The purpose of this study was to investigate the gender differences of peer relationship and to analyze the effects of the individual psychology and family variables on adolescents' peer relationships. The subject of this study were 1,444 students of second and third grade of middle school who reside in Seoul and 1,397 self reported questionnaires were used for final analysis. The major results of this study were as follows. First, the findings suggested that there were significant differences between female and male adolescents in peer relationships. Female adolescents' friendship quality was higher than male adolescents', and male adolescents' peer victimization was higher than female adolescents'. Second, higher self-esteem, positive parenting behavior, higher level of parental supervision and lower level of interparental conflict predicted higher level of friendship quality among male and female adolescents. Higher depression, lower self-esteem, positive parenting behavior, lower level of parental supervision and higher level of interparental conflict predicted higher peer victimization among male and female adolescents.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the most rational method of grouping peers to understand the impact of peer relationship on individual development of elementary school students. For the study, students at a class of the 3rd year(male) and a class of the 4th(female) year at elementary schools in Busan and Ulsan were surveyed to see the differences between various methods of classification of peer relation subgroup on the basis of cooccurence of perception data and psychological preference data. Two questionnaires were used; a questionnaire of perception and a questionnaire of psychological preference. With the perception data, value of sharing relationship was applied to classify peer relation subgroup and with the psychological preference data, interest relationship was expanded to classify peer relation subgroup of more than third party relationship. The result of this study showed that in the case of girls, there was high congruency between the classifications of peer relation subgroup by perception data and by preference data, whereas in the case of boys, there was difference between the classifications of peer relation subgroup by perception data and by preference data, which implies that boys can form a peer group even if there is psychological difference among members but girls can form a peer group only when there is psychological preference among them. Such a result shows that there is difference between boys and girls in the process of forming peer relationship. It is suggested that comparison of fitness be made between classification of peer relation subgroup by a homeroom teacher, by perception data and by psychological preference for rational classification of peer relationship among male children.
This study examined the potential mediating mechanisms underlying the association between peer victimization and school adjustment. 521 children in the fifth and sixth grades were recruited from primary schools in Korea. Peer nomination and self-reports were used to measure peer victimization, cognitive representations, and school avoidance. Academic achievement records were obtained from official school records. The findings indicated that peer victimization contributed to school avoidance and academic achievement by different pathways. The association between peer victimization and school avoidance was indirectly mediated by perceptions of the self and peers. In contrast, peer victimization was directly associated with academic achievement.
The purpose of this study was to examine the role of self-esteem (SE) and cooperation (CO) in the effect of parental attitudes (PA) as perceived by children on the quality of peer relationships (PR). To this end, the data of 1299 boys and 1278 girls in 4th grade were analyzed using the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey data. The correlation analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, structural equation modeling using phantom variables and bootstrapping were performed by using SPSS and AMOS programs. The results of this study are as follows. First, perceived PA had a significant effect on SE, CO, and PR, SE had a significant effect on CO and PR, and CO had a significant effect on PR. Second, the serial multi-mediating model that assumed that SE and CO mediate the relationship between PA and PR was found to be appropriate. These results suggest that it is important to consider the child's self-esteem and cooperation with parenting attitudes to improve the child's peer relationship. Future research and clinical implications were discussed.
This study was done to explore the correlation among internet game addiction, family functioning, offense experience, victimization experience, possibility of peer violence and to identify factors related the possibility of peer violence. Participants were 789 elementary school students with survey. SPSS/WIN(20.0 version) were used to analyze the collected data. Internet game addiction was negatively correlated family functioning and was positively correlated the offense experience, victimization experience, possibility of peer violence. Multiple regression analysis showed the factors as offense experience of peer violence and relationship with teacher significantly accounted for 63.1% of the possibility of peer violence. In conclusion, it is need to health education for prevention of internet game addiction and breaking offense experience. The activating relationship with teachers are alternative plan that prevent to possibility of peer violence.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the family and peer environments on adolescents' depression. The subject of this study were 667 second graders of middle school from Bucheon, Geonggi-Do and 633 self reported questionnaires were used for final analysis. The major results of this study were as follows: First, the findings suggested that there 'was difference between male and female adolescents in depression. Second, male and female adolescents' depression were associated with peer victimization, relationship with parents, interparental conflict. Adolescents who had high peer victimization, less close relationship with parents and high level of interparental conflict showed high depression.
The objective of this study was to investigate the sibling relationship, the attachment to parent and peer according to children's gender, birth order, and sibling gender composition. For this purpose, 697 male and female elementary students answered the questionnaire, who were selected because they had only one sibling. The date were analysed by t-test and partial correlation. The major finding of this study showed that children who had same sex of sibling perceived more positive way to their younger sibling then children who had different sex of sibling and that children who had female sibling perceived more positive way to sibling relationship, attachment to parent and their peers than children who had male sibling.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the home environment of young children on their language and the quality of peer competence. The current study hypothesized that when the home environment of young children is desirable, the young children would be more likely to develop better language skills, which in turn, predict greater peer competence and lower levels of aggression and withdrawal in the interaction with peers at child care settings. The study used data of 1,802 families who have been participating in the Korean Child Panel Study since 2008. The results revealed that there was a significant relation from both positive home environment and better language skills to more positive play interaction and reduced play disruption and play disconnection. Home environment significantly predicted better expressive language development of young children and, in turn, higher scores on expressive vocabulary tests predicted greater peer competence and less negative play behaviors rated by child care providers. Statistical tests proved that the mediational effects of language skills between home environment and toddler's peer relationships were statistically significant. The study results emphasized the importance of language development in children's expanding social settings and the supporting role of rich and stimulus home environments in children's development.
This study aims to investigate peer socialization processes on early adolescents' prosocial behaviors in friendship networks. A longitudinal social network model (SIENA) was used to disentangle socialization process in prosocial behavior. Participants were fourth and fifth graders in South Korea from 39 elementary school classrooms (N=1,040, 48% girls). According to results, students select friends based on similarity in prosocial behavior (peer selection) was found in both prosocial behaviors. Peer influence effects were also observed in prosocial behaviors. Also, moderating effect of social relatedness was significant. In classes with high social relatedness, influence effect of prosocial behavior was significant. As a contrast, prosocial behavior was not socialized in classes with the low social relatedness. Results suggest that peernetwork play a critical role in the co-evolution of friendships, and prosocial behaviors. Findings yielded the importance of the socialization process and promoting healthy peer socialization environment.
