  • Tunnel lining is the final support of a tunnel and reflects the results of the interaction between ground and support system. Recently it is very difficult to support and manage the tunnel because the cracks on tunnel lining cause many problems in supporting and managing tunnels. Therefore the analysis of the cracks is quite strongly required. In this study, mechanical behaviour of a tunnel lining was examined by model tests and by numerical analyses. Especially the model test was examined for double linings including shotcrete and concrete lining. The model tests were carried out under various conditions taking different loading shapes, horizontal stresses, thicknesses of linings and double lining, vault opening behind the concrete lining and rock-like medium surrounding the lining. Due to horizontal stress, compressive stress prevailed on the lining. Thus the bearing capacity of the lining increased. The existence of a vault opening behind the concrete lining reduced the bearing capacity by the similar amount of reduction of concrete lining thickness. Rock-like medium cast around the side wall of the lining restrained the deflection of the lining, and the bearing capacity for cracking and failure increased vary much. In numerical analyses a algorithm which can analysis the double lining by introduction of interface element was developed. And the results of the numerical analyses were compared with the results of the model tests.

  • In this study, lining thickness distribution and its behind state (particularly, its void state) were analyzed using the GPR survey data performed on three currently operating NATM tunnels. Results of GPR analysis showed that void areas were mostly detected between concrete lining and primary support, particularly, near the crown of the tunnels. The lining thickness in the left-hand side of the tunnel was different from that of the right-hand side by 8.6~253.5 mm when measured in transverse direction. It was also found that longitudinal cracks were prevailed in the area lining thickness was sharply changed. Longitudinal thickness distribution at the crown was also studied and tested by performing 3 goodness-of-fit tests in order to find the most suitable thickness distribution. Normal distribution (or similar distribution) fit most suitably to the measured data if the measured average thickness was larger than designed one; Gamma and/or Inverse Gauss distribution fit to the measured data reasonably well if the measured average thickness was less than the designed value of thickness. Since actual lining thickness can be a potential index when assessing the state and safety of the unreinforced NATM tunnel lining, measuring of the lining thickness with GPR survey might be needed rather than assuming the thickness is always constant and same with the designed value.

  • In the long-term, most tunnels suffer from the increase in ground water inflow and in pore water pressure on the lining. To reduce such hydraulic effect, generally grouting methods are adopted. In this paper effective grouting design is proposed based on numerical simulation. To investigate the optimal grouting layout, factors such as relative permeability, grouting thickness, and distance from the lining are considered. The results are analysed in terms of pore water pressure, inflow rate, and earth pressure. It is revealed that the pore water pressure has increased with a decrease in grout permeability, an increase in grouting thickness and an increase in grouting distance. Meanwhile the inflow rate has decreased with a decrease in grout permeability and is inversely proportional to grouting thickness. Effective grouting design guideline are proposed based on this study.

  • To design segment lining, loads such as self weight, vertical load, horizontal load, ground reaction, water pressure, backfill grouting pressure et al. have to be considered. Earth pressure and water pressure are the major factor to design segment lining such as concrete strength, segment thickness and amount of rebar et al. To analysis earth pressure and water pressure acting on segment lining, filed monitoring and back analysis are performed in this study.

  • The problematic issue of cracking, water shedding in tunnel is recently coming out in the view of the structural stability. Hence, the assessment is required for the existing tunnels to achieve the structural soundness of tunnels, and their safety and maintenance. In this study, fracture behaviour and displacement of a tunnel concrete lining using steel fiber reinforcement concrete was investigated. The specimens were fabricated in single lining for a model of real road tunnel. As parameters, load condition, thickness of lining, whether or not rear cavity in crown, and a ratio of steel fiber in concrete were taken. From these factors, the load for crack and fracture, displacement, and the pattern of crack were looked into for the structural stability of a tunnel concrete lining.

  • A concrete lining of NATM tunnel had been considered as interior materials. But recently we consider it as structural materials. Therefore we must consider various loads. Relaxed rock load is a main load which decides thickness and reinforcement presence of concrete lining. In practice conservatively, Terzaghi's rock load theory has been accepted to estimate relaxed rock loads in urban subway tunnel design. This study investigates the equations of relaxed rock loads used in the design of NATM concrete lining. Structural analysis are executed based on various equations of relaxed rock loads, and concrete lining forces are compared.

  • When a tunnel is constructed by drilling and blasting operation, the excavated perimeter becomes uneven due to overbreak at the drill holes so that the thickness of shotcrete tends to be irregular. In this case, the conventional stress analyses for tunnel lining of a uniform thickness cannot be readily applicable. In this study, the profile of tunnel perimeter assumed to be sinusoidal in order to simulate the uneven tunnel perimeter and to control the thickness of shotcrete by using the amplitude and wavelength. By adopting the sinusoidal function to a theoretical solution of stress analysis for uniform lining, the range of axial stress of irregular shotcrete can be estimated. The applicability of the approximate solution has been verified by performing a series of numerical analyses for various conditions. It is shown that the axial stress of shorcrete is highly dependent upon the irregularity of shotcrete, together with the ground property and initial stress conditions. It is also shown the shear stress is dependent upon the wavelength, and the stress condition becomes unfavorable where the thickness of shotcrete is relatively small. The approach developed in this study shows that the stress state where the thickness is relatively small is unfavourable, and it is necessary to take complementary measures when installing shotcrete after blasting.

  • The concrete lining of a tunnel constructed by NATM used to be regarded as facing material which does not support any load from the surrounding ground. But the recent appraisal of the decrepit tunnels revealed that rockbolts and shotcrete deteriorate with time resulting in loss of supporting capability. Consequently, concrete lining has to support part of the load which used to be supported by rockbolts and shotcrete, and thus should be regarded as the final supporting structure in a tunnel. One of the common, and perhaps the most serious problem in concrete lining is the longitudinal cracks taking place at the tunnel crown. The longitudinal cracks, mostly related to the construction procedures, can be developed by many reasons such as the lack of thickness, wrong materials, bad curing environment, and excessive external forces. Many efforts has been made to control and suppress these cracks but efficient and economic way is yet to be found. For efficient crack control in concrete lining, reinforcement by composite fibers, which is the mixture of steel fiber and nylon fiber, is suggested in this study.

  • Related to the previous paper on the typical crack pattern of tunnel lining with NATM, the characteristic defects in reinforced cement concrete lining of NATM tunnel have analyzed with the precise inspection with safety and diagnosis (PISD) by KISTEC. Depending on the reinforcing materials, steel rebar, steel fiber, and glass fiber have been implemented to reinforcing lining in various NATM tunnel constructions. Reinforcing lining with rebar are prevailed on NATM tunnel to countermeasure the weak geological circumstances, to pursuit the economical tunnel sections, and to resist the risk of tunnel deterioration. By the special act on the safety control of public facilities, the reinforced NATM tunnels for more than 1 km length are scrutinized closely to characterize defects; crack, reinforcement exposure, and lack of lining. Crack resistance by reinforcing is shown in comparison with the normalized crack to the length of tunnel. Typical exposed reinforcements in lining have exemplified with various sections. The lack of lining due to the mal-construction, spalling, fire, earthquake and leaching has been analyzed. The cause and mechanism with the field inspections and other studies has also been verified. Detailed cases are selected by the above concerns as well as the basic information from FMS (Facilities Management System). Likewise the previous paper, this study provides specialized defects in reinforced lining of NATM and it can be widely used in spreading the essential technics and reporting skills. Furthermore, it would be advised and amended for the detail guideline of Safety Diagnosis and PISD (tunnel).
