine due to its high hardness. At high temperature (e.g. above $1000^{\circ}C$), however, the machinability can be greatly improved. In this work, we used a $CO_2$ laser with a high absorptivity to $Si_3N_4$ of 0.9 to preheat the surface of a rothting $Si_3N_4$ rod. Preheating and turning of $Si_3N_4$ was executed at the same time. The result of machining was MRR of $8.0mm^3/s$ that is four times faster than normal grinding. Continuous chip formation was observed by a microscope.

  • An experimental study was carried out to observe the characteristics of impingement of assist gas from a rectangular supersonic nozzle on kerf surface in laser machining. A micro-scale supersonic (Mach number 2.0) rectangular nozzle system was designed and fabricated for the purposes, and hot tests of the performance of the nozzle system was proceeded in the ITI corporation laboratory. For various related parameters such as laser powers, nozzle pressures and cutting speeds, the quality of the frontal view of cut edge surfaces was observed by a microscope. In the study, it was shown that the application of the present micro-rectangular supersonic nozzle in an off-axis configuration made it possible to cut a mild steel, by combinations of relatively low laser - powers, large standoff distances, and assist gas with no oxygen, which was not achieved by conventional laser cutting processes.

  • Laser-assisted machining uses primarily laser power to heat the local area before the material is removed. It not only efficiently reduces the cutting force during the manufacturing process but also improves the machining characteristics and accuracy with regard to difficult-to-machine materials. The prediction of relative deformations between the cutting tool and workpiece is important to improve the accuracy of machined components. This paper presents the deformation errors caused for a cylindrical workpiece by thermal effects in the laser-assisted machine tool using finite element method. The results can be used to increase the cutting accuracy by compensating thermal distortion prior to laser-assisted machining.

  • Laser-assisted machining is dependent on absorbed energy density into workpiece. Generally, the absorptivity of laser beam is dependent on wave length of laser, materials, surface roughness, etc. Various shapes and energy densities for beam irradiation can be used to laser-assisted machining. In this thesis, efficient method of heat source modeling was developed and designed by using one fundamental experimental trials. And then, laser-assisted machining of rod-shaped cast iron was simulated by using commercial FEM code MARC. Simulations and experiments with various conditions were carried out to determine suitable condition of pre-heating for laser-assisted turning process. Temperature distribution of cutting zone could be predicted by simulation.

  • To machine the micro hole, laser machining system is widely used, however, the system cannot fabricate the micro hole with high aspect ratio and good surface finish. To break the obstacles, the high frequency vibration mechanism with PZT (Piezoelectric Transducers) is proposed in this paper. The mechanism will vibrate the laser beam in vertical direction so that the aspect ratio and surface finish may be higher than the conventional. The mechanism vibrates the eyepiece of laser optics. In addition to the benefits, the mechanism enables us to have high precision and flexibility. It decreases burr and debris during machining. And it is able to machine various materials of workpiece. This research include high frequency and large travel range of the proposed mechanism. The PZT motion of mechanism and analysis on the sensitivity of design parameters are extracted from a finite element method (FEM) simulation. In the analysis, the target vibration mode without parasitic motion is designated to have the target frequency and high amplitude.
