  • In this paper, a method for classifying fingerprint ridge lines using runlength codes is proposed. To detect feature points(minutiae) in automatic fingerprint identification system(AFIS), classification of fingerprint ridge lines are essential process. The fingerprint ridge lines are classified by run-length coding, and also the end and bifurcation regions in ridge lines are separated. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, detected feature regions including minutiae points and classified fingerprint ridge lines are shown.

  • In this paper, we proposed an effective method for detecting fingerprint ridge direction based on the run-length and chain codes. First, a fingerprint image is normalized, and it is thresholded to obtain binary image with foreground and background regions. The foreground regions is composed of fingerprint ridges, and the ridges is encoded with the run-length and chain codes. To detect directional information, the boundary of ridge codes is traced, and curvature is calculated at ecah point of boundary. And the detected direction value is smoothed with appropriate window locally. The proposed method is applied to NIST and FVC2002 fingerprint database to evaluate performance. By the experimental results, the proposed method can be used to obtain ridge direction value in fingerprint image.

  • In this paper, an effective digital watermarking method for copyright protection of binary image data is proposed. First, a binary image is grouped into feature regions which have geometrical features and general one. The watermark for authentication is embedded in general regions in order to preserve geometrical features regions. We have used run-length code and special runs for grouping feature regions and general one. For invisibility of watermark, we have embedded the watermark considering transition sensitivity of each pixel in general regions. The proposed method is applied to some binary image such as character, signature, seal, and fingerprint image to evaluate performance. By the experimental results, the proposed method preserve feature regions of original image and have higher invisibility of watermarks.

  • This paper presents a new test data compression and low power scan test method that can reduce test time and power consumption. A proposed method can reduce the scan-in power and test data volume using a modified scan cell reordering algorithm and hybrid adaptive encoding method. Hybrid test data compression method uses adaptively the Golomb codes and run-length codes according to length of runs in test data, which can reduce efficiently the test data volume compare to previous method. We apply a scan cell reordering technique to minimize the column hamming distance in scan vectors, which can reduce the scan-in power consumption and test data. Experimental results for ISCAS 89 benchmark circuits show that reduced test data and low power scan testing can be achieved in all cases. The proposed method showed an about a 17%-26% better compression ratio, 8%-22% better average power consumption and 13%-60% better peak power consumption than that of previous method.

  • In this paper, the RUNCODE encoder hardware IP was designed and implemented for symbol ID code length encoding, which is one of major modules of JBIG2 encoder for FAX. ImpulseC Codeveloper and Xilinx ISE/EDK program are used for the hardware generation and synthesis of VHDL code. The synthesized hardware was downloaded to Virtex-4 FX60 FPGA on ML410 development board. The synthesized hardware utilizes 13% of total slice of FPGA. Using Active-HDL tool, the hardware was verified showing normal operation. Compared with the software operating using Microblaze cpu on ML410 board, the synthesized hardware was better in operation time. The improvement ratio of operation time between the synthesized hardware and software showed about 40 times faster than software only operation. The synthesized H/W and S/W module cooperated to succeed in compressing the CCITT standard document.

  • This paper presents the design of a JPEG-LS codec for lossless image compression from AR/VR device. The proposed JPEG-LS(: LosSless) codec is mainly composed of a context modeling block, a context update block, a pixel prediction block, a prediction error coding block, a data packetizer block, and a memory block. All operations are organized in a fully pipelined architecture for real time image processing and the LOCO-I compression algorithm using improved 2D approach to compliant with the SBT coding. Compared with a similar study in JPEG-LS, the Block-RAM size of proposed STB-FLC architecture is reduced to 1/3 compact and the parallel design of the predication block could improved the processing speed.

  • Abstract Perspective views provide a powerful depth cue and thus aid the interpretation of complicated images. The main drawback of current perspective volume rendering is the long execution time. In this paper, we present an efficient perspective volume rendering algorithm based on coherency between rays. Two sets of templates are built for the rays cast from horizontal and vertical scanlines in the intermediate image which is parallel to one of volume faces. Each sample along a ray is calculated by interpolating neighboring voxels with the pre-computed weights in the templates. We also solve the problem of uneven sampling rate due to perspective ray divergence by building more templates for the regions far away from a viewpoint. Since our algorithm operates in object-order, it can avoid redundant access to each voxel and exploit spatial data coherency by using run-length encoded volume. Experimental results show that the use of templates and the object-order processing with run-length encoded volume provide speedups, compared to the other approaches. Additionally, the image quality of our algorithm improves by solving uneven sampling rate due to perspective ray di vergence.
